Good Sunday folks and thanks for all the hard work each of you put in blogging with me over the past few days. I appreciate the effort you guys give the blog as always! My efforts of late didn’t pay off very much in terms of getting this one right. The nose of warm air just above the surface did me in by causing sleet and freezing rain instead of snow.
Some area still managed to pick up some light accumulation of snow… but anytime you are dealing with sleet… it’s hard to get much snow in this situation. It has ticked me off a bit because I have otherwise had a very good winter of forecasting. But… this is the nature of the beast and I knew what I was getting into when I went into this business. ![]()
That said… I am a fighter so it’s on to the forecast we go!
Snow showers will wind down early today… especially across the south. You can track these wimps on radar…
Roads will be slick in many areas early today so keep that in mind
Let’s look ahead with the weather headlines…
1. I am ready for spring!
2. Temps will run well below normal through Tuesday. Highs the next few days may not crack the freezing mark and lows should hit the teens on at least one morning.
3. I am liking what I am seeing for the end of next week as we may actually see some warm temps in here. 60s are a strong possibility by Thursday and Friday. We will have to watch for a shower chance during this time as well.
4. That same warmer air should come just ahead of a strong cold front that can bring thunderstorms to us by the weekend.
5. The pattern is ripe for early season severe weather! We have already had 3 severe weather events over the past 3 weeks and the atmosphere is likely telling us it’s ready to rock and roll this spring.
6. March will be windy! Now there is some Breaking News for you! ![]()
7. I think the warmth for next week and next weekend is a false start to spring!
8. While we are watching our flurries…. the deep south will get hammered today by heavy wet snow. Areas like Atlanta toward the Carolina beaches will likely see snow and maybe a lot of it. That will then head toward the big cities of the northeast.
9. Have I mentioned I am ready for spring?!!! ![]()
Have a great Sunday and I will update as needed. Take care.

I agree come on spring. My feeling for the winter turned out to be right on and my feeling for spring we are going to see a very active severe weather this spring.
Morgan County…a disappointed winter=watcher, a disappointed CATS fan, and a disappointing 1/2″ of powdery snow….’course you know all about that Chris, especially since you’re next door in Magoffin tonight.
Is the event for Sunday night/Monday morning off your radar now too? “Flakes in Florida….”
HH BAILEY U NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT BLEW THIS FORCAST.
TRAVIS FORD CMON DOWN UR THER NEXT UK COACH BUDDY.
shane PAUL HARVEY SHOW notr going anywhere.
hisson been doing in anyway for most part lately, and fred thompson might still take over as well.
Winter is over for me and these occasional warm days really tease me for spring. I was still up for a big wet snow, but it just wasn’t in the cards for us. Oh well, I’ll be ready to watch for snow next year!

come on spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no snow near belfry.
Thanks Chris…Winter Weather Advisory just been canceled by NWS Jackson.
The busted forecast doesn’t bother me at all. I’m planning my herb garden and waiting for Derby Day. 🙂
Spring in Kentucky is beautiful.
Keeneland is just around the corner.
Chris, can you make your forecast of a windy March be wrong? Please!
wonder why? Never seen a forecast missed so badly but EVERYBODY and rolo you can’t say you told us so cause you changed your mind so many times lol
Congrats WXMAN on having a warmer than normal Feb ended up being 1 degree above normal glad you got one right 😉
What a gyp! Another non-event for us, and places that shouldn’t get snow are getting plastered! 11 years and counting with no major snowstorm here. Truly PATHETIC! Bring on spring and if this is what is gonna pass for winter, don’t ever bring it back!
kinda depressing this morning i was hoping for at least one good snow to send us into spring oh well maybe next year. funny we’ve been making that statement for yrs. now…I’M READY FOR SPRING!!..minus the severe weather. I dont wanna hear FALSE SPRING..more like spring full speed ahead…
alot of reports out of west tn. showing anywhere from 4-10+ inches of snow on the ground this morning…WRONG!! JUST WRONG IN EVERYWAY!!!!
Why should the beaches get all the fun! That used to be all we had was snow and now we don’t have that either…..bring on spring.
DO YOU REALLY WANNA CRY!! TWC…reporting parts of NW TN. has over a foot of snow on the ground with winds gusting to 30mph…snow drifts being reported of a foot and a half with higher drifts in spots…ooohh me!!
