4PM UPDATE
Severe thunderstorms continue to roll eastward across western and central Kentucky. Reports of 100mph wind gusts have been reported across southern Illinois near the center of this “Landcane”. Hopkinsville in western Ky recorded a wind gust of 80mph a little earlier.
This whole wind machine continues to move eastward across the state and may result in widespread wind damage. This may also spawn a few tornadoes. I will keep updating the blog with more frequent updates through TWITTER. You can see those in the top right of the blog or sign up to follow me and get those updates on your cell phones free of charge.
Take care.
Good afternoon gang. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now in effect for most of central and eastern Kentucky until 8pm this evening…
Current warnings…
To be blunt… this thing is a monster and may produce extreme wind damage to those areas in its path. It may also spin up some tornadoes as well to go along with large hail and torrential rains that may cause flash flooding. You can track this thing almost due eastward on radar…
Wow… that is impressive! When you see a storm cluster (MCS) take on the look of a tropical system on radar… LOOK OUT!
A TORNADO WATCH is already out for most of western Kentucky…
Current warnings…
The latest risk map from the SPC…
In addition to the severe weather threat… a FLASH FLOOD WATCH is out for much of the area as well…
I will have updates through the afternoon and will also send out TWITTER updates that you will find in the top right corner of the blog. You can also sign up to get these updates on your cell phone free of charge. This is how I will be sending out the latest warnings.
Take care.

Chris, that system looks really MEAN!!!
I will be following you on here or twitter, or something!
Andy Rose, how are you, and have you heard from Tim? Did he have his surgery, and if so, do you know how it went?
Chris, we will be listening for the latest. I have you and TG both in the tray! 😉

New watch coming soon for our neck of the woods…
Most everyone says still holding strong and looking bad, Henry says different…lol…
http://www.accuweather.com/video-on-demand.asp?partner=netweather&traveler=0&zipcode=
That thing is crazy! Looks like a hurricane!
all I can say to the radar is WOW!!!!
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH JUST ISSUED. that is an outrage several lesser events got tornado warnings this season already. this should be a tornado watch since i already see two areas where tornadoes can form
1. when the warm frontal storms merge with the main cluster
2. within the commahead of the mcs
awful season for spc continues what are they thinking??
Havent’ really heard from him he posted earlier today but has been mum on the possible surgery
That link is not to Henry
Shane or Chris what is after this are we expecting heavy rain overnight or will this storm be it ?
This thing is no joke. PLEASE keep an eye on this… holy cow…
surgery scheduled for next friday the 15th. at central baptist in lex.. so if your in the area drop by and see me. I’ll be the one on the 3rd floor screaming my head off!!!…:(
I agree. It’s an outrage that this is not a Tornado Watch.
wow look at that it looks like a hurricane eye in the boothill of mo!!!!! it’s safe to say the reds game will be a no go tonight 🙁
Yeah, even accuweather is calling it ” an inland Hurricane!!! ” it was quit a mean little monster when it ran through Missouri..It is kind of weakening a bit, but the sun has been out in full force here all afternoon and the temp. is up to 77*…FUEL FOR THE FIRE!!..:(
Anyone doing any storm chasing with this?
Inland Hurricane Heading into Western Kentucky
The Inland Hurricane, as named by AccuWeather.com, continues to move east causing significant wind damage so far
(go to read full headline, I cant get mine to pull up)
Anyone reading…….I am in Jessamine County, just south of Lexington, should I get my daughter from school , at 3:45 she will be getting on a bus
Can anyone tell me what time this thing should be reaching this area? I have to be out from around 5 to around 7:30 and want to be prepared.
why not err on the safe side? There have been some serious wind reports coming out of the west, and lots of lightning. Estimates indicate the main storm will be in the Lexington area around 5:00 PM.
Guys I have to go to ezel this evening for a birthday party should i stay home the way all you guys are talking this thing could be a bad boy. Chris what do you think?
