Good Wednesday everyone. Your friendly weather dude is flying to New York City early today to watch the Cats take on UCONN in the Garden tonight. I will be in NYC until Friday evening so I will update as I can… but I will update. I can’t leave you guys out in the cold!!
Speaking of… we do have some cold coming our way and it is in a big hurry to get here.
The cold is being ushered in by our monster storm that is cranking across the upper midwest and Great Lakes today. This brought all the heavy rains to us Tuesday into early this morning. Now it’s time for the wind to take center stage as it will REALLY crank out there today. Gusts may approach 50mph in a few spots. This could cause some power outages and may also cause some damage. At the very least… you will likely be tracking down your Christmas decorations before the day is over. ![]()
You can track the sustained winds here…
Winds
The temps today will be the other big story. Readings will likely be well into the 50s early this morning then will come down in a big hurry from west to east. Thermometer readings will be in the low and mid 30s by the evening commute then fall into the upper teens by Thursday morning. Wow! Track the temp tumble…
Temps
We will still be holding on to some showers today… but nothing like the soaking we got last night. Here is your regional radar to follow the showers… that’s if you are into that kinda thing! ![]()

What about the rest of the outlook. Let’s break it down in headline form…
– Snow showers and flurries will dance about the area later this evening into Thursday morning. These may have just enough juice to create a few slick spots. Temps Thursday will be cold with mid 20s for highs and gusty winds will make it feel even colder.
– Thursday night will bring the coldest temps of the young season as we head down toward the 10-15 degree range.
– Friday will be partly sunny and cold with low 30s for highs.
-What to do with the weekend? That will be a headache as this southern system does not want to behave itself. Right now… a wintry mix of snow, rain or a touch of ice will be possible later Saturday into Sunday. How much remains to be seen.
– The models are also torn on a big storm threat by early and mid next week. Waffles anyone?
– One thing is for sure… it is going to get even colder and this whole pattern is threatening to lock in for the rest of the month! Could a top 10 coldest December be in the making? I think it makes a run at it.
– White Christmas odds are much higher this year compared to most! ![]()
Ok… thats all you get tonight. My flight leaves in 5 hours and I have to sleep for a few hours at least. I will give you updates as I can over the next few days… most likely late at night. You can also sign up to follow me on Twitter… @Kentuckyweather . I will be tweeting updates on the weather and about my trip to the big apple. I will send you guys some pics, too!
In closing… GO BIG BLUE!!!!!! Take care.

have a fun time in NYC Chris!
Thanks Chris for the update. You have to be dedicated to have a flight leaving in 5 hours and still send out a blog post. Have a great trip!
Some I’m lookin’ on the postive side of things…hopefully both systems behave themselves and we get a small snow (no ice) this weekend and then a good sized snow event next week. Yea I know…too good to be true. lol
So, the snowfall map for Saturday is now out? GO Big Blue
no school in Knox and Clay because of water being over roads
Water over the roads in Knox County including a couple spots on Highway 11 S
Thanks, Chris, for your dedication and for keeping us in the loop while you are in NY. Have a safe and enjoyable trip! GBB!!!!
have a good trip Chris, dont be going up there and taking pics of you in snow up to your knee caps!!! or we’ll all be IRATE!!! and HOSTILE!!…LOL…j/k..have fun..
as Andy mentioned earlier NO SCHOOL today for KNOX CO. due to high water, we had over 2″ easily alot roads under RUNNING WATER this morning…drive safe.
clear skies and a BALMY 57* down here along the border this morning, lets see where it ends up by late afternoon…
Thanks Chris for the update.. hope you have a great time watching BIG BLUE win in NYC!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!
6z run of GFS has went STUPID!!! what was a weekend threat of wintry weather has become a MILD,RAIN EVENT…SOUND FAMILIAR??…next weeks storm is giving us SOME backlash snows, then thats it, NADA right through CHRISTmas…yep its went stupid…hopefully 12z,and 18z, it will be off its hangover!!!
Bubbacasts have been simplfied to either:
Wet Willy = Same old thang’
Snowman = Good snow (at least 4″)
Life is complex enough, so I am lowering the conceptual bar:)
COLLLLLD then WARM when precip comes is the pattern of past decade and nothing changed yet.
I am afraid of flooding real bad flooding over the next couple weeks as yea we have cold air, but the ole WAA will gives us rain when systems come.
very sad indeed but until BUBBA and ROLO see otherwise thats just the truth.
all good CBC with COLD but nobody really cares about cold, just like tomm 20s for high then POOF as a system comes we get RAIN and WAA.LOL
Looks like a pretty good line of rain forming to the West of Lexington… must be the edge of the cold front?!? The wind is sure blowing here on Euclid Avenue! Be safe out there!
Frankfort airport just had a 51 MPH gust in the past hour.
LOL BubbaG! Those are terms even I can understand!
1.9 inches of rain in bowling green from this storm. still very windy here with leaves and trash cans blowing around now that there empty.
Its very windy here in Versailles. I’m not surprised to hear Frankfort airport reported that 51 MPH reading.
check out the temp gradients 33 in pad. and 57 here in knox co…
……..
over 4000 without power in knoxville tn. schools are dismissing like crazy due to no power, trees and powerlines down everywhere down there…its not peaches and cream here either right now
F & Hs, was one of my favorite shows as well. I love Dell Boy and their work van. I lived in Oxford and worked in High Wycombe. Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are great places to live and work.
Never saw much snow there. 12/8/1990 wI awoke ot about 6 inches in Oxford, most I saw in my 14 years. Haven’t seen much here since my return. My first winter in KY was 77-78. Moving from Nebraska I thought it was just “normal”. Now I know it spoiled me.
Wind chill is 19 in Paducah! By tonight, it will be FRIGID here!
yep even CRAZY/ DONT KNOW nothing HENRY has back off finally after 10 emails,
yesterday DREAM STORM BRING TEARS TO MY EYES, today will a storm.lol
next week will have a system not to far off this storm just passinhg track, probably further east but us in most of KY will be RAIN,RAIN,RAIN.
well as far as WIND, i think its been over blown, yea I have steady 20 plus wind but as far as damage none to be found.
update next week storm, RAIN,RAIN,RAIN.
track further east than this storm we just had but not enough.
nearly 9,000 KUB customers without electricity in the Knoxville,tn. area now…wow
O.K..here’s your WHITE CHRISTMAS DREAM STORM !!! HOT OFF THE 12z press..LOL….Heavy snowstorm for kentucky/tn. on Christmas day…lets look, endulge, delight in the sight cause the 18z will completely lose it…so Look at it while you can…