…………………..
we had a small bout of snow sometime during the night, got a sugar coating on the porches and cars, VERY LITTLE on the grass.
we had a small bout of snow sometime during the night, got a sugar coating on the porches and cars, VERY LITTLE on the grass.
we had a small bout of snow sometime during the night, got a sugar coating on the cars, porches, and very little on the grass…
well, snow over a foot, snow drifts, and windchills…hmmm not something you would expect to see in WEST TN !!..one report near Jackson Tn. 12.5″, 10″ report around murfreesboro…amazing…
HMM!!!…the last couple of radar loops, is showing moisture trying to work back over the mnts. into s.e. ky. and east tn…
Last week we thought the GFS was CRAZY for saying it was gonna snow in FLORIDA…well its a smack in the face this morning as snow (at least on radar) has made it all the way to the AL./FL. border this morning…MADNESS…PURE MADNESS..
rolo you said we would get nothing so I guess you got this one correct.. Here in Morehead a little sleet thats is about it.
My opinion on the next UK coach I think it will be the guy from Tates Creek who is now coaching at South Carolina:
Darrin Horn
It’s because we have “mountain dew mouth” isn’t it? We’re sooo poor we can’t even get a decent snow around here. lol
Do you have any ice down there?
Good morning all. Glad to see that we are all in the same boat this morning. We have a slick deck this morning, and white rooftops. And most of that is sleet.
Chris, don’t feel bad about missing this one. Everyone did, I think. You are spot on 99% of the time. So your odds are pretty darn good!
Now, if you could miss one about severe weather and lots of wind, that would be alright with me! When you talk about false spring, I hope you are not saying that it stays warm long enough for things to bud out, and then get killed by a freeze.
Have to tell you though, as I said the other day, it would have been nice to see a good snow, but I really did not expect it, so I am not disappointed. Such is the way our winter has been for a long time, so I say “say la vie!”
Today is the official meteorlogical start to spring, so bring it on!
GO figure. Alabama has snow all the way down to Dothan which is only about 70 miles from the Gulf. All we can get is sleet and freezing rain. I give up. Bring on Spring.
very little, had some drizzle and snowshowers last night, temp. this morning was around 29*
I have been taking Spanish lessons from the Joe Johnson El Spanish el learno systemo.
In spanish I think the proper way to call this forecast is:
El busto de forecasto.
Just a little Bob and Tom show humor.
WXMAN I believe you got another one right. That also can go along with above average tenmp for Feb.
Knott,Perry,Leslie counties look to be getting a good snowshower right now.
hmm… I was having those same thoughts the other day as well…. he’s a pretty impressive coach, young too only 37 yrs old..
man check radar out, we are so close, look at that wrap around in east tenn.
rolo also said we were gonna get thumped lol
Spring cannot get here quick enough. This was one of the all-time biggest bust for a forecast. Every outlet was predicting decent snows for my area (Knox) and we get nothing. I’m ready to hit the golf ball, put on the shorts, and enjoy the outdoors. Less than 5 inches total for snow on the year in a predicted big winter season. Bring on the warm and let it stay for a long, long, time.
We just had a good snow shower in Corbin. Gone now though.
Very light snow falling now in Knox County
CB, I hate it when you throw in the towel because I’m like a balloon without air. You’ve done a great job at forecasting, and we did get a little snow. We didn’t need to miss anymore school, anyway.
Rolo, I guess we have to say today’s song is “Another One Bites the Dust”
When you predict December will be above average and it’s not, then you predict January will be above average and it’s not, then you predict February will be above average and it is…. that’s not getting it right.
Chances the surge of moisture in western NC and north GA can make it over the mountains, and how far???
Geez, I’ve been calling for spring for about 4 weeks now… lol
Looks like we could have some nice “fishing” weather next weekend..!
Look out catfish, here I come..!!!
…
March in like a lamb go out like a lion for us. Hope everyone stays safe could be a stormy month.
man rhonda that a good one.lol
just look how close we was. DAMN!!! 150 miles…
man we just couldnt get the NW TREND, every storm trend west, this one never 48 hours out it showed up the same on models.
got a quick burst up here on 80 to whiten the trees a tad and roofs.
I know, Rolo, I hate to look at it, but am trying to look on the bright side of things. Winter isn’t over yet, though…one may sneak up on us.
As of today, I officially am through with Winter. Bring on sunshine, 80+ degrees, flip flops, fishing, and hurricane season!
agree there will be another chande or 2 just like this system before march is over.