Belski at WAVE says Louisville around 4:00. That would mean Lex around 5:00, and points east a little later.
I’ve moved my 4:00 appointment up to 3:00 to get out of downtown Lex before it hits.
Derecho+Rush Hour=bad news.
Not now of course, but it was to one with him giving an update around noon.
Storm chasing in KY is a really bad idea for multiple reasons. Storm spotting on the other hand is very important..
Carbondale IL reported a windgust of 100 mph at 1:28 CST! Oh my stars!!!
looks like central and northern ky. GONNA GET CLOBBERED WITH HEAVY RAIN IF NOT SEVERE WEATHER ALSO, southern, and south east ky.. gonna be in line for SEVERE STROMS, ITS GETTING REALLY WARM AND HUMID FEELING DOWN HERE!!!…up to 80* on my back porch, with GUSTY WINDS!
i’m sure you will be knocked out until its time for PT
hey matt. looks like a couple tornado warnings to your west along the border of ky/tn..!!!
Yes I was wrong…this IS going to HAMMER the Bluegrass…
Is that an eye wall forming in this thing??!!
WXMAN, why is that? i have never given it much thought but is it because of the geography of the state? i have some friends in louisburg, ks area who would drive west a few hours onto the plains and chase if the opprotunity arose.
sky is dead white hear i’ll take the rain but not the 100mph gusts that is bad!#@
Sure looks like it… is it a cat 1 or a cat 2? I haven’t seen anything like this in a while….
When will the stroms be in the London Corbin area?
What’s going on in Bowling Green? My son is at WKU.
Kentucky has too many hills and curvy roads that would cause you, the storm chaser, to lose track of a tornado and make it much more difficult to stay out of its path.
The geography and also because what we have are HPP cells (High Precipitation) and you almost never can see the tornado and it’s dangerous. And also because our roads don’t connect at 90 degree angles like in the Plains.
Guys take this thing seriously. I can’t put a time on it but it will be affecting most of everyone tonight.
so after this there will be no more rain for the weekend ? and will you be doing updates on your blog ?
It looks as if this system is moving ne now instead of east. It might just nip us here in Whitley co. Does it look that way to anyone else?
It looks like the system is moving due east to me. Keep in mind that it is rotating counter-clockwise, which is why if you are looking at the southern part of it, it could appear to be moving NE.
yeah Tina the problem is, that we are in the very warm sector and severe storms are popping up now just to our west I think the one that moved across the state line into the albany area prompted a S.T.warning for the county to the south in tn..so it could get dicy in the next hr. or so.. You folks in central ky. you better watch the HIGH WATER PROBLEMS that looks like very heavy rainfall in that cluster of storms…
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR MCCREARY, WAYNE CO. UNTIL 445 PM
I am posting the warnings through TWITTER and that is linked in the upper right hand part of the blog so please check there for updates.
very loud thunder, intense stuff here CB no lightening yet
you update quick chris! thanks.
very hvy rain in versailles. high water problems will delvop quickly in some areas that already are waterlogged.
evansville getting rocked by the eye now
lots of thunder in the lexington area – not a lot of wind yet…..crossing fingers.
TORNADO WARNING FOR MCCREARY COUNTY
Why was there a moderate risk for the storms when they were in Western Ky, but as they move east, we’re still under a slight risk?
We are currently under a severe t-storm warning, but McCreary County, to my south is under a tornado warning. The rain has been exrtremely heavy,a nd the lightning very intense! WE have a lull right now, but some of the clouds to the west are still ominus looking.
chris, I am trying my best ot get onto twitter, but it doesn’t like me….
I don’t think we have sen tl last of the severe stuff either, Tim. Also, on the other, I have already put you on my prayer list. Please have someone post and let us know how you are doing afterward.

Tornado Warning for Eastern Madison
Thanks Chris…what a day for me…Power was out at my house (Isom in Letcher County) from around 9am until about 4pm due to the earlier round of storms. My long day will be much longer…more storms coming my way.
