Good late Monday evening everyone! I am just dropping by for a quick update as I am seeing a SERIOUS Winter Storm that is ready to slam Kentucky. Significant snow and Ice is likely tonight and Tuesday for many areas. It’s a situation that can start with several inches of heavy wet snow that turns into an ice storm for some. This is a recipe for possible power outages and I am now VERY concerned with what I am seeing.
To top it off… a MAJOR SNOW event is looking like a real possibilty for all of central and eastern Ky Tuesday night and Wednesday.
I will have maps for you in a bit as I just got home from work. I will be with you through this storm with updates so please check back with us on this developing serious winter storm. Here is radar to tide you over…
Take care

Hey Chris, you might want to pass along to TC and the rest of SAZ weather crew, Beckley’s thermometer is screwed up right now. I know an observer with a station hooked up through weather underground down there and it’s running 10-20 under the beckley thermometer the last two days, it had been running 1-2 degrees off from it. Just look at the Climo data and see that it’s missing.
Just mentioning that cause TC mentioned Beckley during the 11 and it’s not 42 here right now, it’s in the low 30’s.
thanks for update. too bed I shall go.
Thanx CB…
I’ll prolly be up ALL night with ya’ friend…
Just reading the history of the Steelers dynasty… Will take while… It’s a very think book..! 😉

Reposting what I put at the bottom of Chris’s last post.
All ice falling south of Ohio River. have received 1/10” of ice in Madisonville since event started at 9:00 CST.
TEmp is 26…Evansville, Indiana report sleet mixed with freezing rain. Snow line is North of Interstate 64 at current time.
This is going to go from bad to worse very quickly if you live in E-Town, L’ville or Lexington for sure.
Anyone else out there in the Western Part of the state?
Thanks Chris for the update. Working tonight until 7am tomorrow morning. Sounds like travel could very difficult in the morning.
This is going to get nasty folks, be prepared and be careful tomorrow.
Thanks Chris, hope ya make it home from work safely! That definitely looks like a monster heading for us! Be safe everyone.
I like the sound of a good snow tomorrow night.
Thanks a bunch Chris!! I was about to go to bed, but I think I might stay up just a little bit longer.. 😉 Pray for very little ice
Thanks! Just wondering…Is this tracking more south than expected? Give me guidance!
I like the sound of MAJOR snow tomorrow evening, but the ice thing has me a little worried… My wife has to drive from Grayson to Olive Hill on I-64 to work from 8:00 in the morning to 8:30 tomorrow evening…
I don’t know if I want her to go or not… what do you think?
Thanks Chris…I hope and pray everyone is prepared for this monster storm.

I am so excited! and nervous! I need to go to sleep though but it looks like southern ky might really see snow!
Is there such thing as a timeline on ice storms as to when the electric goes out? Could we wake up with out power in the morning or can it happen that quickly?
I hope I dont sound like an idiot. Just asking.
Hey all! I should have played the lottery tonight my security code was all threes! Anyway, I just got off work and had a little bit of something hit my windshield. It’s not doing anything now but from radar it shouldn’t be long.
There’s not a certain amount of ice that can knock out power, but I can assure you that if we get what is expected, then power will go out. Ice is just so heavy when accumulated. It doesn’t take much to knock out power. So to answer your question, yes, the power could go out that quickly in an ice storm.
Muddy…..yes the power can go out that quick, if we get alot of ice over night. hope not though. It will be definitely hard to sleep tonight, and I have to be up at 4am to start into work. yikes
i’m in the fort too, could be a good one for us.
Patty. Are you Patty S. or Patty P. at Sylvania?
Patty how was second shift???
Belski is currently doing live chat at Wave3. Says the cold air is building back to the south. Best news I’ve heard all night.
Also there are reports of thundersnow in Owensboro 🙂
The trouble with weather forecasting is that it’s right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it.
I’m not far from Owensboro (40 miles SW) and nothing but freezing rain and some sleet pellets here.
Evansville, IN TV reporting ice there as well.
Where did that thundersnow report come from?
But we have Chris and he’s right!
LOL
So True..
Here’s a pretty cool site I found just now that has people reporting their precipitation from all over the country. Pretty neat. You have to install that Microsoft Silverlight plugin, but other than that, no downloading. It just opens in a web browser.

Freezing rain in Simpsonville
Where is that? What larger city are you close to?
On the radar for TWC the rain line or freezing line looks like its creeping north into KY. But on the Radar Chris just posted it looks much further south. Why is that?

