Good Monday afternoon gang. This big storm we have blogged about for a while now will be whipping through here over the next few days and is going to be a humdinger! Heavy rains… high winds… cold and snow showers are all in the cards from Tuesday through Thursday.
Here is the breakdown…
– Heavy rains move in Tuesday into Tuesday Night. 1″-2″ will be possible in some spots.
– Temps rise into the 50s by Tuesday evening and last into Wednesday morning.
– Low pressure strengthens to our west and north creating possible damaging winds.
– HIGH WIND WATCH in effect for most of Kentucky for Wednesday. Gusts to 50+mph will be possible!!!
– Temps start in the 50s Wednesday then fall below freezing from west to east Wednesday evening.
– Backlash snow showers will move in for Wednesday night into Thursday with light accumulations possible.
– Windy and cold weather for Thursday with highs in the 20s and possible single digit wind chills!
How is that for a wicked weather period?!!
Beyond that… the system coming in for the weekend certainly has potential to bring wintry weather to the region. I am getting a little more impressed with this system as it is something for us to keep a close eye one! I am itching to throw out the first “Threat Mode” of the season! ![]()
There is also likely to be something on it’s heels next week that can bring snow and wintry weather to us! As I have repeatedly said… get on the winter train folks or you are going to be left behind! This morning was yet another prime example of this as some forecasters scored their second miss in less than 48 hours. ![]()
I will have a bigger update later tonight so check back. Take care.

Will this potential wind watch be remotely close to the one we had last time that caused major damage and power outages for days? This time I am prepared. I bought a generator over the summer just in case.
Even the weather channel had a 20% chance of precip for this morning. I guess because it was so light that no one made a big deal about it and honestly for some, this morning probably caused more problems than saturday’s snow. Will the wind be similar to last year when we had wind as a system passed through or will it be off and on?
You da man, CB! It was verrrry slick this morning on my way to work. I’m anxious to see what this week has in store! My students have already been asking what your predictions are for this winter!
The High Wind Watch is bad news….Christmas decorations will be everywhere!!
Tell them you’ll still be seeing them in July. lol.
You rock Chris! Thanks for taking such good care of your blog buddies!
WXman, those were my first thoughts as well!! Christmas decorations will be all over the place.
What about this system for Saturday? Any updates on it? My hubby’s birthday party is that night, and I need to know if I am going to have to spend hours making gumbo. If the weather is bad I might not have to make it. Thanks
I think you are thinking about the one that was a storm like this combined with the remnants of Ike. Those two combined created winds to 75 MPH near Louisville and well over Tropical Storm strength elsewhere. This won’t be that strong…but it will still create a lot of trouble because we haven’t had winds like that for a while now.
Well, here we go again folks. I had to replace my roof last year. Let’s hope and pray we don’t have that kind of wind damage. Yikes. Sounds like we need to bring in those Christmas decorations for the next few days.
Thanks for the update, Chris.
Char, I know what you mean! We had to replace our roof last year, too, due to the January and February winds we had! fortunately, most of my outside decorations are near to or on the ground, so hopefully, I won’t have much damage.
Chris, you sure are giving us a little bit of everything with this post. Can’t wait to see what your thoughts are.
I did talk to a few of my work friends, and a family member today who were all surprised at the snow onSaturday…I just smiled, and told them they were listening to the wrong people! 😉
Thanks for the reply, WXman. As far as the Christmas decorations go, it sounds like neighbors will be “giving” back decorations to their fellow neighbors. Oh! I am dreading this! No power…no COMPUTER! UGH!
Wxman, I have folks with the inflatible decorations all around me. Not fond of them myself, so I hope theirs don’t wind up in my yard! 😉 IF they do, at least, if they are not torn all to pieces, I will know who they go back to, hopefully. but it always seems we get this weather on garbage day, so I will pribably be hunting my trash cans! 🙁
well just when u think OHH YEA we get bunxh of CRAP.
SYSTEM SATURDAY is going to be mix at best for alot of us, lex north has shot at snow, right now warm air might kill 80 percent of us out by the time it gets here.
15 for a low friday morening then MIX for Saturday. BAAAAA HUMBUGGGGGGGGGDFedfHZdHG
but it could change as many of u that watch know.
really I dont know what look exciting on todays runs so far bout Saturday, cold air push north of KY on latest runs.
but we are 4 plus days out though.
Rolo, I’m going to Ohio to see my kids this weekend, and I’m thinkin I should take a few more changes of clothes, right??
