10PM UPDATE
Good evening folks. Everything remains on track with the snow that is falling across the southern half of the state. Parts of southern and southeastern Kentucky have already picked up more than 3″ of snow.
Some areas across southeastern Kentucky will likely make a run toward 6″ before all is said and done.
Keep posting your weather information. Thanks a bunch for everything you do for the blog!!!! ![]()
Full update later tonight. Take care.
PREVIOUS DISCUSSION
Good evening everyone. Snow has moved into the state and will continue into early Friday across much of the area. The snow is coming down heavy enough to cause accumulations in a lot of southern and southeastern Kentucky.
A Snow/Winter Weather Advisory is out for much of the southern and southeastern part of the state. Here is a look at the counties included with my snowfall forecast added…
The radar is impressive…
As temps continue to fall below freezing… roads will become slushy so use caution if out traveling tonight and early Friday.
Help me out by posting your weather conditions through the evening and overnight. You can also send me some snow pics at chrisbaileyweather@yahoo.com
I will update things later this evening. Take care.

Light snow in Eubank at 6:06 PM. Light grassy accumulations.
Snow! Snow! Snow! It would almost be perfect except the fact that it’s mid-march and it won’t hang around for long.
Roads are white here in Knox and have been for hr and half
Thanks Chris…already a light dusting on the grass here in Isom (Letcher County)…just heard WYMT’s Jim Caldwell mentioned an inch already in Corbin.
Snow!!! 🙂
Starting to snow here in Jeffersonville. Thanks for the update Chris.
Chris, we currently have a sleet storm in progress, and the snow is starting to mix in , changing over to more and more snow. Temp is down to freezing here at the house. I know the airport says 34, but it has been a little warm since the extreme cold we had about a month ago
Will keep you updated on what happens here.
pushing 1.5 – 2″ already down here and its still coming down very heavy, with occasional sleet mixing in…
As a matter of fact, we probably have about a quarter inch of sleet on the ground here now. And the snow is mixing in very quickly.
i expect that the 1″ will need to be moved farther north and west
Clear and dry here just west and south of Mt Sterling. About 35 degrees.
Still nothing here in Lexington…I’ve seen a stray flake or two over the past hour, but nothing steady. funny….looking at the radar you’d think it would be pouring the snow…
changeover is almosts complete, and it is fogging it down! Deck is covered, and the ground is getting white in a hurry!
I may get the camera out and take a few pics while it is snowing! IF they turn out, I will send them to you, Chris.
Once again Chris served us proud while the NWS dropped the ball like in most cases
keep me updated on school info
Pouring the snow just outside of Pikeville. Grass is almost covered already.
It’s snowing here in East Point, Johnson County…lots of it coming down and it is accumulating…not a lot on the roads as of yet. It will be slick tonight, though. The radar is impressive, CB! No gaps, no little dry pockets, just a complete picture of blue…stretching quite a ways back! The temp here is 34.
Since I don’t trust the models anymore, I waited until today when Chris posted an update to get excited!
there will be no school in this area i’m not sure what the weather looks like in Pike but we are already pushing 2 inches and thats after the brief sleet spell we had
LONDON, and MONTICELLO reporting FREEZING RAIN!!!…YIKES!!..still snowing big flakes here with sleet mixed in…
i made it to houston ok. it has been raining off and on since i got here, and before i got here (ran into it somewhere in LA)
Its about 45 degrees here in NW houston tx right now.
happy for everyone who is getting snow back home in kentucky. wish i was there to enjoy it with y’all , but ill take seeing the inlaws over snow right now, weve not saw them in over a year. i hope everyone stays safe during the snow event. 🙂
Freezing rain/sleet here in berea for about an hour…maybe a little longer. Hoping for a change over soon.
pouring snow
getting alot of nasty ole sleet again down here, its cutting the snowfall totals way back i would say…it goes back and forth from sleet to snow to mix of sleet and snow…I would say the roads are getting VERY BAD!! in alot of areas down here…
Visiting with family in London. Can report everything from freezing reain, sleet, and snow here right now. Everything but the kitchen sink. Some light accumulation on the ground.

Came out of retirement for this one…..love winter blog only….looks like Chris’s false spring forecast held up…..Ackerman was droning this morning about “nothing really to pay any attention too”….I think he was describing his forecasts….wtg Chris!
Moderate snow/down to 30 here now.
i have been searching for my long lost buddy Rolo, Has anyone heard from him?