Used to be US air bases in some of those areas. Lots of funny shows in England.
A Touch of Frost was a big change for Dell Boy. Good show too though.
I remember two snows in the 1980’s and both were around Valentine’s day and were not forecast. Both about four inches of snow and lasted less than 24 hours on the ground.
yes dream storm indeed .. can you post the gfs 12Z for next week storm as well as the storm this weekwnd .. thoughts and comments on it???
just had a nice little rain shower here in SE Rowan county, Craney Holler. came straight down very fast and hard and sun was shining, blue blue sky, very odd.
Like Tim said, 12Z run of the GFS shows a snowstorm here on Christmas day. 🙂
Anyway…the system this weekend looks to bring rain to us. Tuesday’s system is looking less impressive with no snow here. Surprise anyone?
sleet here in nicholasville
Tim, our power was off for nearly two hours earlier this morning here at work. Phones and everything. Got it back at 11 am. But the wind is getting stronger and stronger here, too. Currently, sustained at about 35, with higher gust to about 45 at this time.
NOt at all Wxman, not at all….
Just heard on a Tennessee station that in the mountains of East Tennessee, they had recorded a wind gust of 101 mph!
have to agree on saturday i was never that impressed to start at best it will be lgt frz rain for the north. However every single model run is drastically different with Tuesday’s system.
Tim.. I like your 12z GFS better!!
NEW GFS ..nada 🙁
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwpara/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_ten_384m.gif
I think we’ll just copy and paste this run, all the way til Christmas…:)
New 12z GFS looks BORING and no threat of any snow on the 384 hr (Christmas Day) IF we are to get snow, it would have to come from a SURPRISE, something the models NOT picking up as it once did.
talk about crazy weather….central Pa. had heavy snow last night then rain…NOW VENANGO CO. ne Pa. is under a TORNADO WARNING !!! with a thunderstorm and 46* after getting 6″ of snow last night…talk about head spinning weather…goodness!!!
It’s only December. I can’t ever remember getting much snow this early. Problem is I can’t remember much snow at all any winter for the past 11.
This month had SO much promise. But, it looks more like March with all the rain in the forecast.
Where did the snow go?
56 MPH gust at the mesonet station in Mercer County!
Same place it has gone the last 11 years. Looks like the best we can ever do anymore is to hope for snow, because that is the closest we’ll get around here to what we used to get. Let’s face it, as we have said a million times before: it doesn’t snow around here anymore! >:(
Dont know if I can take much more of this “harsh snowy Ky. winter”. HA
F & Hs, was one of my favorite shows as well. I love Dell Boy and their work van. I lived in Oxford and worked in High Wycombe. Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are great places to live and work.

