Good Saturday and Happy Kentucky Derby Day to one and all. This is a day where the eyes of the world are on our beloved state and it is our time to shine. Now all we need to do is get mother nature to shine instead of raining on our big day. That may be asking a bit too much given the weather pattern of the weekend.
A cold front will continue to settle southward across the state bringing waves of showers and thunderstorms with it. We have a shot at seeing the northern part of the state… including Louisville… to dry out for a couple of hours later this afternoon. Let us hope the timing of it works out for The Run For The Roses! Here is the radar for your Derby tracking needs…
Areas south of the front may have enough instability for some strong or even severe storms. These have been a no show in recent days so we will give this front one more shot at firing up some hefty storms. Today’s best shot will be across the southern part of the state. Here is where the Storm Prediction Center thinks the severe threat will setup today…
Locally heavy rains will continue to be a threat out there today in many areas. As the front hangs up… rain and storms will go in coverage and intensity tonight into Sunday as they become widespread. Some very heavy rainfall is likely across our region and this could lead to some high water problems. Exactly where the heavy rain axis sets up won’t be known until later tonight. The NAM has shifted farther to the south with the heaviest rains bringing 4″+ totals to much of southern and southeastern Kentucky. The GFS is farther north with widespread 2″-4″ rains through Monday. Either way… a lot of folks are going to get a heck of a rainfall before the weekend is over with. We will continue to monitor this setup and have updates throughout the weekend so make sure you check back with us.
Something else to watch this weekend will be the temps. We should see a decent temp gradient setting up from north to south across the region through Sunday. Check out what the NAM is showing in terms of temps…
However you slice it… the temps this weekend are not going to be very nice at all for most of the state!
Again… I will have updates through the weekend so check back in. You can also follow me on twitter which you will also find in the upper right hand corner of the side panel.
If you are looking to lose some money on a trifecta bet… here ya go… (make sure to box it )

I picked the favorite, I Want Revenge, out of my office pool Friday so you know that is the kiss of death to his chances!
Happy Derby Day and take care.

Good luck and safe trip to all the Derby contenders. I went with General Quarters, Desert Party, and a super big longshot, Summer Bird.
At least it’s not hot today. I think the horses will like the cooler weather. The women may freeze in their Derby dresses but that’s just another reason why I stay home. I wouldn’t want a hat dripping water on me all afternoon. Happy Derby Day!! 🙂
Chris, you weren’t kidding about you drawing I Want Revenge in the office pool being the kiss of death. He was scratched this morning.
🙁
I drew Mine that Bird, so I’m hoping for a long shot win!
I drew Regal Ransom which made me happy since he was my pick along with Chocolate Candy.
Wish I had bet on Musket Man since I found out he has a bottle of Guinness every morning.
I picked the now favorite fresian fire a few days ago.
moderate risk of excessive rainfall tommorow for the south.

“MINE THAT BIRD”!!!!:D
(Refer to previous post…)
No Derby for us today…my “Next-to-Dad” Uncle back in hospital due to Liver transplant in March…but I still plunked down my whole $50 limit on “Mine That Bird”!?~ I HAD TO DO IT!!???- I also had “Hold Me Back” somewhere in the top 3…confusion here…??! (First time w/an actual “Bookie”…ok…2nd. time, but most I ever won on any one race was like $22 bucks?!- I had 2 “Place” and 1 “Show” the previous 3 races today…nice little pocket-full of ‘change’…??!;)
We did GOOOOD, Rhonda!;)
This is a 1st time win for me! You gotta love the long shots!
Chris, if you read this, could you give a little forecast for next weekend (Mother’s Day weekend)? I’m getting married and was hoping for an ourdoor wedding!!
Things not looking great at this point. Some of the models have it raining, others have the rain just to the south of the state, but close enough that it could cause a lot of clouds and a few scattered showers. At this point I would make sure I had back up plans for an indoor wedding ready.
I had to laugh out loud when I heard that I Want Revenge had been pulled. I had just read what Chris had said. Sorry for the bad luck Chris but it did make for a good laugh after you called it sooooo well.
That’s kinda what I was thinking as well. We have our backup plan ready. I don’t mind the clouds, but couldn’t take the rain. I guess we’ll see what happens as we get closer!