TIM KEEP YOUR SNOW DOWN THERE 🙂 I dont want you sharing lol
He has a tendency not to show up when he get’s a forecast wrong.
yeah he was on earlier saying the roads wouldn’t get bad LOL they ended up getting bad less than an hr after that i’m sure he is chicken fighting or gambling somewhere
Hope you have a great time! Stay safe and enjoy your family.
cosmo kramer in Morgan wrote:
34* here….had rain then sleet then snow around 3pm….nothing since, but looks as if it could begin anytime….as usual Morgan County is split by Chris’s “likely snow” line and Meck’s accumulation line…amzazing….it’s like Morgan County is the Mason-Dixon line of SNOW, but it’s always a rush!

Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
WEll, Tim, we went to sleet and back to snow, and right now, we are at all snow and at 32 here at the Hargis ranch. Snow is coming down at a pretty good clip right now. We don’t have as much as you, but we have had almost a half inch of sleet, and new we have mostly snow, but sleet is mixing in, too. Have not seen any freezing rain, though.
Dorton-are you thinking what I’m thinking?
Roads are slick (Perry). Wrecks happening every few minutes. I’m listening to the scanner.
virga stinks!
Roads are slick (Perry). Wrecks happening every few minutes. I’m listening to the scanner.
The roads are white now.
Getting white here. BEAUTIFUL! And TBinFKT, no offense, but we WILL take your snow this time! I am always ready to help out a fellow blogger! 😉
I notice others are getting double posts too…..for some reason the posts are delayed or sluggish? Wonder why.
LoL maybe thats why he isn’t around j/k
still getting mix freezing rain/sleet/snow and its compacting what snow we got earlier and it pretty much a MESS right now…
http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=JKL&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1
Coming down hard and heavy here on Lakeville in Magoffin County. We already have about 2 inches in my yard!
I have the scanner on here to and there have been a multitude of wreaks. So many between here and Corbin they can hardly keep up.
Wonder why schools aren’t cancelling yet? I HATE not knowing before I go to bed!!!!! And 9 pm is approaching quickly! lol
i dont understand why its not snowing the atmosphere should be plenty moist. radar has been showing snow all day can anyone tell me? oh im in anderson co.
coffeelady…my snow has turned to freezing rain, and now my yard is a slushy mess…that earlier was a blanket of 2″ of snow…sheesh..I hope it goes back to snow..
So much for no accumulation on the roads. The snow/sleet has really picked up in London and 192 and US 25 are becoming very slushy/slick. Everyone be careful if you have to be out and about.
THANKS!!!!!!
About 1 1/2 inches here at my pad about 3 miles NW of Prestonsburg. Snowing very hard and has been since around 6. By looking at the radar, I think we may exceed the 3 or 4 inches that is forcast. I shoveled my deck and no sooner than I got finished, it was covered again.
Moderate fine flake snow here for about an hour. Everything coated at this point. No sleet.
Really coming down here in Johnson, and it is absolutely beautiful! I think we are going to get the amounts CB mentioned. Do you think it will stay for the weekend?
hey pike:
why don’t they just go ahead and close??? OH WAIT!!! I FORGOT, IT’S THE PIKE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION!!!!!!!
throw some to anderson co. nothing here but im sure it will start soon!
Snowing lightly here in Winchester. Grass is beginning to show some thin snow cover. Roads are just wet at the moment.
I don’t know why NO ONE has closed….except Wabaco. What are all these schools waiting for? The sun to come out tonight and melt it?
Snow has been coming down here in lexington for the last hour.
It is coming down hard and its sticking…..
I’m not only thinking it,
i am believing it! The roads are even covered here.
or the rain to wash it away as thats what its doing in Knox atm 🙁
its not supposed to rain here. they just changed it.
Snowing pretty good in Lexington now. Laying on the grass, but not the roads.
