Good Tuesday to one and all. This is one heck of a cold air outbreak across the eastern half of the country and that includes right here in good old Kentucky. Temps with full sunshine and a bare ground could not get out of the 20s Monday and that is very hard to do around here, my friends!
The cold air will be with us again today and the air this morning is something to behold as many areas should be able to see single digit lows. Here are your temp tracking maps from Kentucky Mesonet…
Current Temps
Today’s Low
If we can manage to hit single digits… this will mark the 4th straight month we have had temps that low! Spin it however you want… but that is an impressive stat and is one of many that shows the pattern since October has been a cold one overall. I know many areas have not had the snowfall you wanted… but a lot of areas have had plenty this winter. Here is another stat… the light snow in some areas of the past few days mean that we have now had snow falling in 6 straight months across the state! Can we get some flakes in April to go for lucky number 7? Hmmm?!! ![]()
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves… let’s talk about the next few weeks as it’s a pattern that says we have not seen the last of winter by any means. As I have mentioned… I am in full spring mode so I am not too happy with the pattern ahead of us.
In the short term it looks better by the middle and end of the week. Here is your breakdown…
1. Temps today will only warm to the upper 20s and low 30s under mainly sunny skies. Normal highs are in the low 50s and normal lows are in the low 30s!![]()
2. Wednesday will see temps begin to warm closer to normal with everyone hitting the 40s with a few 50s sneaking in to our west.
3. Thermometers will warm toward 60 by the end of the week into the start of the weekend. But this mild up will likely come with some clouds and showers.
4. The model battle for the weekend is interesting with the GFS keeping us mild and the European Model going frigid for a day on Sunday. I will split the difference here because the new Canadian model is trending milder. Either way… it looks like this pattern will bring several rain and thunderstorm chances to us this weekend into early next week.
5. All signs continue to point strongly toward this being a false start on spring. Later next week into the middle of the month will likely see the cold returning to much of the country. This could be some big time cold as well and may produce some more snow systems across much of the eastern half of the country. Since many of us are ready for spring… the snow zone will probably set up on top of us.
That would be our luck! haha Check out these cold looking maps…
March 13th
March 16th
March 18th
Brrrr! As I have been pointing out for several weeks now… a true, early spring just ain’t happening this year, folks! ![]()
I would like to know how low you go today…
Not the Chubby Checker way either… tell me how low your thermometers go instead. But, if you want to do a little limbo action… far be it from me to stop you. It is the dance craze that’s sweeping the country!!! ![]()
Have a great Tuesday and stay warm.
Take care.

10.7 so far prob be lower than that by the time daylight hits
6.5* in eastern Rowan County. Brrrrr!!!
Wow — only 2 comments so far?!?! It must be cold out there — everyone’s still in bed under the electric blanket! It’s 15 degrees here in the holler, with a thin layer of ice-dew.
9.7 at 7 am now where is rolo or WXMAN to tell me i’m wrong 😉
Here on the west side of Frankfort 1 mile south of I-64, 4 mles east of the Shelby/Franklin County line and about 2 miles north of the Anderson/Franklin County line it is 8.6 degrees at 7:05.
7:15…..8.9* in my back yard!!…What a wasted cold spell, all this cold and no snowcover..Now its gonna warm into the 60’s possibily by the weeks end and we’ll all be in full spring mode…then WHAP!! the big smack in the face cold sets in again!!…if its gonna be bone chilling cold it might as well snow!!.. if its gonna be warm lets get on with spring…but oh ky. weather its never that simple….ALWAYS complicated, and aggrevating…lol…
everyone have a great day and stay warm!
Got 9°F here this morning.
Also, when was the last time Spring really started here in March? It’s always toward the end of April before it gets warm and stays warm. And our biggest snowstorms are always in March it seems.
Also, apparently I was wrong yesterday. I’ve always been taught, and have heard Chris and others say too, that the models are programmed with some bias toward season. In other words, IF you had an arctic outbreak in June, it wouldn’t get handled well because the models are then working on a “Summer” program. I’ve even seen the NWS employees talk about this in AFDs. So that was the assumption I worked on. Apparently I was wrong and the GFS processes data the same way in January that it does in July.
In Morehead this morning the temp was 9 degrees…Ridiculous…
Well I am the hot spot I guess with 12 degrees in Pikeville lol!
It was 7 at the Johnson/Floyd line on rt 1750. Brrrrr!
So how’s this for irony: Fayette County got 18″ of snow out of this last system…Fayette County, Tennessee that is!