Snowing here!
If you predict that every month will be above average, chances are that you’ll hit one every now and then…lol
Plus, getting on this blog and saying over and over again that this month or that month was 0.3º above average is reaching… If it’s that close, then it’s AVERAGE… IMO
But, maybe methodologically speaking, 0.3º is that big a deal, I don’t know…
…
You go girl..!!!
I’m with 100%..! hehehe
oh yea, rumor has it that this is NOT a pro-UK site, so you can pimp your ‘heels here Chas..!!
…
Well, I don’t know if winter is over, but I sure do HOPE it’s over..!
Come on Rolo, we have some horse racing, goat chasin’ and catfish catchin’ to do… COME ON SPRING..!
…
Did I mention how glad I am that Atlanta is getting hammered and We’re not?
Some thoughts this morning;
~Never under estimate the moisture eating Northeast wind(down sloping, compressing=drying)-it kept us very dry here all last year. Has anyone ever saw a full day of heavy virga, nothing reaching the ground?
~Weather forecasting is NOT an exact science. This storm was 2 systems pinwheeling counter-clockwise, connected by another piece of energy, fighting the jet stream. Can anyone remember the toys we played with as children called “Tops”? Remember what happened when they hit together? They flew away from each other in unpredictable manner-like these 2 low pressure systems. The radar showed the rain/snow/sleet moving in ALL directions.
~Why am I rambling? It’s because I want to say to our weather dude GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! Sometimes is nearly impossible to get a bead on what mother nature is up to. I think that keeps us humble, though.
~ Would it not be BORING, if all we had were the “conventional” forecast outlets?
~By the way be sure and do not brag on Galloway and Miller, helping our cats look respectable even though we lost- If BG gets wind of it, he won’t play them the next game.
~I know this is a long post, but what else are we going to do this morning? I can’t get down my handicapped ramp to get out to church, we do have a pretty good crust of ice here in Northern Morgan.
~Did I mention how glad I was that Atlanta was getting hammered and not us?
OK OK, I did, personally, I’m ready to get the fishing tackle out. Is been a long hard winter….
What’s to pimp, aside from a 25-3 record? LOL 😉
Oh Chris I will never agree that you was wrong I don’t know about the other bloggers but I have 6 inches of snow on the ground just like you said… I’m kidding…. But I still want agree that you was wrong.
Well, we can’t really be disappointed because Chris did state it would be an hour by hour ordeal, not a set in stone winter storm. With that said, bring on SPRING! 75 degree temps! That would help out with the electric bill, too! lol So there’s more than one good reason for spring time weather. Money in your pocket and sun in your face
Anyone looked at the Virginia radar? Swva mentioned something about the mountains…I am by no means good at weather, but it does look as if some of the precip is going into WV, and back into eastern KY. Could more of it get pulled back in, CB?
feb finished 1*F above norm which is near and above normal. this was a really complex system that the models has an extremely hard time with and no forecast got this one 100% right including mine which was way off for most of you.
i still disagree with the lack of an adv for the bluegrass counties nw of the bluegrass pkwy after reports of accumlating sleet and frz rain and ice still falling as a result of the no adv being issued roads were not treated and many people in these areas took things lightly resulting in preventable accidents.
any ice accum meeets there adv criteria and the impact was there as well.
Wrigley, your analogy of the top and these two systems made perfect sense to me. I understand it better now.
feb finished 1* above normal which is near and above normal.
i still disgaree with the lack of an advisory for the bluegrass area north of the pkwy after reports of sleet and frz rain accums and radar showing the mix would cotninue for a while longer and the ice resulting in very slick travel no adv was issued either at dinnertime or for there mid eve update. as a result roads were untreated which added to the travel impact. any ice accum meeets the criteria even frz drizzle and the impact was there.
no rhonda it move AWAY now.
Chris, thanks for the “nose of warm air” explanation and Wrigley, your “moisture eating northeast wind, pinwheel and top” analogies. I just wonder what happened?? …and I wonder too: “Has anyone ever saw a full day of heavy virga, nothing reaching the ground??” Even as of midnight it seemed radar showed us in the bullseye!
feb finished 1* above normal which is near and above normal.