Finally home! I can report that we’ve picked up a little over a half inch of snow/sleet in East Bernstadt. Snow is still coming down at a fairly good clip, sleet still mixing in at times.
funny soon as they changed it for us to get some accumulation it started raining 🙁 this is the only school called off so far in this area CALVARY CHRISTIAN-BARBOURVILLE: Closed Friday
well its a good thing my kids went out to play this evening, becuase if something dont change, all the heavy rain we are getting now is gonna wash our 2″ of snow away, which has become a huge slushy mess…so sad…I thought for sure we were gonna get one good snow before spring but looks like as of now…WAA is winning the battle in my back yard…:(
Tim, I am actually hoping at this point that the rain makes it here. My youngest son has a field trip to Lexington tomorrow to see Disney on Ice. He’s SOOOO excited about it. If school gets canceled, he, of course, won’t get to go and the ticket is non-refundable. Send that rain on this way!! The snow/sleet has been pretty to look at but not at the expense of an unhappy child. 🙁
It’s snowing here in Corbin again after a period of freezing rain. I was in town picking my daughter up from soccer practice at 8:00 and the streets are terrible already. I can’t imagine that there will be school tomorrow unless by some slight chance it warms up over night and just rains!
Heavy Snow in my back yard 7miles east of Somerset on HWY 80. I’ve got close to 2″ of snow and sleet. This will more than likely be our biggest snowfall of the year.
thats all its doing at my house is raining atm if it does this all nite most if not all the snow should wash away
Starting to change over back to sleet now in my back yard
lol. im waiting to go run until we get a heavy snow going
Thank goodness……you had me nervous! Don’t want that rain gettin’ up here!!!!!
It’s pouring the snow here now! I guess it just depends on where you are. When it seemed like it was “just raining” here earlier, it was freezing rain. The roads weren’t bad at all until then. But, I live in town in Corbin and we have a good 2+ inches even with the freezing rain earlier. Keep on snowin!!!!!:)
MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW on hoss creek on 80 in manchester, 2 inches on ground.
29 degrees. it keeops this up 6 plus not out possibility. MAN IT SNOWWING AS HARD AS IVE SEEN IN A LONG TUIME.
ICE STORM WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR NORTH CENTRAL TN…along the ky. border…i was afraid of that…its been freezing rain/sleet/snow here for a couple hrs. now…O.K. WHERE DID SPRING GO!!!!
lincoln, I don’t understand why you’re not seeing any snow??! You sure you’re lookin’ out the right window??! lol
I’m in Nelson Co. and it started snowing here around 5:30 or so, and has picked up pretty good the past hour..so far, my guestimate is a litle over an inch, inch & quarter!:)
I hope Marilee makes back to Pineville ok
closin in on 3 inches here. and it HEAVY RIGHT NOW.
well if you lived in Knox you would stay nervous as its just a mix now sleet and rain
if that southern disturbance would hook up with this one, WOW is all i can say.
We had a couple of hours of freezing rain and now it’s back to snow! And it’s BIG flakes now. Coming down pretty hard here on the west side of Laurel County. Come on Snow!!!!!
Tim, I hope yours goes back to snow too.
clay ounty school out.
POURING BUCKETS!!! And I’m not talking about rain 🙂 Just checked out the radar and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna end any time soon. I’m goin outside to measure the snow with a ruler! I’ll be right back!
snow now picking up in versailles very hvy band of snow will track NE along the bluegrass pkwy from e-town to lexington through 11pm.
All snow now here in East Bernstadt. Big, fat, fluffy flakes flying. Roads are completely covered. I haven’t been out to measure how much has fallen since my last update, but it looks to be around 1.5″ now.
Can somebody from Morehead tell me what it’s doing there?
yea, and it’s not very far from monticello & somerset
Coming down like that here in East Bernstadt now as well.
Looks like we’re in the sweet spot for once.
Exactly 3 inches so far!:) I can’t believe that the best snow we are gonna get this winter is the one that nobody made any kind of big deal over. Oh well, I’m just glad we’re finally getting a good one! After this I’m ready for Spring!:)
winter weather adv extended nw into lex metro in antcipation of snow band over e-town moving NE.

as I told lincoln, we’ve had snow here in NelsonCo/Bardstown since 5:30 and it’s REALLY been coming down the past hour or so. 2″+ on my deck right now, but so far,the streets are just wet @31 degrees.
3″ here 7miles NE of Somerset in my back yard…its still pouring snow. This is the hardest its snowed at my house all year. Where was this in Jan and Feb? Im lovin it!
pouring the snow here in lincoln co. and temp is 28 now. everything is white
31.3 degrees and falling here in Anderson County. Light snow.
I’m SO ready for t-storms and 70s…
It’s about time you got some snow!! 🙂
Ground is covered here in Ravenna and roads are still just wet. Snowing steady and sticking to everything. It is beautiful!