It is cold.
I decided to start running yesterday!
I may skip today and start back Wednesday.
I cant help but to still want snow though but Im ready for spring if it is coming.
Everyone have a great day!
6.2 in Northern Lawrence County.
Already up to 14 now. Raised 7.8 degree’s in just over an hour and a half. To bad it won’t continue we could be in the mid 40’s by afternoon.
About the seasonal bias in modeling..what is really crazy is that the models are LESS accurate in Summer. Seems odd, doesn’t it?

Wxman I always like everyones opinion about the weather, and i don’t know how old you are but you seem to always no matter what anyone says have a different opinion even if they are right just so you don’t have to agree with them. If I said March is below normal to this point you would probably say no its not except for the fact i am pointing it out that its not(this may be the one time you would agree)
Come on man get up and admit when your wrong dont be a wimp, real men admit when they are wrong. I’m sure your a great person so get over yourself and be everyones friend. Sorry for venting on you but just tryin to help ya bud
This cold and no snow stinks!
And what, exactly, does this have to do with what I posted? Nothing?
Also, I posted hours ago that I was wrong from something I posted yesterday…but it’s stuck in moderation until Chris releases it. If everyone is allowed to have an opinion, why doesn’t mine count?
And while I’m thinking about it, if I am talking about anything on here, you’ll notice I post numbers to back it up. If you said March is below normal right now, you would be correct. I back up what I say with facts so that people can’t argue that I’m just trying to argue. 🙂 We are actually 11.5°F below normal so far in FFT.
actually according to the beloved NWS we are 16.5 below normal ;)that is a fact
i Should clarify myself we are that much below normal for the month of March
i would think it’s the other way around intresting.
infromational video on the change in severe hail criteria the same one i posted last night

Thanks MJ for you post clarifying whether or not the models know what season it is.
Yup. 🙂 Depends on where you live.
Yes, thanks for the clarification. Not sure who that other forecaster at LMK was that kept talking about the seasonal changes with the GFS, but I heard Chris talk about it last year too so apparently there were quite a few people duped on that one! 🙂 Thanks. We do know the models behave diff. in diff. seasons, but now we know it’s not programming.
I know, less change in our pattern in Summer…you would think the models would be all over that. It’s odd that they have the most trouble in Summer.
So your blaming the fact you were wrong about Models knowing what season it is on Chris?
Is that what I said? Nope. Read.
Many people had that understanding about the models, including a NWS employee, so all I’m saying is thanks MJ for clearing that up because a lot of folks were told wrong on that.
Glad to see they are finally implementing this. LMK’s new warning coordination met. was in town a couple years ago, and I brought up the talk about the 1″ criteria at a SKYWARN class he was teaching, and he literally threw me a quarter. 🙂 It was funny. But this has been in the works for a long time. I hope it goes national.
I agree 100% with Wendy
exactly so We aren’t 11.5 You are 😉 I’m sure there are others colder than my area for normal
LOL NEIL
Yeah REALLY! It wasn’t widespread though. It was isolated. It still stinks though. However, I don’t feel like we have been in a snow drought this winter here. Just no HUGE storms.
I Tivo’d Good Morning America this morning and they were talking about the ice caps melting. Based on what I have read and heard from other sources they are growing, not melting. I wonder why all the different information?
Andy why are you always trying to start arguments with certain people on here, WXman and Rolo come to mind immediately?
well…you should already know the answer to that one…its obvious that CERTAIN media outlets are GLOBAL WARMING ALL THE WAY….its sad…wouldnt matter if it were JUNE 1st with 10″ of snow on the ground in TAMPA FL. and a temp. of 21* …it would be GLOBAL WARMING…
i heard the same thing about them growing as well and thought they had a formula figured out to show how much they had growed but dun remember where i seen it
Maybe you should read your earlier post…anyways dig dig dig the more you talk the dumber you look
http://www.icecap.us
some good stuff there
GREENUP CO. SCHOOLS CLOSED WED, THUR, & FRI DUE TO ILLNESS.
Its getting bad in Knox to dunno if they will cancel school or not but my oldest was down and now my nephew is down to
not to my knowledge last season there was ice growth in the arctic. some of you will get a laugh that there was a outdoor global warming rally monday in DC during the snowstorm and cold. the reason why global warming may be on hold is that we’re in a cold PDO. we’ll have to wait and see what happens when it flips back to warm to see just how the concept of global warming will play out.
