Good Wednesday afternoon everyone. Once again… I want to say thanks to each of you for all the hard work you have put into keeping your fellow bloggers up to date on this latest winter storm. Thousands and thousands of people are without power and that will continue to be a problem for the next few days.
Temps are falling through the 20s out there right now and this means we are going to get all that water and slush to freeze up leading to poor driving conditions once again. Take a look at our current temps…
Snow showers will be on and off through the evening hours in most areas.
Looking down the road… we have a weak system moving in for Thursday night and Friday. This will likely bring an inch or two of snow to the region with the chance for some higher amounts in the mountains of eastern Kentucky.
We have been talking about the possibility of a winter storm impacting the area early next week. There is an increasing chance I upgrade to WINTER STORM THREAT at some point tonight or Thursday for this potential. The GFS has been all over this for a few days now and the European model is now jumping on board for a big time storm from the Gulf riding northeastward up the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. Take a look…
Monday Morning
Tuesday Morning
Tuesday Morning Close Up
Wednesday Morning
Wow! Like I said… the GFS is almost identical to this and the pattern supports a huge storm during this time frame. I will not hesitate to pull the trigger on upgrading this one!!!
Stay safe and take care.
And this ones less than 7 days away. Can’t wait for the naysayers to blow their hot air in here. That where all the WAA comes from.

By the way Chris, your efforts with the blog are truly appreciated. Keep up the good work. Why don’t you solicit some advertisers? You could make enough money to buy your own weather station complete with satellite and radar.
PULL THE TRIGGA’ I DARE YA? GO AHEAD IM MORE THAN READY….GIT R DONE BAILEY!!!

I hope he’s right, but like I said before, I’m starting to believe SE KY will miss out.
I am SO.. SORRY FOR THE TRIPLE TAKE THERE MY internet service froze up…and went crazy looks like
I double dog dare him to pull the trigger….
Thanks Chris for the updates.
I hate them flippin’ code #’s too.
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thanks Chris and my fellow bloggers for an outstanding job. Thankfully, my corner of the state was spared the worst of the storm. Continue to PRAY for those affected by the storm. Stay warm and stay safe.
OK, this is **very unofficial**
My measurements in my back yard (deck) are as follows…
Ice–1″ (measured several places)
Sleet–1″ (best guess on this)
Snow–2.5″ (several places)
For a grand total of 4.5 frozen crap…!
lets hope the next one is ALL snow..!!!
…
I’m not going to count my chickens before they hatch this time around. I got all excited by what the models had been showing before this last storm and got heartbroken. No excitement from me until I see this thing come to fruition. (OK maybe just a little excitement but not much 😉 )
this will turn out like past storm with major ice and 3-6 in snow
OK i have stolen Rolo’s crystal ball and it shows cold rain with flurries on the backside 😉
Hey! I read this weather blog ALL the time but I am no weather expert..i just love snow! I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the maps Chris put up today were showing for the potential storm next week. Thanks!
Snow, and LOTS of it. Short, sweet, and to the point. 😀
Rolo Rolo where for art there Rolo 😉
ROLO…Where you at man???… We need your negative thoughts on the upcoming storm before we get too excited about it…LOL..LOL…LOL…
BTW. tell Billy G…we want all snow this time…LOL………
Good thing we can joke about it, or we’d go crazy thinking about it…lol…
*-)
next week storm will be snow for middle jackson county northward. southward , to clay , then down to the boarder of tenn, rain will be the dominate precip. type. they will be about 30 mins to a hour worth something people call snow on the backside while the storm moves out of the area.
never forget WAA. it wins everytime
Jim you dog email me a picture of it
Andy that is worth something let’s put it on ebay!!!!! Andy you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Also thank you Chris for all your hard work.Hope all get their power on soon!!
GFS 18z still has our Mon-Tues storm showing up strong…
CB will probably issue his threat if it’s still there on the 00z…
…
Where is Rolo and Billie G???????
It looks like to me with the models the track is far enough to our east that we should be good to go with all snow. I may be wrong though. With the setup east and southeast ky would do better in terms of precip amt, and snow.
nice discussion for NWS about the Monday system… They are starting to pick up on it as well…
Check it out…