Coffeylady, I hear you in regards to the inflatible decorations. In all honesty, the wind should take those away. 😉
You inspired me to do this. Sorry! 🙂
The wind was incredible…
It took away my neighbor’s inflatible.
The next door neighbor was sad…
Deep down, though, I was really really glad.
The high winds have a purpose after all…
Yet…my trash cans might over turn and fall…
But for those neighbors with the inflatibles…they have the living gal.
I hear ya about the trash thing. Seems like I pick our neighbors up out of our yard every Wednesday! As far as the inflatables, if that wind comes in, they’ll be looking like hot air balloons!
right now central/ southen ohio look like several inches of snow at the least.
Looks like 18z gfs, especially the new model,is colder than the 12z run for Sat. Could get interesting. Will be fun watching the runs the next few days. Hopefully fun and games for this weekend.
I’m with you on this one rolo as much as I love snow this weekend looks to be one of those on the fence situations. Even with that being said the GFS doesn’t have a lot of precipitation falling in KY. The new 18z GFS is wetter but also warmer near the end of the system with most of KY getting above freezing before the precip moves out. I guess we will have to wait and see but this to me looks like it will be dissapointing for most except for extreme northern KY. There is still a lot of time but usually we have the opposite going on we look good for snow 4-5 days out and then we get a mix. If we are looking at a mix 4-5 days out why wouldn’t we get rain. Simple math to me haha sorry snow lovers(including myself).
Boyle County- There was no measureable precip frozen or liquid at this location since midnight today. Was a raw windy afternoon.
interesting 18z gfs keeping 32 line on ky tn border, there is one main reason i can’t buy that solution. when was the last time we got a southern system that the entire state stayed at or below 32? gfs is downplaying possbile warm air accompanying the storm itself. no model says this but from a historical perspective i’d put an early call to something like this: Paducah to Maysville all snow, south of here to a hopkinsville to ashland line mix south of here rain. and yes northern and western ky stand best chance of significant snow. again just from a historical perspective with reguard to how these things tend to play out.
yep we can only hope fer sum luck as we get closer, but it going be WARM as of right now IMO too TOMMY.
well warm meaning no snow.
So here we go again with the “always a week away” snowstorm! My grandparents are gearing up tonight for 8-12″ followed by below zero temps! Man I wish we’d get that stuff around here again! Haven’t had anything like that here since the blizzard of ’96 (14 years)!
Well, I dread the mid-week storm as I’m sure everyone else does. As far as the weekend potential, I’ll just take the wait and see approach. Chris did say to trust no model at this time in reference to that storm. IF we do have snow, surely hope my son is home from EKU by that time. Can’t wait for the next update.
I remember a few years ago during the wind storm when our Christmas decorations nearly beat me to death!!!
What is really amazing about the current storm is the fact that there are winter weather warnings and advisories stratching in an unbroken line from the Hills above Santa Barbara, CA to the UP of MI – some 2000 miles! :0 That is not to mention the advisories and warnings that are likely north of the US/Canada border! Let’s get something like that here, please, with the axis of heaviest snow right over C. KY!
Hopefully over se ky. Mainly the Clay County area. Or maybe we can share the axis of heaviest snow. Honestly though, the odds of us getting a big time snow are extremely low.
as ole KEN MELLONS sings,
oh did i mention I WENT CRAZY FOR AWHILE!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOO!
If we can only hold this pattern into january we will get a big snow. Its a little early for us know but if this wild pattern is here come january were in buisness. It will probably be gone.
Tommy! PNS opening @ noon on WED!!! Pretty stoked! I’m headed to Snowshoe on Monday!!! They have finally gotten a couple of good snows this season! I’m headed to PNS on Friday morning if you wanna roll!
Oh yeah… Changed my username this Winter for good luck! Used to be “endleswavz” on the blog! Lates! Pray for snow!
i’ll be in town friday morning lol i am headed up thu afternoon after my last final. i’ll be camping that night, but have to report back for enslavement (job) at 2pm the following day.
So far, same song and dance- cold air comes, most of the moisture is gone. Not seeing any trend busters on the horizon yet.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as a high wind WATCH! I don’t get that one. Then again that’s why we have a weather dude.
One thing we can always count on in Ky.
Almost every kind of severe weather forcast usually happens. Snow on the other hand even at a 100% chance is iffy in Ky. With that said I would bet the farm we will have those potentially damaging winds.
Anybody know what the trend for the weekend system is on the 0z GFS??
Can’t wait to hear your latest thoughts soon Chris!
Moderate Snow with Visibilty under 1/2 mile…JUST NOT FAIR..lol
