Good Sunday everyone! Let me start by saying thanks to all of you for helping out with all the weather reports from Saturday into last night. I appreciate all that you do for OUR blog! ![]()
The forecast played out very well with this system. A lot of areas picked up a slushy inch or two and would have had more had the ground not been so warm from the 50s from earlier in the day. I told you it would be a wild ride… we went from well into the 50s to having snow on the ground and 20s in just a few hours! Winds were wicked once again creating some blowing snow for a time.
Today will be marked by snow showers and cold temps. You can track the temps here…
Currents
Highs today will stay in the mid and upper 20s across the region which is pretty impressive for this late in the season. Keep in mind that normal highs now are approaching 50! ![]()
Snow showers will be on and off through the day and some of these will linger into the overnight hours. Areas into northern and eastern Kentucky will have the best shot at picking up some more light accumulations. Watch the snow showers here…
Radar
Slick spots on area roads are likely out there today so do be careful! Looking down the road…
1. We have a cold few days ahead of us. Lows Monday will be in the low to mid teens with highs struggling to get to the freezing mark.
2. Temps will warm toward the 40s by Tuesday and into the 50 degree range for Wednesday as southwesterly winds kick in.
3. Some of the coldest air of the season (which is saying something) will be heading into the northern plains by mid week. A big storm will likely fire up to our west and head toward the great lakes Thursday. This may bring another big wind maker and thunderstorms to us.
4. Temps will take a nose dive once that front moves through later Thursday with some backside snows possible to go along with well below normal temps that will take us into next weekend.
5. Looking for an early spring? Sorry folks… it ain’t happening this year. March is looking wild with a ton of active weather for us to go through. That includes more snow and cold and more wind and thunderstorms. Buckle up!!
I will update as needed through the day so check back. Have a great Sunday and take care.

Three inches of snow on the ground here.
Looks like Rolo was wrong…
Where you at Jared ?
Letcher county, along the Virginia border.
Looks like the next batch of snow is getting ready to move in according to radar.
About an inch on the ground in Pike County but roads LOOK clear…..wonder if there is black ice?
23* this mornin. Snow cover. Flurries and intermittent light snow falling.
INTERACTIVE RADAR http://mjhdp.tripod.com/stormtracker/id18.html
Roads are icy here. If spring is as active as winter has been, we’ll be looking at quite a few severe thunderstorms!
we have had only 1 decent snow this winter in Knox so other than having cold spells this winter has been quite tame for Knox county and there is black ice in Knox
Dusting here in Northeastern Ky… Carter County
Rolo got the forecast right for his neighbors to the south (knox co.). Less than an inch here. The warm air won out and kept the rain around too long. Enough of these little dustings. Less than 4 inches snow for the winter at my house. Andy is right the winter has been tame in Southern/Southeast KY.
2 to 3 inches at my house in London!!!
Hello everyone, Hope everyone is doing ok. Thanks for the update CB. We have about an inch or so up here in northwestern Lewis Co. And it`s still snowing. Who knows how much more we will get. Well, just thought I`d check in with y`all. Keep warm and stay safe out there. Catch y`all later.
congrats Mike
on a side note Rolo was calling for a flake or 2 😉 we got a little more than that 😛
Most of that fell before midnite, but we still have some huge flurries falling now!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s snowing here in Johnson County, at least at my end near the Floyd Cty line. The ground is covered, and the roads are starting to look slick, maybe 1.5 inches at the time. It is beautiful even if it isn’t the “big one”. I don’t know why watching it snow seems to calm me and give me inner peace…but it does.
Everyone have a great day and stay safe.
about 2-2.5 in. here in belfry. roads are covered.
school tomorrow?????
about 1″ here at my house, but on elevated surfaces and on top of the cars there is 2″…so if it would’nt have got to almost 60* here yesterday, and an hours worth of rain before the snow started…we would of had 3″ or more of snow down here to easily..
andy, bobt…. i stole your accumulating snow, its in my backyard……LOL…:)and its still snowing…
And what about District Tournament today—at EAST RIDGE?
i don’t know. i’d hate to miss another day of school! but if they’re going to close it, they should close it today. currently:pouring the snow, 26*
Tim, I may have 1/2 inch here in Barbourville. Too much rain before the snow. What do you think the school situation will be, since you obviously have a little more than this part of the county?