RhondaB,
I found out as a teacher and a preacher that simple explanations are the best, we should not assume anything. I bet you’ll find that a lot of the people reading this blog have no idea what most of the technical jargon even means. A good teacher/preacher/forecaster should keep in mind that there are varying levels of knowledge in any group they are addressing.(NO offense to anyone, please)
I like how CB helps us to understand the complex nature of forecasting the weather.
We have some light snow falling in Pikeville.
Thank you Chris for all you do hard work, and you keep watch over us.I really appreciate you.
That’s what I thought, but just had to ask, 🙂 Thanks, Rolo.
feb finished 1* above norm so it was near and above normal temp wise for the month. I think march will be a bit warmer than that compared to avg however the 12z gfs says differently for the week of the 10th.
i still disagree with the lack of an adv for the bluegrass counties nw of the bg pkwy i made my reasons why on the last 2 posts.
Bring on the warmer weather. I’m ready for summer *let’s just skip spring.* It just blows my mind the deep south is getting so much snow and we get next to nothing.
I don’t think Spring is ready to kick in full gear yet. looking at the last few runs of the gfs it looks like a nice 7-9 day warmth, then the cold and Snow/Ice comes back…… 9-16 and on.
I hear you Vinny, I’m ready to start catfishing soon. I’ve been several times this winter but had no luck yet. Once the water temps get into the magic 50’s the cats will start feeding! I can’t wait, I had to miss several months last year due to a broken back. I’m ready for them now!!!
🙂 GO HEELS!!! 😉
CatfishJohn:
I got me a 20 lb channel last spring out of cave run, (Zilpo camp ground, and it was sooo pretty…!
later that evening, I was fishing with a little rock bass I had caught earlier and pulled in a 36″ Muskie..!!! When I hooked it, I thought, “man what a catfish!”, it fault like hell… lol
Oh what a night..!!! Come on spring..!!!
Dang it, I think I’ll go get all my fishing gear ready, just in case..!!!
…
NO SNOW !!!!
Had a very thin coating of ice early this A.M…..but all gone now.Temps at 31*…but I am happy my Raider’s won their district title!!!!!! Have a great day all 🙂
look at the radar, ohh so close it cranking up just to our e/se.
well to u wanting spring that fine, ME IM STILL LOOKING FOR SNOW AND WILL GET IT. I FEEL IT!!!
I really do hope you are wrong this time rolo. I am tired of these 1/2 inch snows that we had this winter. It’s time to let it go, and move on to spring. I really do hate winter without snow, and this was that type of winter for us in Knox Co.
There will be 0 snow
only slightly improved from last yr at least in my back yard.
Actually its still rotating toward the KY line, but it appears to be struggling over mountains. Probably won’t make it very far before lifting back out, maybe the KY/VA border counties can get in on some if it before then. You can see the precip toward north Ga not advancing any further west so its beginning lift there now.
anyone know about pike co. schools for mon? theres a lot of ice over my way. all the trees are white. i’ve heard that phelps is REALLY BAD.
Back edge of the snow is still creeping westward. Light snow being reported in Bluefield, Abingdon, and the Tri-cities airport (in Blountivlle/Bristol area).
IMO i don’t think it makes it past the mountains
I’m predicting we have school….but if Phelps is that bad….Mr Casey lives there and he’s the one that makes the call so one can only wonder.
snow from tn heading towards us later this evening. it’s supposed to be 15* tonight but the wind chills are supposed to be 0-10 above. so my opinion is we won’t have school.
Rolo always gets it right because he always flip flops.
well today i made the name offical,
THE GOAT has oofically been NAMED TFORD.
yep look at his OK ST team, SMALLEST IN THE LEAGUE AT ALL 5 POSITION BUT THEY PLAY HARD.
NOT EVEN HIS KIDS YET, seeing BILLY G will get 1 more year ford will be READY.
unless BILLY G RESIGNS, TRAVIS is the only man for next job, lets go back to a KY BOY and to a style that will PUMP UK BACK TO THE TOP.
FORD could TAKE THIS TEAM WE GOT NOW AND RUN WILD WITH THEM, WITH MILLER,PP,MEEKS,GALLOWAY ALONE HE run WILD.
feb finished 1* above normal which is near and above normal. i’m prediciting a warmer than normal march than feb compared to avg’s.
we’ll be taking the stairs up to spring this week.
.5 snow/sleeet total most of it sleet still disgaree about no adv issued early eve last night( nw of bg pkwy) as mixed precip cotninued in those areas. i made my points in the last post.