I was just thinking along the same lines. I don’t think we’ve had a storm track like this. Even this most recent I seen where Chris was talking about the low moving right over southeast KY last night. Those (right over and to the west) aren’t the really favorable tracks.
I have been going thru weather blog withdrawal, BIG TIME!! No electric!! Thanks to the guys who restored the electric!! I will be more prepared next time. Actually, I don’t know what I would have done differently except get out of here before it was too late. I do hope those still out gets their’s back on soon. Love the snow but no more ice, please!!!
CB doin live chat over at http://www.wsaz.com until 6
I’ll bet rolo ain’t got no lactric! If he did he would be on here.
No snow here…just high water
Since Chris isn’t in Lexington anymore, everyone go vote for TG in the newspaper’s favorite weather forecaster poll!
http://www.kentucky.com/787/story/674441.html
Billy G might be stuck in the ice..He might be trying to dig him out.
And Yes, I miss him too.
To all: Even though everything has passed by, it wouldn’t be a good idea to stand or park your car next to any of these trees that are looking like Weeping Willows. If they don’t look like that, well, here in Lex anyway, they have aready broken apart.
Stay Safe.
Wow, what a day! So thankful to still have power-what do you all think, if we still have it do we keep it at this point? Be safe everyone-you are in my prayers.
Roads are frezzing up in Morehead travel is becoming hazardous.
Great post…
I’m in..!
…
Rolo, is probably ICED over without power he is from Gunchester I am close by and it is a war zone around here. I read all time but this is my first post.
we have anywhhere from 10-12″….crystal i will forward a pic very soon
After looking through todays runs of the GFS and EURO (something I said I wouldn’t do. Can’t keep a good weenie down 😀 ), I believe it is safe to say that tonight, Christopher Bailey, will go into WInter Storm threat mode. I see nothing suggesting why he wouldn’t. Which naturally, we will get excited and this thing will either dicipate, or somehow end up being a lakes cutter. Lets hope not though.
Crystal….I sent you some pics and and email at your address.
I bet Rolo Has lost power again. If he did I’m sure he’s going through blog DT’s again! LOL!
Vinny – I’m in Meadowthorpe – do you still have power and will we keep it – half of Leestown is out and half on!
LOL. Way to go Jackson NWS. Now this is how you get people pumped up for a major winter storm. This is their thoughts on the storm next week.
SOUTHERLY FLOW WILL BRING A WARM UP THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH
READINGS RISING ABOVE NORMAL BY SUNDAY. A COLD FRONT WILL PUSH IN THE
REGION ON MONDAY. BUT IT WILL BE SLOWED BY LOW PRESSURE TRACKING
NORTHWARD ALONG IT. HAVE SPREAD HIGH CHANCE POPS ACROSS THE AREA
MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY NIGHT WITH RAIN CHANGING TO SNOW WHICH
WILL THEN TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS BY TUESDAY MORNING. MORE COLD AIR
WILL COME IN BEHIND THE SYSTEM WITH A SECONDARY DISTURBANCE BRUSHING
THE AREA. THIS COULD KEEP A FEW SNOW SHOWERS GOING IN THE HIGHER
TERRAIN.
Sounds depressing to me lol
I do…
My aunt lives on Forbes in Meadowthorpe, she says she still has power..
…
Same street – I still have it too – but after staying up all night listening and watching = I really need a snooze
Hey gang, Survived the storm, had a few hours off and on without power, but just got phone and internet back. Lots of ice here, pretty bad. Hope everyone is o.k. CHRIS NO STORM THREATS lol we need sunny and 80 now 🙂
HELLO, everyone from Bardstown! 🙂
Well, after 33 STRAIGHT HOURS of FRZ/RN/Sleet, and finally about 2″ snow in a short hours’ burst mid-morning, I am one of 8 households here in my subdivision that has not had even a power ‘flicker’!:) Since we are on rural elec and rest of subdivision is on either City or KU, this is severely ABNORMAL (heck, you can go outside & sneeze most days and it’d bring down a line..lol)
Lots of tree damage, but “Ol’ Man” in the front is still standing mighty and tall..the big limb that was threatening to cave in the house fell @ 2:30am, managing to twist and fall in the opposite direction (well, fell partly on the front porch..big deal)and missed the house completely! YAAY!!! Neighbor behind us’ “Big Daddy” tree near our fence did the same, falling just shy of our brand new shed! And neighbors next to them-their tree fell into the other neighbors’ yard, missing all the main lines (both cable & elec..) We are still w/o Cable (grumble-grumble), but that went out earlier last night. Electric customers here are not expected to get it back for a minimum of 3 days, maybe longer!
Now that I have bragging rights, watch the idiots come in to restore power and knock OURS off…;(
Hope everyone is doing fine and staying warm and safe! Let me know who all got my “Snow Love” and how much..I gotta see what I missed!;)
Hello CB. I caught your live blog on WSAZ. I don`t see how you do that and the weather at the same time. You are a very talented man. And boy, you did get alot of marriage proposals. You the man. “CHRIS BAILEY ROCKS”. Later dude. Everyone stay safe and warm out there.

