Good Monday everyone! Here is hoping you had a wonderful weekend. What was not to like about the weather out there? We had plenty of sunshine and nice mild temps and that is a trend we will see for a couple more days before the weather takes a walk on the wild side. Winter is trying to make a comeback once again meaning we have a nice battle with spring shaping up across the country over the next few weeks.
These two guys just can’t seem to get along…
So, when the boys start acting up… mother nature can get a little crazy on us and that is exactly what is happening today across the plains states. A big time severe weather outbreak is likely across the central part of the country while a blizzard rages across the Dakotas. The same Dakotas that were near 80 just a day ago!
Here is a map showing all the advisories and warnings across the country…
| Tornado Watch Tornado Warning* Severe Thunderstorm Watch Severe Thunderstorm Warning* Hurricane Watch Hurricane Warning Tropical Storm Watch Tropical Storm Warning | Flash Flood Watch Flash Flood Warning* Coastal/Flood Watch Coastal/Flood Warning Small Stream Flood Advisory | Blizzard Warning Winter Storm Watch Winter Storm Warning Snow Advisory Freezing Rain Advisory Ice Storm Warning Winter Weather Advisory | High Wind Warning or Advisory |
While that storm cranks across the plains… we are on the mild side of it meaning temps today will be well into the mid and upper 60s then into the lower 70s for Tuesday. Winds will be increasing on Tuesday and that will carry us into Wednesday when that cold front is moving in from the west. This front will bring showers and thunderstorms to the state, but the early morning arrival of the front may help keep the severe weather threat down. Here is what the GFS looks like for Wednedsay…
Wednesday Morning

Wednesday Afternoon

Highs Wednesday will likely be in the 50s. This is where the real battle of the seasons gets underway as a major push of cold air pours into the central states as it eyes the eastern part of the country. The setup with this continues to have the look of a big time rain producer that can also bring some nasty thunderstorms. Here is the setup upstairs from the GFS for this coming Saturday…

That bowling ball of energy will be able to pump warm and moist air in here by later Friday into Saturday that should be able to produce heavy rains along with the chance for some strong thunderstorms. Here is what that setup looks like at the surface…

Those maps are nasty looking with a severe weather outbreak from the Ohio Valley into the south and a possible blizzard raging across the plains again. Will it turn out that way? Stay tuned!
Oh yeah… the whole winter thing isn’t over just yet…
Sunday Evening

That would be enough for some rain and snows to end the weekend and start off the new week!
I will have another update later tonight so be sure to check back. Until then… have a great day and GO BIG BLUE!!!

Tim…do they normally get weather like that?
Hey gang hope everyone is doing well. This is for ANYONE who has an idea..what next week will be like, my kids will be out for Spring Break already! WOW, Just wondering and hoping it will be nice! 🙂
I am in FULL SPRING MODE after working outside all day yesterday. So, I AM NOT liking that last map CB posted. It’s a week away, and we all know what happens to maps that show snow from a week out! 🙂
I was living in Rapid City South Dakota in the mid to late 60’s. As a child, I still remember the big time snows we got there. Snow all the way to the top of the house!! We got to sled from the top of the house to the ground! You talk about fun! And we never missed school.
Afternoon, all. Chris, don’t you be a talkin’ like that! After all this pretty weather, I am not in the mood for snow! (I know, you are not, either.)
I am wondering if the Wednesday shot of rain is going to be a fast mover? Or if we are going to be stuck in heavy rain all day, or a good part of it. Your feeling on this, Chris, and on a ballpark time when it will hit the area you are now in.
I would like to give my husband an idea of travelling weather, if I can.
Right now, it is sunny and 68 here in Somerset. And one beautiful day! We wound up having a lot of clouds Saturday till the afternoon, and then yesterday afternoon as well.
Chris, hang in there. These cool and cold spells will soon pass, and before you know it, we will be wishing for some cool air and rain. Ah, Ky weather!!! Gotta love it!
GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
Got moderated, so I am trying again. Thanks for the update, Chris. Beautiful day out there today!
Winter will make minor comeback before or around Easter, (dogwood winter)but after that, should get better.
GO BIG BLUE!!!!
65* and tornadoes to this blizzard to for some folks wow!
I’m still seeing forecasts with highs near 60 sunday there going to get smoked. both the 12z gfs and euro have the front passed us by 12z with low clouds precip and thickness values 540-546. how do you get near 60? at best i’d say mid 40’s likely upper 30’s and low 40’s for most of us.
We also have Redbud Winter before Dogwood Winter. Of course a few years I’ve noticed they are both blooming at the same time. lol So you could say we get two birds with one stone. And then the final winter is Blackberry winter which is usually just a slight cool down, no big deal usually.
I am always on the search for the latest weather windows and technology. Here is one I have used for some time. If you are really into meterology beyond your backyard you will find this of great interest. http://tornadovideos.net/
I am always on the search for the latest weather windows and technology. Here is one I have used for some time. If you are really into meterology beyond your backyard you will find this of great interest. http://tornadovideos.net/ The title is misleading. It is LIVE in the field storm chasing. If you so choose they will email you anytime they go live.
How ’bout them CATS!!!!! I was proud of them tonight! And Chris, I think that tomorrow’s weather will make us all proud!
Looking for the next update, so that I can get ready to hunker down, or buy a boat! 😉 (Or both) Tim, if there is room in the ark, I may need to give you directions to my house!
Everyone have a good night! check in first thing in the morning!
