Good Tuesday bloggers! The summer warmth of the past few days is now over and it has been one heck of a blast of heat for this time of year. But, that is behind us and we are looking at a very stormy pattern setting up for the rest of the week. I am also looking at the chance this holds into Kentucky Derby Weekend and even into next week.
As I noted in my Monday blog… the pattern is ripe for west to east moving showers and thunderstorms around here. This setup is one that can spawn some strong storms and put down heavy rains in areas that get repeat storm action. Some showers and storms will be rolling through here today and you can track the rains as they work in west to east…
The Storm Prediction Center is HINTING at a chance for a rouge severe storm this afternoon and evening across parts of our region. Here is their latest forecast map…
As I mentioned with earlier posts… a cold front works into the state later today and slows down before stalling out across us. This front will be the focal point for clusters of showers and storms over the next several days…
GFS Wednesday Evening
GFS Thursday Evening
The main low pressure system will be camped out across the plains states through Friday and this will keep us in a warm and humid airmass that will feed the rain and storm threat. The low will head toward the Great Lakes by Saturday dragging the main front in here and could result in widespread showers and storms and a possible increase in the overall severe weather threat Friday night. My concern is this front may try to slow down or stall out just to our south for Derby day…
GFS Saturday Morning
The weaker the surface low in the lakes… the better the chance we see this front causing us some rain problems this weekend. That is certainly something to watch.
Next week looks stormy as well, so buckle up and get ready for the ride! ![]()
I will update any thunderstorm threat around here as needed today so be sure to check back. I will also be putting updates on twitter and you can sign up to follow me there. You will also notice I have added a twitter box in the top right hand corner that will show my updates for you non twitterers.
Have a great Tuesday and take care.

Thanks, Chris. As always, I’ll keep my eyes, ears and mind tuned to the weather over the next several days.
Thanks Chris. I hope it doesnt get nasty here today!
Thanks Chris. Looks like a wet Derby week. Wonder how that affects the festivities….hope the storms don’t get severe….don’t want that. But, we are getting a little dry, and do not want the water table to get too low again.
I really don’t like the fronts taking us residence over us, but, I guess we will eventually evict them, and get back to some nice weather. Other than your thought about heavy rains, it does not look to be a total washout. So, I am hoping for the best. I guess April is making sure to rain all her showers out to bring us a LOT of May flowers, huh? 🙂
Have a good day, and thanks Chris, for the update. I know you will be watching the storms, and we’ll know it if they start getting heavy.
I signed up for twitter, but I guess I just don’t know how to tweet! 😉
I’ve enjoyed being back in the bluegrass a few days, and glad the weather held out for it. Now I’m about to head back to the mountains of WV and see the rain set up shop for a good long while. I know I’m going to keep an eye on the potential for flooding if we get too much rain. BTW, I’m also on Twitter now, @ WxManShane.
WXman, Mitch….where are your comments? Severe weather possibilities and no comments from you all? You two ok? I really appreciate your comments and thoughts.
And as always Chris as well.
Hey Coffee!! follow me, I’m moomom61. I think I’m the only 1. LOL
day 4 risk now from the spc defintely a severe threat later on friday.
Coffeelady, I don’t know how to twitter either, but I signed up. I know just enough about computers to make me dangerous!
I can’t twitter because I don’t have that many text’s I can get on my phone. This technology thing is about to get the best of me. I don’t have a wedding this week-end so sounds like that is a good thing. Middle of May the weddings begin. Maybe the storms will be out by then!!
Sorry to hear you are disappointed tonight Chris. I’m following you on twitter. I guess you are right its just one of those nights. But be positive. Your work out routine and weight loss has inspired me! I’ll start my diet and exercise next week!