Check out the precip totals. Wow
I’m ready for my unassembled snow man to fall.
East of Louisville-Shelby County
Now if that was only all snow it would be great!!!
In 2003 it was just a few hours before electric went out (Morehead, Rowan County). Phones out the next day and no water the next day.
done with homework, heres to a snow or ice day, i have NEVER seen snow as heavy as it is just to lexingtons west thats 2-3” per hour type of stuff, lex may put down more than the 1-2” i was expecting before the changover to sleet/ice
Waitin’ patiently on whatever “Mother Nature” sends my way.
Hope everyone stays safe…
Thanks CB for all the updates
yea tommy your forecast was a bust it will change tommorow around noon but will not get above freezing
Coby, I am by no means a weather expert, but yes, it does look as if it is tracking a little more south. CB will probably post some more later on or in the morning.
my boys and I are awaiting our unassembled snow man
James..patty h at qworld.
Hey Crystal………..Hated it!
Does anyone know how long it’s going to take the storm to reach Eastern KY? I’m worried about the school buses in the morning. They may have school if nothing has shown up by then.
Tommy:
that blue on the radar is mostly heavy ice…already have 1/4” of ice here in Madisonville!!!!!
Thanks! I see ice below Nashville, and it makes me wonder. Guess we will know tomorrow!
Since this is all over the radar, I don’t think it would be wise for her to go.
Freasters.com is open and bailey bloggers are there chatting, come see us!
Extremely HEAVY SL/FR now in Bardstown…just started…I hope you all have yourselves prepared for the WORST, because this thing isn’t looking like it will be none too easy on us, as Chris alluded to!!!??:(
PLEASE take care, all my buddies here!!
Hows that late week system looking for us?
I’m going to bed. I don’t want to watch ice/sleet (hopefully sleet) accumulate all night.
If I wake up cold, I’ll know why.
Hope you have more snow than ice up towards Lexington.
is that sleet or Frz rain chris?
Wonder if we’ll get any thunder and lightning with this storm in East Central Ky. It’s been a long time since I experienced thunder during a snow storm. I still can remember the first time I ever heard thunder when it was snowing was when I was about 10 years old living in Northern Indiana. I was watching the weather channel and they mentioned that my town was reporting thundersnow and I thought that was something to be mentioned on a national tv station.
cupids chokehold(snow remix)
Take a look at the forecast its the only one i got
Bada dah da

Its been while since it last snowed this is going to sound like a bad joke but im finally thinking i may have found the storm, The storm that will lay down some quick snow. And i no it sounds sold old but the strom tracked northward. And im afraid i might give in, to the chance of rain and ice when.
All freezing rain here.

Song for the night “Cold, Rain, and Snow by The Grateful Dead.
My kids and i are waiting for our unassembled snowman
Henry-my first “thundersnow” was in Jan 94..I recall them predicting a huge snowstorm a week out, then nothing on the 15th, but I shopped anyhow :)-got up @ 3am, it was spitting snow…get up for work @5am, and Louisville is PARALYZED…and I am hearing thunder and seeing lightning..I started to stomp the floor and cuss a mile a minute,..?- HOW DARE they get SNOW and WE get a ‘Thunderstorm”….??- until I let our Doberman’s out to pee, then I ran out in my PJ’s into 16″ of SNOW!!! LOL! (The best part was being out of work for a whole week & getting unemployment!:))
You know, In Oklahoma, the precip looks very sparse…It looks like it is also moving rapidly, though moving right over KY, I wonder based on what I’m looking at on the radar as fast as its moving should this batch be done by late morning? It looks intense but not back building into Oklahoma.
I have butterflies in my stomach as if I were going on a blind date…… of course this is unfamiliar territory for us all……..been along time since we had such a storm!!!
ERRR, look again lol.
icy mix in versailles road surfaces iced up in 5 minutes.
icing that quick???… patiently awating cb’s update ……..i wonder how much effect waa will play in this storm?
Freezing rain just started on Richmond Road in Lex…very light initially but created an instant glaze on the vehicle I can see.

WOW!!!!!!!! Frankfort = Heavy snow and sleet, and I mean heavy never seen anyhting like this
Freezing rain Raccoon in Pike Co. Map shows snow but I don’t see it. TV cable and electricity flickered. Please don’t let power go out!! I’ve got the heat cranked just in case. Crystal are you out there?
In Nicholasville, there is not a drop of snow (as of 9:25 a.m.). We are ALWAYS (and I don’t mean the way married people use the term), ALWAYS left out of the fun stuff (snow, that is).
Here’s hoping for some snow tonight.
Why should I live?