Hey Chris! We just got power back in Dixie. No phone, no power, no cell phones either!!! Whitey and I just about went crazy. 80% of Magoffin county has been without power with at least 50% still without it! The hills look pretty spooky due to the ice and snow!
here’s henry from over at accuweather on the storm coming next week
http://www.accuweather.com/mt-news-blogs.asp?partner=accuweather&blog=Meteomadness&pgurl=/mtweb/content/Meteomadness/archives/2009/01/a_storm_that_might_be_75_of_the_93_blizzard_next_week.asp
Hush Yo Mouth some of us had 60s last night have yet to have any winter weather 😛
We just got power back couple hours ago here in crockett morgan coutny. boy ole henry at accucrack said this storm could be 75% of the big storm of 93! now thats something to chew on there!
Awsome!!! Hope everyone’s power is back on before monday. How funny would a southern blizzard be on groundhog day?!! What would be his call if he were snowed in his hole?
Watch next week’s storm to not track north and stay below us. By looking at this it could become old school if enough moisture is with it. It actually is a track that would bring some nice totals to snow deprived Southern/Southeast KY. It’s been years since this set up, hopefully the warm air will stay away.
Don’t the storms out of the gulf usually track upside the west of the mountains and go coastal? That would leave us out again, but then again this current track would give us a good snow in all of Eastern Ky… But the track could change..
Nice write up. Notice that he said that a storm like this could re-adjust the pattern that has shaped the weather for a long time now. This could be a nice change that would let KY back in on winter weather I guess. It may not make a difference this year, but it could help us in the future. He did also mention ice in the report (not good). This looks like our best shot for a decent snow down in here in Knox Co. Oh well, everything around here looks good 3 or 4 days.
I meant don’t they track east of the mtns? Not West, west would be a good thing…
Here’s the afternoon discussion from the NWS in Morristown…
http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=MRX&product=AFD&format=CI&version=2&glossary=1
They also had a discussion from early this morning that indicated some impressive things about the storm.
Ya’ know, Bob, I think you may be right. We honestly need something to break this stagnant pattern for us. This is what may be needed to get everything back to normal cycles even in Spring and Summer.
Power back finally in parts of Northern Lawrence County. AEP in this area did a fantasic job and still have several hard days ahead of them. So what have I missed you guys act like something has been happening and could happen again? LOL
WOW !! Ole HENRY… has went out there on a ledge hasnt he..I sure hope his theory is right..blizzard conditions and a foot of snow from northern Ga n.eastward…That would be a WOW STORM FOR SURE…
Can’t wait for Chris to pull that trigger tonight… By the way Chris, on the wsaz chat… 3 year old Brooklyn is my niece, she’s here right now… lol
My thoughts on the storm for Monday can be found in depth by clicking my name. Short hand, this storm has a TON of Potential, but I’m taking a wait and see approach after the a decade of being jaded by the winter weather.
Kinda Figured this would happen …

The key feature of the system next week, to my untrained eye, is that it will move to our east and will draw winds down from the north instead of from the south. Sounds “freezinger” than this last system.
Fire in the hole as Rolo says!!!!!!!
I expect the event to stick to the east and am counting on some rain for at least dome of the areas beaten by ice.
As far as nay-sayers… The ones I have seen pretty much nailed this one. I was calling for ice last week and my words were that it would mainly be ice for all areas south of G-Town and I expected either Lexington or Richmond lines areas to be the ground zero for ice. Looks like Richmond line was ground zero, but Lex got it too, though not as bad. Once again, the river defined a significant difference of ice and snow mix. More ice south of the river.
Looks like the nay-sayers have been far more correct over the past few years than the yay-sayers 😉
I have warned for the last few years that our main events for areas south of
G-town would be ice events, since the southerly fed systems used to be our old school events. This one was no different.
E KY and further east could get thumped with this one, but I do not see it nor want it for areas already crippled by the worst ice storm in decades.