I talked to someone yesterday and they said if we don’t miss anymore that we’re out right around Memorial Day…..but then of course there’s all the rumors about the calamity days.
We have a little over an inch here at the Hargis ranch this morning, with a snow shower in progress. Radar looks like we might see a few more snow showers before the morning is out.
We also have 23 degrees here, and the road out in front of the house in the subdivision is slick.
Be careful going out to get to church this morning! You might fall on your keister if you are not careful!;)
Thanks Chris…about 2 inches or so at my house in Isom (Letcher County).
Sounds like Central and Southern Ky received way more than anyone in Northeaster Ky… It’s my turn to whine!! WAAAA!
Tim, we had rain here too, but chris said we would. Ours only lasted for about 45 minutes or so before it changed over to snow. but when it did, it was an ammediate change over. I mean within ten-fifteen seconds, it went from snow to rain.
Snowing nice big flakes here in Lexington right now. Been going on for a while. Looks like about another 1/2 or 3/4 in. so far on top of the inch we had last evening.
I’m guessing close to 2 inches on my car in campbellsville. nice since we usually get jipped
radar on wchstv shows intensifying snow squalls in breathitt co and floyd co. heading towards pike co.
We have around 1 to 1.5 inches of snow here with snow showers, however, the roads are icy due to the quick freeze that we had last night. If the temps don’t go above freezing today, I don’t think we will have school tomorrow.
bob..I dont know, the road in front of my house has snow on it,and its still snowing here..so i can only imagine what the roads are like up around the dewitt area,if they got as much as i have in my area…I guess it’ll depend if,and how much sun we get today…
about 1 ” here in Corbin. Last nights drive home from Lexington sure was interesting!
Wish my kid was older so we could go play in it.
About 2 inches here in Gtown. Probably no school for a week again…….
how come 30 min ago the radar was covered with snow then it just disenegrated? is it still there?
If Scott Co. has no school tomorrow, then I called it right….again!
Chris is dead-on about severe weather for March, but accumulating snows will not be much of a factor at all. Kick butt severe (non snow) storms will be. Winter will go out like a lion- but not the type we would hope for 🙁
WXman, for being a “blind squirrel” you sure do find a lot of “nuts”. You got it right again for me even though there were some “naysayers”. I woke up to a white Sunday, went out and measured and we have a scant inch and 1/4.
Good Morning frm Richmond. Got a pretty good little snow on this morning. Was going to go to church but a little slick for me this morning. Will watch it from my couch – church and flurries. Sounds like a country song. 🙂
Ok, I am whinning! Waaaaaaa! I’m done with this snow!!!!!!!!!!! We have about 2 inches here around Morehead. Still snowing!
half an inch and we got way more you must not have had anything then and until Southern KY matches what you NKY people have no you can’t whine 😛
think a snow day tomorrow?????? i’d say so… Pouring the snow here. some spots in my yard picked up about 3 in. other spots there’s as little as 1 in.
Picked up a little over 2″ of snow here in East Bernstadt. There is a light snow shower in the area, but the sun is already trying to peek out. Roads appear clear, but as we learned last night on our own road, black ice is an issue in the areas sheltered by trees.
It’s beautiful outside BUT I’m still ready for Spring!!!!! 😀
I see no reason to disagree with Chris’ long range outlook. I do see some warm periods in March, and the potential for thunderstorms for sure, but with the NAO trending back towards negative and the PNA tracking back towards Positive we might have one last chance at a decent winter storm. My guess is we will see at least two more measurable snows *1 inch or more* before the end of the March.

Pikeville, Pike County.
Snow m1.5 inch, reported by Emergency Mngr.
Thanks for your thoughts Shane
We have beautiful snow on the ground here in Bourbon County. It’s sunny and bright!! So I must find something to complain about. Let me think. . .