Hi,
I’m posting from Prestonsburg, and it’s 9:45 p.m. We have about 2 inches here at my home in Prestonsburg. Right now, the snow is coming down pretty good in a fine powder. It’s great snow for a snowball fight!

TIM….is it still freezing rain over your way?
It looks like about 2.5 inches on my back porch and it’s still coming down.
(Just north of Hazard).
Wow, it looks beautiful. I’m still in shock. We had seventies and I used the air conditioner a couple of days ago, and now it’s snowing like crazy. 🙂

Tim, my parents live in Williamsburg and they have nothing but sleet and freezing rain. I hate that you are not getting this snow.): Check the radar out though, this is not ending any time soon! Maybe you’ll get in on it before too long!
YES!!!…with sleet…so disgusting..:(
*PIKE COUNTY KY CLOSED
2.5 inches in North Corbin and coming down hard.
Right at 2 inches here or so, I’m not going out to measure, it is still pouring, if it keeps this up throughout the night, we could get quite a bit.
yep, we’re getting a pounding right now-reminiscent of Jan. 16, ’94, in fact!:)..Now,if I can just kick that urge to walk outside(broke my collarbone during the ice storm-OW!)…
Our power just went out. Running off of generator right now.
where at?
temp keeps going up and down 1 or 2 degrees causing it to be either sleet or snow….blah. past 3 hours should of been snow instead of all this stupid sleet.
Tim you wreckin they’ll have school in whitley or knox co?
Got just over an inch here in SE Lexington on my deck and coming down good now.
2.5-3″ here in East Bernstadt. Snow still coming down.
Its a joke since they are waiting to call off…
We have about 2″ or so of snow here in London. Still snowing moderately heavy and the roads appear to be covered. It looks like the back edge of the snow is still well west of Bowling Green, so I’m thinking we may have several more hours of moderate to heavy snow. We should end up with 3-4″ of snow before this thing ends, maybe a few folks will pick up 5″ or so.
.8 inches now in versailles ground is white roads are wet.
mitch i dont have squat! in snow though it is snowing hard now but its accumulating now to even roads but not much on grass looks like cut off like was east anderson co.
yall are talking all these inches you aint got nothing on me!!!! im proud of my damn dusting!!!! oh yeah thats right i got me a dusting cant beat that!!!!
That’s my thinking as well, Russ. I think 4-6″ in a few areas is not out of the question.
Just went out to get a measurement–3 to 4 inches depending on where I measured. I can’t believe schools are still waiting to cancel for tomorrow. What a joke.
Mitch,
What do you think the road conditions will be like in Woodford/Fayette area by morning?
wet but with areas of black ice on untreated roads.
could even go 8 in chris’s locally higher zone as the hvy precip based on radar continues.
Little over 2 inches in Northern Lawrence County. Still looking at bare ground and some flurries in Wayne Co, WV where the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers become one.
Over 3 inches on the ground here 3 miles NW of Prestonsburg. Definitely our biggest snow of the year. Kinda sad to think about actually. Still coming down extremely hard.
Chris, we currently have 3+ inches of snow and it is still absolutely pouring here! Just looked at the radar, and it looks like we are going to be seeing snow for a while yet! Temp is still at 32 degrees here. And for the first time this year……THE GRASS IS COVERED!!!
Tim, our sleet was on the front end, I think, because we have not seen freezing rain. It has been all sleet and snow. And the snow is absolutely beautiful! Going to try to take some pictures to send to you, Chris, so you will believe me. This is, without a doubt, the biggest snow we have had all winter!
Michael, how much you got out east there? Looks like the radar is going to be good to both of us this time!
Well, it is almost bedtime, so I am going to see about some pics, and get ready for bed.
Looks to be better than 2″ on the ground here in South Jessamine, and still snowing at a pretty good clip. The roads are starting to freeze up in spots, though still mostly wet. This is nothing short of amazing given the fact that it was near 80 just two days ago!
Here in Berea……I just let the dog out and I may be wrong but it looks to me like just about 2 inches. It is POURING the snow in big beautiful flakes. Wishing this happened when it would have layed on the ground a little longer and Im hoping to see 4 inches in the morning….Whats the possibility??
4″ in corbin, I live 12 miles south of corbin and its been raining since 7pm, and my 2″ I had up to that point is a compacted 1″ of slush now….I JUST CANT FIGURE THIS ONE OUT!!!!
Thought I’d get in one last update before bed…
We have a good, solid 3″ of snow here in East Bernstadt. We did have some sleet mix back in for about 15 minutes, but looks to be all snow again.