Global warming is a big money scam. People are getting filthy rich with this idea. They really have no solid data to back up their claims, but they continue to throw money at it. Water vapor is doing much more to the atmosphere(not that it hurts) than any man made cause. How are they going to stop that?
WXMAN, thanks for offering your opinions on the weather. You obviously know more than 99% of the guys and gals that post on this site and your insight is much appreciated.
If you only had a goat.
well if you ask me 150 years of weather records is wayyy to short to establish a total dooms day party. apparently though in al gores lifetime it has gotten warmer!!! lol
I agree. The last thing we need to do is run off a professional weather person on this site. Chris usually gives 2 updates on a good day, and I enjoy reading the thoughts of others that (truly) can decipher the data while waiting on another post from Chris. You may not agree with these people always, but it’s nice to get an educated update in between.
New Hail Size Criterion for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Begins April 1
Beginning at 12 AM EDT, April 1, the hail size criterion for severe thunderstorm warnings in counties served by the Paducah, Louisville and Jackson, Kentucky National Weather Service Offices will change from three-quarter inch diameter to one inch diameter.
Beginning April 1 the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Jackson Kentucky will issue severe thunderstorm warnings for storms expected to produce hail one inch in diameter or larger, and/or damaging winds of 58 mph or greater. Special Weather Statements will be issued for storms producing hail from around one-half inch in diameter to less than one inch in diameter. Local Storm Reports will continue to be issued for hail of three-quarter of an inch in diameter or larger.
The National Weather Service Central Region has conducted a demonstration in the state of Kansas and adjoining County Warning Areas over the past 4 years, utilizing a hail size criterion for issuance of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings of one inch in diameter, rather than the historical three quarter inch threshold. This experiment was based on feedback from local partners, as well as scientific research conducted by Texas Tech University which demonstrated that significant property damage does not occur until hailstone sizes reach 1 inch in diameter. Central Region, along with the NWS Office of Climate, Weather and Water Services, is now taking steps to expand the demonstration area to encompass all Central Region weather offices.
In the Kansas demonstration area customers have indicated high satisfaction with the adoption of the 1 inch hail criterion. Media partners said warnings are more meaningful because the public knows there is a genuine risk of damage when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued. Emergency managers agree warnings carry more weight and credibility.
If you have questions or need additional information please contact Meteorologist-in-Charge Shawn Harley at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Jackson. Phone is 666-8000
As always…I’m happy to see WXman, Shane, and MJ, throwing in their input on the blog(s)!:)Rather than bashing them, or putting in “your 2 cents’ worth”(amounts to nothing..), you should be GLAD that they choose to participate and SHARE their knowledge w/ you!? Even if they’re right or wrong about any one specific thing, I have LEARNED SOMETHING from it in one way or another?!:)I only hope that none of them stop posting their thoughts and opinions because of derogatory remarks made against them.:)
Come on Andy /Jonathan?? all i could see there is Wxman sharing some info about models and the differences when seasons change. I have noticed he has been a voice of reason and certainly is more educated and had a career in the weather world! If you really go back and look at it he nailed the ice storm 2 days out, when it was nothing but a snow storm talk here… not to mention the 1-2 day heads up on the severe t-storms. we all want to hear about the big snows, but the lower half has just not had that, and i feel he has been very accurate in his forecasts!
I’m not a supporter of Gore’s claims, but did they rally out in Texas when they were nearing 100, or in Calfirnia or Australia when they were scorching? lol
I am SO tired of Andy and his negativity all the time. Grow up man. We all get on here for an enjoyably pastime. I enjoy ALL the different perspectives on the weather. No reason for someone to criticize another’s weather opinion all the time like you do man. Chill out.
I agree with you and I am a fan of this blog all the way…..I love the diversity, and I apologize if I hurt any feelings, I just think its right to admit when you are wrong. I personally like the snow and hate the less than 4 inches we have had all winter in my yard. Wxman whoever you may be forgive me if I ruffled your feathers. I do enjoy your opinion, even when most of the time its different than the majority here. Keep Posting bro
I agree with Debbie 1000% Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Talk about extremes…I just caught tomorrows stats for the jkl area..record hi..82*..record lo..2*…so this time of yr. you can be basking in the sun one day, and shoveling snow the next..lol..wait a minute, thats just about possible all winter long in ky. isnt it?…lol…
I think there are a lot of people tired of Andy and his sarcastic and argumentative know it all attitude.
Andy isn’t very well liked IRL either.
hey people just back from washington d.c. they got 8in. of snow i was under the impression it snowed more there than here boy was wrong!!! they were freaking out about all the snow