I’m in Magoffin Co. We don’t have any warnings or watches on us so far. Is this getting any weaker? Should I expect bad weather here as well?
Reports of injuries and cars blown off roads in Richmond area
John Belski has reported that he recieced reports of injuries in madison countym richmond area, from a possible tornado. reports of cars blown off the road…here in carter county its storming pretty good but no wind
theres been a funnel cluod reported outside Keavy area sw of london
Is Frankfort out of the woods now or is more going to develop?
I live close to Keavy and my Mom lives in Keavy. Everything is clear right now. But it sure got rough here for a while. I’ve never had hail hit one side of the house and then get scary quite and then hail started hitting a different side of the house. Hope that everyone is ok. And I hope that’s all of the storms.
Anyone on from Richmond area
We ended up with metal roofing, insulation and an unknown piece of wood after the storms passed us in Northern Estill County. There’s no damage around us that we know of, so are assuming the stuff came from Madison County. Wicked winds, 1.3 inches of rain in less than an hour. Hope it is done for the night so we can get out and get the animals fed.
Does anyone have any info far as EKU being affected (other than just “power outages”, that is?!)by the poss. tornado?! My cousin’s son is there, and she’s not getting a cell signal, e-mail/comp., etc etc, trying to reach him?! Our cable for Ch. 27 is pretty crappy since they went to HD, soooo….??! Anyone that knows something at all (not rumors…), it would be greatly appreciated.(My cousin is recovering from a horrific car crash back in the fall-yet another surgery-so she needs to know SOMETHING-anything at all-about the situation @ EKU…??!)
WYMT is reporting Pea to Marble Size Hail in Hazard right now.
I just talked to my best friend who lives on 52 close to where 1295 turns to go to Kirksville near Richmond. She just said, we are alive but my house is gone. Her father who has alteimers has had damage. He lives next door to her. Her cousin who lives across the road has lost her house. My friend who is newly retired also, said that she has salvaged 2 lamps and that is all. Please pray for these folks. They are really good people. Such a sad time for them.
Waco was also hit but don’t know anything about that area. I’m from Poosey Ridge and Kirksville are so I’m very familiar with those folks. I’m in downtown Richmond. We are fine on the South end of town.
*HEN EGG SIZE HAIL IN ESTILL CO.
*OFFICIALLY IN A FLASH FLOOD WARNING IN PIKE CO.
Hale the size of quarters. Gays Creek, Perry County.
Sharon,
Glad to hear your friends are OK, not so happy about the damage, tho. 🙁
How far are you from EKU?? My cousin Tami is STILL trying to locate her son @ EKU…she got one cell signal, rang once, nothing since…he has apparantly tried to call HER, but again…rang once, she answered, nothing but silence…??
Any chance that another strom complex moves in here over night towards morning or are we done with the sortms for a while?
This has been an incredible and horrible day of severe weather… my thoughts and prayers are with everyone that’s been effected.
Looks like to me storms are refiring off to the west.
I have heard there was a mudslide at phelps (in PIKE Co.) and flooding in elkhorn city to pikeville.
Lots of flash flooding in and around Pikeville….I have a student who can’t get home from the movies because the road is closed to his house. THere are many others whose roads are covered.
Ive heard that another one will come through overnight & last into the mid morning but not sure if its true or not
Chris or anyone else,
in pike co. we are having so much high water, do you think they’ll make the flash flood warning into a flood warning and extend it into tomorrow. The Tug Fork River on the border is supposed to be at a moderate flood stage by morning. Local creeks and streams will probably be worse in the morning because of some more t-storms traveling southeast getting ready to hit pike co.
I’m just a few blocks away. We really didn’t have a lot of wind in town. Most of it was outside the city from what I’m hearing. I had my window open and my back door open. It was protected by my back porch but it was never that bad here in town. My husband just came through the by-pass beside EKU and it does not appear to be damaged.
I m glad to read thiz post…