Oh yeah, Lauren had “Windy” on her long range forecast for Friday. Now, if she had put “Snow” on it, we all know that something would change and it wouldn’t happen. But, since she put “Windy”, it is carved in stone. I hate wind. I hate it and I’m sick of it. So it will be very windy on Friday.
Enough said. 🙁
stinks that this will melt:(
Between 2 and 3 inches in Perry County.
Rolo, oh Rolo, where art thou, Rolo?
Isn’t is funny when Rolo is wrong, (which has been a lot lately), he just doesn’t show up on the blog.
Song of the day for ole Rolo: Being wrong By Collin Raye
things are sure trending colder on the long range the gfs is going toward what the euro weeklies have had (normal to below norm temps) instead of a blowtorch and well above avg temps which the long range gfs has had the past week or so.
i expect this back and forth pattern to continue next week may be a repeat of the last week. don’t look at the 00z euro if you want a early spring.
No he didn’t. My buddy that lives over in Knox County about five miles from Bush area in Laurel County, has two inches and counting. So no, he didn’t get it right.
1.3 inch total in versailles, some of you really did well on this one!!!!
make sure when measuring not to stick the ruler agressively in the grass or you may overmeasure if possbile try to get a mesurement on a flat surface.
The sun is trying to shine now here around Morehead. Hope the snow melts!

POURING the snow here. Its going sideways & u can’t see the road below.
Wow! What a wild ride late yesterday and evening. I drove to Campbellsville from London about noon yesterday and had sun for most of the drive. It was cloudy from Columbia to CVille. When I went into the ballgame there was no precip. In between the girls and guys game (around 4:00) it was raining. When I came out after the guys game there was close to and inch on the ground and very heavy snow fall. Started back home and could hardly see the lines on the Cumberland Parkway. I kept thinking I would drive out of it and sure enough around Nancy I finally got into rain. The rest of the way home it was rain and then in some places it would be mixed with snow or sleet. With in a few minutes of walking into the house the snow started falling. What a wild ride I had had.
Looks like no school tomorrow???? Of course the sun could come out this afternoon and take this all away.
Hope everyone is safe. 🙂
Hi all snow and 29 degrees in Pikeville. We picked up about 1.5 inches its really pretty out, hope it sticks around a little while. It is coming down pretty good too.
Chris again you nailed this one.Do you have a Crystal Ball j/k lol. Thanks for all your hard work. When can we expect another video report?? Here is my song to you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjpve1LoqiE
It’s on the road?? I’m in Grayson and nothing is on the roads, only a dusting on the grass…
gfs has the 70’s it was showing as a thing of the past and has gone to extreme cold and snow for the start march, temps would avg 20 below avg for highs. so much for hoping the euro was wrong about another week of winter to start march.
anyone have school info for monday?
Little over an inch down on the border and still comin down.Temps are holding at 29*…Stay warm everyone and have a great day!
WOW !! impressive, thats how I would describe these upslope snowshowers in my area today…living in an area thats usually on the edge of the upslope flow, this one today has been something else…snow most of the day so far, a peek or two of sun as well but mostly a snowy day , and several occasions where it was quite heavy…
In the shady spot behind my house, where there has been NO snow melt, I measured over 2″….so its been a good stay at home by the fireplace day,and watch a good movie…
OH BROTHER !!…here we go again..a day 7 storm trying to develop along the east coast on the 12z run of the gfs…I gotta feeling March is gonna give the phrase MARCH MADNESS…a whole different meaning…
hey pike, heard anything about school?
Not yet….I think right now all they’re worried about is this District Tournament. Basketball worries trump school worries every time!!! I just hope they decide tonight rather than tomorrow if they’re going to cancel.
My husband is taking my daughter to the game….when he gets home he’ll probably have talked to some people that may have an idea of what they intend to do as far as school goes tomorrow.
check out this hyper little clipper for the 3rd of march..
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_pcp_216m.gif
the whole first week of march looks as if its gonna be like today…cold, and possibly white
WOW..the 12z run of the gfs has lots of winter opportunities on it. if you like the winter weather check it out, if not well…ummm…just wait til the 18z comes out..im sure it’ll be entirely different..LOL…:)
It is a shame that schools are worried more about sports than the wellbeing of all of the students. It is the same here in Scott County.