Since Laurel Co has yet to call school off, looks like I’ll be up at 6am to give another update on snow totals.
G’night folks! Enjoy the snow!! 🙂
Currently have 3 inches and still snowing in Johnson County! The roads are covered and it looks so pretty everywhere. Tim, I hope you get the snow back. Didn’t CB mention that it might change over and then go back to all snow down your way?
Chris I just sent you some pics we have at least 3 inches of snow in Pikeville and still falling!!!!!! Temp 34.We just got in from logan WV man it was bad over there between Logan and before you get to Williamson white out conditions in places we could not see the mountains at time dangerous slick!!!! Also FYI at Pike cental high school mountain on Buckleys creek very dangerous and snow covered roads. So when we got to home in Pikeville I was so thankful,i have a bad cold and my hubby dared me out so you know me he went to sleep and i snuck out i was bundled up and took some good pics.Chris again you nailed it heavy wet snow,I dont know what we would do without you.
I know it’s hard for some to believe that we’re getting snow after just being in the 80’s two days ago. However, I remember back in the late 80’s possible 86 or 87 in April we were in the 80’s on a Sunday and had over 16 inches of snow on Monday.
well it appears that im gonna have rain right up to the end….:(..
everyone enjoy your snow, I probably wont have any by morning, the rain is washing it away…
I live in Johnson county on RT 825, Just went out side and measured 4 inches on the nose in on my back deck at 11:40.
Power is back on.
I must be in the sweet spot now, pouring big flakes of snow. Around 4~ inches on the ground.
It is Snowing hard here in Letcher Co in the country of Mcroberts.
Sleeting here at my house in P-burg now. Just a little over 3 inches here. Hoping it turns back to all snow before this system pulls out of the area.
WHAT A HUGE,HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT FROM MY AREA DOWN INTO BELL CO…2″ on the front end, then RAIN,RAIN,RAIN…SINCE AROUND 7pm…BLAH!!!!…Now im going back into spring mode….for sure!!!
still snowing here, and i’m loving it the rds and everything is covered !!! so be careful out there.
Ended up with 3.5″ of snow here 7 Miles NE of Somerset. The sleet and freezing drizzle cut the totals down as of 12AM. Still this is the biggest snowfall of the year down here. Its a very wet snow. Now since we’ve had a “HUGE SNOW” I’m ready to move onto spring!
Snowing now here. It just started alil bit ago, coming down pretty good, can’t tell if its covering the roads.
Still coming down in Pikeville it feels like Christmas morning weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee just measured 4 inches on my car!!!! I know it will end soon and turn to yuck but it was so very beautiful like Chris said it would.i am a happy camper now.I wish all had got the snow what about you Andy or Marsha or Rhonda and pike?
now thats not so cool tim. we wanted snow all winter, and when you finally get into spring mode, mother nature teases you with some snow, then you get rain.
anyone know if its raining or snowing, or still mix in northern clay county?
my forcast for where i am (houston tx)
Overnight: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 42. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Friday: Rain. High near 49. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
Friday Night: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 41. North wind around 10 mph.
Saturday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 54. North wind around 10 mph.
Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. North wind around 5 mph
Just getting ready to head off to bed. Measured 3 3/4″ of snow here 7 Miles east of Somerset. Biggest snow of the winter season down here. If the sleet and frz rain hadn’t mixed in..we would have had 5″ easy…. oh well… I’ll take it. Now its time for Spring “hey Whitey. Where’s your hat?”
Looks like most things came together with timing pretty well this evening. 🙂
Around 2″ of snow in grassy areas here in Garrard. 52/1295 highways are slushy and even snow covered in a few spots. Not terribly dangerous, but you will want to be careful on the roads. The slick spots can drag you off in a hurry if you hit ’em the wrong way.
Ended up with 2.5-3″ at Herrington Lake in Boyle County and about that where I went in Mercer County tonight.
Despite some higher reports the average looks to be like the NWS predicted at the last minute of 1-3 across the majority of the region. I must admit my expectation was generally around 1″ some 24 hours ago. Thats not so far fetched when your outlooking prior to the event and not during so I still trust the ole F5 data. Chris by far had the best call 24 hours ago by just predicting accumulating snow without amounts. These near spring systems can surprise ya a little.
Luckily all roads I traveled on were mostly clear with a little slush on side roads and 30* air temp.