I remember a February snow in the 80’s, right around Valentine’s day…we got tons of snow in London, KY…1985…I was a Freshman at Sue Bennett College…we were supposed to go see Alabama in concert at Rupp and we couldn’t get there. I think we had thunder and lightning with that snow storm too…
GOOD TIMES!!!!
It was a job at USAF High Wycombe, later called RAF Daws Hill, that brought me to England. I spent a lot of time at RAF Upper Heyford, RAF Croughton and the US Navy facility at West Ruislip as well.
Good times…
Well, guess I’ll just have to keep the hope. The snows like 1987 are a thing of the past.
Can’t believe Chris flew in this wind!!!
Yeah…I’d say his arms are tired. : )
yeah its a shame Dec is the only time it has ever snowed in KY and since the models 3 weeks out show no snow for Christmas day its gospel 😉
02-03 featured a big snowfall early that winter.
I used to got to Upper Heyford and to West Ruislip for their PX’s – over 20 years ago.
You probably know where East Cote is too, since that was a Navy and Marine admin HQ. Been there a few times too, but that is gone now.
Then again, so is the Navy building in London. That is where the Deputy C&C of Naval Forces Europe was at.
9/11 changes a lot of things.
Hey, after the last 11 years, I’m just sayin’! 😉
Naw, he just had to stand out there for a while and the wind did the work!
Everyone nailed the wind with this forecast. I guess scattered snow showeres this evening will be a no show? I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to be in an airplane with this wind. I hope everyone who got a chance to go see the game tonight enjoys every moment of it. Go Big Blue!!!
Have a great time in NYC chris. Go cats! Let’s make it 9-0. Love the pix you tweeted.
You know, they fly planes into hurricanes. A 30mph wind gust is nothing.
some of the 18z models increasing the concern for frz rain saturday night.
so anyone know if we have a shot at snow showers tonight?? i dont think so…but id like some input lol
Surely we’ll get that. Seems it’s never cold enough when the moisture is around.
Could someone please post the 18 zss for this week end as well as next week ?
Looks like for us to get any of the activity that we see to our North, we would need a shift in wind direction… I’m not banking on it. I’m also not getting too awfully bent out of shape about this weekend… we’ll see what the models are saying on Friday morning/afternoon… besides… I’m going to Snowshoe on Monday… always a “White Guarantee” there!
well i think with the ground being frozen that if it don’t fall frozen that it will freeze on contact just my 2 cents
weekend little rain showers sprinkles, next week rain.
pretty simple.

here is the GFS 18z run
i am headed to pn tommorow and am pumped they will be making snow while i am there!!! I am not to thrilled for any snow here in central ky over the next several days myself, seems like alot of these systems are going to be like the one we just had but there is always jan feb and march
Chris must not be expecting anything major this weekend or this evening since he hasn’t posted lately or maybe he’s having a great time in new york. Were is everyone at? Buying tickets for upcoming UK games?
Chris says “I will give you updates as I can over the next few days… most likely late at night.”
are you still headed to P.N.S. on Friday? If so we need to meet! Put a face with the name! Regardless… get amped! Our season has just begun!
… did I mention that I am going to Chicago for Christmas!?! Guess what I am guaranteed this year!?! Not to rub it in though… I’ll bring some back for you guys! I believe in the giving of Christmas!
We were at the US Embassy summer of 2008. A UK guard there told me the Italians us the Navy Building at North Audley now that the Navy pulled out and consolidated in Naples. Daws Hill has closed as has Heyford, Eastcote, Blenheim Crescent, Little Risington, RAF Bicester and Greenham Common; RAF Fairford is still up and running as is Wellford. All of these are / where about 30 minutes from Oxford. Times have changed. The big ones – Lakenheath and Mildenhall are still booming however. Times have changed….
I figured it would probably be a while since he’s out of town. I guess he deserves to have a life outside of weather? 🙂 He has still found time to update on twitter. Go big blue!!!
I must be turning into the Grinch…I no longer seem to care. Something is definitely wrong with me.
It’s my age. Can’t remember it.
yeah lot less time to type a couple words than look at models trends and such
In the infamous words of Bubba G from the past
33=rain
32=dry
New 18z GFS.. I don’t think its picking up a major storm sometime in the near future.. too much energy in the artic air and the southern stream.. one should pop up in the next few days in the short range?
On a side note.. it does begin CLIPPER MANIA. Somewhat colder then the 12z run.
BubbaCast has been pretty accurate in the past 3-4 years.. I’m starting to believe in it more then the models!
You can see the RAIN DOME pretty good on this one.
http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/loop/usa-1mo-loop.html
Well, if that’s all they had in Lexington I’m glad to hear it. Here in Eastern KY roofs were blown off, trees uprooted….I wouldn’t want to be on a plane in that wind….no WAY!
Anyone know if we will get any snow tonight that is either wrap around or lake effect?
yea meet me friday morning in the parking lot. i will be leaving but i’ll be wearing a red jacket likely white snowboard, actaully just meet me near the outside ticket place. at about 11am sound good?
MAYBE JUST MAYBE SINCE THE GFS ISN’T PICKING UP ON ANY STORMS WE’LL GET A BLIZZARD, WHEN IT DOES PICK THEM UP THEY DON’T HAPPEN OR TURN TO RAIN SO MAYBE WE HAVE A BETTER CHANCE SINCE THEY HAVE DISAPPEARED
can we expect any snow tonight???
Holy Shit! What a fucking game! I wishe ESPN could get their act together and get us some video.
9 and ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!
the 00z models have cold rain late saturday i guess that’s good news. the new gfs does have some light snow tuesday from the a storm along the front.

I will read time to time that
If you want to buy a house, you will have to receive the personal loans. Moreover, my father commonly utilizes a credit loan, which seems to be really fast.