No more model watching please… at least until a day or two before… They are wrong way more than they are right…
I am worried about refreezing in all of the counties that have had melting today. What do you guys think?
looks like we have a rolo follower
They could be someone making up their own mind instead of just agreeing with what ever one else says.
Snowing pretty good in Pikeville.Temp 29 degrees.
NO snow melting here in East Powell Co. a good 3 inches on the ground and still snowing at a good clip. Chris was spot on AGAIN.
is it laying? saw on a pikeville weather cam the snow has all melted. what about at your house?
What is melting is being replaced by the snow showers, still have around 2 inches here, the roads are clear but wet, tonight when the refreezing takes place it will be slick! 29 degrees now.
Yeah with Rolo, he never agrees. When he is right (which is very rare lately) he’s on here patting himself on the back every minute. But when he’s wrong, poof, he’s a no-show. LOL.
don’t students play the game ??
We got around 2 inches on the ground around Pikeville but some has melted. Some of the roads are covered especially where the sun doesn’t hit the road. Do you think the buses can travel the back roads tomorrow?
Some. It isn’t like the entire student body is on the football or basketball team.
It is still snowing but the wind is blowing it off,so not laying alot.
Yeah they sure do…come hell or high water…..or snowstorm.
All the snow has melted in my front yard. But in my back yard I’ve still got 2 in. No snow on 119 in Belfry. Roads are dry. So, if it depended on this side of the county, we would have school tomorrow.
Ditto at Coon Creek…..Dorton may make the difference….or more snow tonight.
Getting in on a decent snow shower in London around the Sublimity area.
28 degrees and the refreezing has started, quick snow shower has cover everything that was elevated that had melted. Untreated roads should be next, if it continues to snow.
If you were betting and took a look at the radar, I think you’d take the side of school being cancelled tomorrow.
It all depends on when it quits snowing. just by what I would do, and by how it is here, I would not have school.
I think it depends on the temp tonight. should go ahead and close because of refreezing.
33* Snow showers all day in Mercer and Boyle Counties. The only thing that melted of course is what was in direct sunlight………….On to the next event severe or snow.
anything that falls tonight will be on roads and looks like moisture is statewide through indiana. look at weather.com radar
I’ve had enough of winter. Only around 4 inches total for the winter here at my house in Knox Co., so it’s just been a cold dry winter for the most part here. I wouldn’t mind one good snow in March, but that’s only if we have some good weather in between. Enough of the cold, stay in the house stuff.
Husband just got back from the game and said everyone was talking that we would have school. I think they’ll try their best to keep us in session.
Well. It looks like we hit the “foot” mark in Lexington this season. Twelve inches at the airport. Normal value should be 12.4, so .4 below normal. I saw where Jackson has has 28 inches of snow this season!!! Shut up! I didn’t know they have had THAT MUCH!
About 2.5-3 in. here. 26* and already ice covered. on my deck we have 1/2 in. of snow and a skim of ice. At least a delay tomorrow. Leslie co. already closed.
Pouring the snow. Roads are covered. Perry co. closed.
Richmond got about two inches of snow last night, but most melted today. Had it not melted, we would have about three inches on the ground. Oh well.
think they were measuring in centimeters not inches
We probably won’t be on a delay. Just talked to someone at the board and they said we don’t have any delays left….if they have to delay they might as well close because we’ll have to make up a day.
The last snow shower just covered the road in front of my house, I just don’t think they would try to have school tomorrow.
I hope they don’t.
Its a severe weather simulator, you get to issue warnings and stuff its pretty interesting.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/HotSeat/hotseatstart.shtml
Letcher closed, I just don’t see them trying to send us tomorrow.
Our neighbors, letcher co. just closed. Roads are covered and about 3 in of snow on the ground. VERY ICY. Stay Safe! keep me updated.
Knott Co just closed.
That’s a fun simulator and is really eye opening on what the meteorologists issuing warnings have to go through.
