***********5am Update***********

Good morning everyone. Just dropping by for another update. Heavy snow and ice will continue across the entire state through mid morning. Significant snow and ice accumulation will continue for the next several hours. Roads are now snow and ice covered and we are getting reports of power outages across western Kentucky already. I expect to see those into central and northern Ky later today. This continues to be a dangerous winter storm!!

I want to show you the short range model known as the RUC… it only goes out to 12 hours and has been on fire this winter in nailing the temps. It was all over the 20s for highs Monday while the other models were busting by 10+ degrees. Look at what the RUC is showing for temps at 1pm today…

It is hanging on to the low level cold across much of the state… 20 to 25 showing up across the northern half of the state means look out! Now check out how much more snow the same model is forecasting through 1pm…

Interesting… but I am sure a lot of that will instead fall as sleet and freezing rain!! Again… this is a major winter storm that will likely lead to power outages in some areas later today. That is especially true  for areas that get several inches of snow then get significant ice! I am already looking at a couple of new inches of snow outside my window!

By the way… the 6z NAM now shows widespread 8″-12″ snows across the northern half of the state through Wednesday! That includes the Lexington metro! Wow.

I will have updates later… I have to take a short nap of some kind!

The rest of the post follows below…  Take care.

Good Tuesday morning everyone.A dangerous winter storm is moving across Kentucky today and will be spreading significant amounts on snow and ice. You will notice I have added the word DANGEROUS to  our wording here as this has all the makings of a system that can force power outages in some areas.

I will break it all down for you in a  bit… here is a look at the latest Warnings…

Radar is lighting up with heavy snow and ice moving across the region…

Temps today are going to be critical and you can track them here thanks to he Kentucky Mesonet…

Instead of a bunch of words from me… here is how I see this winter storm unfolding…

The snow and ice moving in early today is going to basically shut down the state! From several inches of snow in the north to major ice in the south… this has ugly written all over it. My greatest cause for concern is for the area I have outlined for the Ice Storm Tuesday afternoon and Night. Significant mounts of freezing rain is likely in these areas and this may be falling on top of several inches of wet snow. This combo could easily weigh down trees and power lines.

The throw another thumping snow on top of that for Wednesday and look out. That Wednesday snow should get everyone across central and eastern Kentucky. I am not going to talk numbers yet though. Here is the GFS snowfall through Wednesday night…

Another system dives through with accumulating snows Friday… look at the totals from now through Saturday…

Pretty impressive if it comes to pass!

Again… we are dealing with a dangerous winter storm over the next few days. Please help us out by posting the weather conditions where you are. I will be updating through the storm so please check back. I will initially add updates to this post before making new ones.

Stay safe and take care.
