Good Saturday gang! Ye old weather dude is back safe and sound in the bluegrass state after the big New York trip. As you can imagine… I am a bit on the tired side so I will keep this update on the brief side. We will get back to normal with updates starting later this afternoon.
As I have mentioned… I have not been able to give the weather my full attention for a few days now, so you get my “first blush” thoughts on the overall pattern. Let’s do it in headline style…
1. Temps for the month of December are running about 5 degrees below normal to date. This is impressive and , with the coldest yet to come, we have an increasing shot at one of the coldest December’s on record!!
2. Thermometers will moderate closer to normal this weekend with highs reaching the low and mid 40s. A system to our south and east will bring a chilly rain to the region. This could start out as a mix early tonight before going over to all rain.
3. A very strong front will blast through here Tuesday with rapidly falling temps. Showers will be out ahead of this front with a few snow showers and flurries behind it. Wednesday into Thursday will see the coldest temps of next week! Brrrr
4. The end of next week into next weekend may see our first clipper of the year! Something to watch as the pattern favors it.
5. The Arctic Oscillation is officially off the charts negative! It is at one of the most negative phases as I have ever seen and it says one thing… LOOK OUT BELOW!!!! The pattern can go to the extreme for the last two weeks of December and this should lead to some big time cold with several snow threats! All of this happens just in time for the holidays! ![]()
6. There are 2 things you never talk about with people… politics and religion. The blog adds global warming to this issue as it has become nothing but a political tool by both sides of the argument. Let’s keep the blog about weather or the Cats or everyday life! ![]()
I will get things back to normal later today so check back. Have a great Saturday and take care.

Glad you made it back. Now let’s get that little team to the north and go 10-0. As for politics and religion you are so CORRECT! Can lose friendships in a heartbeat when talking those two and that is why I try not to do it. Bring on the snow it would be nice to actually have a white Christmas in Kentucky. I would go to NY for the big lake effect event but I’m sure it would only dry up if I did.
So just why was WAA not an issue “back in the day?”
We certainly have our fair share of bitterly COLD but BUBBA seems to be correct; we have no shortage of BITTERLY cold, but only when it’s DRY! This is so strange….What kept this from happening “back in the day”?
I mean, we have COLD but snowless winters, except those 2 events late Jan/early Feb 2009 (ice storm + 4 inches snow on top of that)
Kudos to the NWS for nailing the temps in my are this morning i seen some TV stations was giving mid 20s and here i sit with 16 degrees 1 off of what the NWS forecasted
what i would give for tonight mix to chilly rain. to stay snow. in other news all of these snow chances everyone is talking about haven’t happened someone will have to prove something before i believe! lol
Welcome BACK! Chris.. glad you are safe and sound back in BIG BLUE country!! I was looking for ya on ESPN, thought for sure I seen ya for a split second.. or was that Micheal Douglas!! lol 😉
GOOO BIG BLUE!!!
I’m sure we all been psyched over BIG BLUE since the early 90s, now if we can get the weather to change like the 90s, we be back in business.. BIG BLUE and SNOW domination, what a combination!!!
Interesting that the GFS wants to give us a huge gift for Christmas week with a major nor’easter, There you seen it and now you don’t kind of thing going on! Anybody else notices that? lol
hopefully we can get a clipper to track to our south at some point that would put us in a good spot for some decent totals
Cats go 10-0 after today! The Bengals take down the Vikings on Sunday! I could get used to these type of winters really fast:)
The shooting you talked about CB in New York was a national story.
Hey CB…
What’s your thoughts on Global Warming..?
Who did you vote for, for President..?
Is God real..??
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…!!!!!!
I’m just messin’ with ya’ buddy… Hope you and Wynter enjoyed your trip to “the Big Apple”….
…
Glad you had a safe and happy trip, CB. I loved the pic of the Christmas tree, it was beautiful.
Snow or no snow, rich or poor (mostly poor)seems like all I need to do to make me happy is look at my beautiful granddaughter, now 2 1/2.
Did I tell you I am going to have a grandson in May?
ITS ABOUT TIME YOU GOT HOME!!…lol..welcome back C.B. a very cold morning down here in southern ky.. as Andy has already mentioned 16* COLD FROZEN degrees this morning…
well here is another exciting episode of ” AS THE MODELS TURN ” brought to you today by the snow mizer, and his brother the heat mizer, with all your weather needs see these boys anyday of the week, just call 1800-000-0000…LOL…
now for days episode, the 6z gfs says this for the Christmas storm…

CONGRATULATIONS RhondaB!!!!! I want some grandbabies, but I can’t even get my boys married off. I need to introduce them to some sweet KY girls, get em away from those Buckeye gals!! LOL Oh yea, its bright sunshine and 26, low of 17 this AM.:)
the gfs’s storybook christmas continues on the 12z run. The euro weeklies agree that christmas into the new year may be a cold and stormy stretch. the question is does it mean a snowstorm to our south, days of biter cold followed by waa and rain or no phasing between the jets take your pick all of them have kept the snow away so far, the dome is trying to come back with the center in Bowling Green, KY.
You’re so right RhondaB those little sometimes is what keeps us waking up every morning. My niece just gave us another little girl to add to the family last night. Another baby to spoil YEAH!
CB…I’m so glad you added the cats to the list of permitted subjects! Because I don’t think there’d be a weather blog since we can’t keep out mouth shut about that subject!! LOL!
It’s a bright shiny day out there! Everyone enjoy your day!
We will probably need to count on the clipper, because that may be about it in December.
Best bet is a 2″ clipper event. The remaining of December will likely be cold air settling in with little moisture joining in.
We can talk could air all we want, but KY can not be the fence for the systems or that is all it is- a bunch of cold air 😉
How funny Kentucky basketball is 4th most looked at topic on yahoo right now! VERY COOL
GO BIG BLUE!
Welcome home, Chris! Hope you had a GREAT time ing the “Big Apple.” but we are glad you are home!
Looking forward to seeing a more in depth analysis of the coming week’s weather from you, (after you have had some time to rest, and cheer on the CATS against Indiana, of course!) 😉
I do have to question the validity of temps in the 40s today, though…..our low for last night was forecast (locally) to be 22, but it got donw to 14, even with some cloud cover….right now, we have still not hit 40 as of yet. We might make it, but, we won’t make it very far into them, IMHO. But then, I am NOT the weather guy! That’s why you get the kudos for the weather stuff!
Once again, welcome home! You were missed!
the cats are looking impressive.
the ground is still good and frozen here
I just saw that too!
Chris, the title of this post made me think you were missing Lexington since this area is what is called the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. Don’t you want to come back so you can go to all the home games? How many times will we hear “superstar freshman John Wall” this season??
Today is very nice. I’ve been raking leaves that came from afar because we had our yard all nice and clean until the 50 mph winds on Wednesday. This happens every year. Somewhere there is a tree with huge leaves and they manage to blow our way at some point during the winter. Winters are so windy these days. 🙁
yep I mentioned that yesterday I think, and folks to our south in the mnts. of N.C…LOOK OUT…if your heading that way, beware!!! that dreaded ICE!!!