I just don’t understand what they are waiting on for calling off school. It isn’t going to get any better.
Snow showers making an attempt at Pike from Lexington.
this gives us good insight into MJ’s job. watch out one or two will be hard to catch.
Listen, I know these people…..they are SO reluctant to cancel that it is ridiculous. They DO NOT want us to have to make up an unnecessary day….but I’m with you….I wish they’d do it!!!!
I know, I have been doing this for 22 years, but just the thought that I would put one child, let alone a whole bus load in jeopardy just blows my mind.
Why do you want to pick on our Rolo????????????
I totally agree!
This is a pretty popular simulator that shows how its like during small and large outbreaks. The second and third cases are pretty difficult and illustrate how it feels to be on a hot seat…so to speak. All offices have weather event simulators that run on a separate workstation. We train on them constantly with all types of weather events…from local ones…to ones that occur in different parts of the U.S.
me too
Hello everyone, Hope everyone is doing ok. Thanks for the update CB. We have about an inch or so up here in northwestern Lewis Co. And it`s still snowing. Who knows how much more we will get. Well, just thought I`d check in with y`all. Keep warm and stay safe out there. Catch y`all later.

looks like all i can hope for is icy roads to get out of school but i guess if we go its ok
Finally closed!
and surprisingly floyd, martin, or johnson counties haven’t closed yet.
I am thankful.
Snow showers have now covered areas that was melted earlier here in Jeffersonville.
Snow is over here and I have 4 inches on the back deck. Just went and measured it so I guess you can call that offical. I know from traveling through Knott, Floyd and Johnson couties that seems like a high total but it is true. 8 miles down the road there is less than 2 inches weird!!
Snowing again in Pikeville.
Northern Knott Co you know what they say location location location lol!!!!! I know what you mean Pikeville will have nothing and go 8 miles up the road and I will say wow!!!!!
Is the teacher from Coon Creek still on that I talked to???
Hey Crystal….I’m here now….ya there?
Been snowing on Lakeville [Magoffin] for about 45 minutes to an hour now. Everything is covered and still coming down at a pretty good clip.
Hi I was just wandering how the roads were up in Coon Creek?? Sometimes I regret selling that big beautiful home.It was so far up though.I bet it is bad up to that house.Being an animal lover I regret in that way I could have pets without some neighbors here in town breathing down my neck lol One night I looked out when we were living there that year it was almost dark not quiet and i looked and saw a big deer right in my driveway,it was beautiful. My husband loved it because he could get away from everything.I loved the big porch my husband would take several naps there or we would eat lunch out there. It was just so far.Do you ever go up there past the house? Is your school out tommorow?
The roads are fine where I live…about 1.2 miles up but I don’t know about past us. I bet you do miss that house….but living close to town has its perks too! It sounds like it would’ve been a great place to retire!!!! I hardly ever go past my house….how many miles was it up Coon Creek?
Did you ever get a new kitten?
Yes our school is out tomorrow. YAY!!! But I still have to go in tomorrow evening and work the District Basketball tournament….at least I can sleep late!
The house was 7 miles up to the end almost.Glad you get to sleep late tomorrow.
Yes we got a cat from some people at a grooming shop someone sit out.The first 2 night we didn’t sleep at all she was soooooo wild. After a week I called to see if we could bring her back lol.She said yes but after a few more days she has calmed down alot. She is not Slyvester by any means but she is company. She is my husbands cat follows him every step stays in his lap.I told him I was going to have to get me one lol.It is the opposite of Slyvester(I know I spell it weird) he took every step I took and stayed with me always.I am still broken over him 15 years is a long time to have one,but Slyvia is helping to fill in the time but I still cry daily for Slyvester.Do you have any pets?
more bad nws for an early spring models hinting at a chance of frz drizzle or flurries tue night.
MITCH ARE YOU SAYING BAD NEWS FOR A EARLY SPRING OR FRZ DIZZLE?????
We had about two inches of snow where I live just north of Hazard. I think the roads will be slick tomorrow morning. They were wet this afternoon. The falling snow showers were beautiful today.
