Good Saturday and Happy Kentucky Derby Day to one and all. This is a day where the eyes of the world are on our beloved state and it is our time to shine. Now all we need to do is get mother nature to shine instead of raining on our big day. That may be asking a bit too much given the weather pattern of the weekend.

A cold front will continue to settle southward across the state bringing waves of showers and thunderstorms with it. We have a shot at seeing the northern part of the state… including Louisville… to dry out for a couple of hours later this afternoon. Let us hope the timing of it works out for The Run For The Roses! Here is the radar for your Derby tracking needs…

Areas south of the front may have enough instability for some strong or even severe storms. These have been a no show in recent days so we will give this front one more shot at firing up some hefty storms. Today’s best shot will be across the southern part of the state. Here is where the Storm Prediction Center thinks the severe threat will setup today…

Latest Day 1 convective outlook

Locally heavy rains will continue to be a threat out there today in many areas. As the front hangs up… rain and storms will go in coverage and intensity tonight into Sunday as they become widespread. Some very heavy rainfall is likely across our region and this could lead to some high water problems. Exactly where the heavy rain axis sets up won’t be known until later tonight. The NAM has shifted farther to the south with the heaviest rains bringing 4″+ totals to much of southern and southeastern Kentucky. The GFS is farther north with widespread 2″-4″ rains through Monday. Either way… a lot of folks are going to get a heck of a rainfall before the weekend is over with. We will continue to monitor this setup and have updates throughout the weekend so make sure you check back with us.

Something else to watch this weekend will be the temps. We should see a decent temp gradient setting up from north to south across the region through Sunday. Check out what the NAM is showing in terms of temps…

However you slice it… the temps this weekend are not going to be very nice at all for most of the state!

Again… I will have updates through the weekend so check back in. You can also follow me on twitter which you will also find in the upper right hand corner of the side panel.
