Good Wednesday, everyone. A monster pattern flip continues to evolve across much of the country. This will be highlighted by massive arctic air masses invading from the north this weekend into all of next week. The cold is a given and is showing up during the period I’ve been highlighting since Christmas… The second week of January.
Can we get snow from all this cold? That seems to be the million dollar question on minds across the bluegrass state.
Let’s start with a system working in here for late Thursday into Friday. This is mainly a rain maker, but it could start out with some light frozen stuff in parts of the north and east. The Hi Res NAM simulated radar for Thursday night shows the freezing line hanging around as precipitation moves in…
Temps quickly rise into Friday with showers taking over.
From there, it’s all eyes on the weekend and another storm system rolling into this part of the world. The models are still figuring that whole thing out and will continue to do so for a few more days. The latest Canadian Model…
Taken at face value, that’s rain on Saturday with a switch to a period of snow then snow showers and crashing temps on Sunday. That same model run continues to pound the cold in here on Monday…
The European Model for the weekend system keeps jumping around on which low to focus all the attention on. The current solution is west of it’s earlier run…
Face value would be rain Saturday with a period of snow and snow showers for Sunday.
The same run of the European then brings a round of gusty snows for Monday as arctic air surges in…
Another, more potent, arctic blast then dives in a few days later. Check out these shots with the temperature departures in Celsius…
As that second blast arrives Tuesday night and Wednesday, it should be accompanied by some snows…
This is one amazing pattern flip from where we were in November and December. It’s backing up my thought process on how this El Nino has no equal!
For the record.. I still believe February brings our “worst of winter”.
I will update things later today, so check back. Make it a great Wednesday and take care.
I’m excited to finally have some potential snow in the forecast!
I wouldn’t complain if this pattern flip was pushed out yet again. The ridiculous warmth this fall and winter thus far has just killed my winter spirit.
Mark today as the point in time where we shifted from the original heavy winter back end coming in Jan and Feb to now focusing on Feb.
Does anyone remember last winter before 2 huge snows we had? It was Dec and Jan before this happened and during that time (before the big snows) people were complaining like MAD and saying “bring on spring” only to end up with brutal cold and deep snows……LOL LOL . It took until Feb for this to start happening, so you just never EVER know until we get into April, and even then sometimes it can snow up until that point.
Yes, I clearly remember being Joe Smug at the first of February and thinking we had that winter beaten. WRONNGGGG!!
Rodger not impressed by this weekend’s snow chances. Get your “Brrrr …” ready for mostly rain. The cold after that will make it feel wintery – wonder how long it sticks around? Rodger in Dodger
Agreed. The meh is strong with this one….
Yep.
In my 14.5 years living in central KY, I have seen pretty much every extreme now. Well over 100°F in summer, -18°F in winter, and last winter’s big snows. I’m good if this winter happens to not provide that.
It was 10 degrees up here on the ridge in greenup this morning….brrr….not surprised with the model flopping…tends to.happen to.us good ol Kentucky folk lol
Warm and wet,..Cold and dry..Guess that’s how we roll this month..Just seems like the STJ stays squashed to our south when cold air is around and when something does develop it cuts and we warm and get rain..Beginning to dislike godzilla El Nino..
Wave3 saying weekend storm no big deal. Said southern Indiana might get light accumulations but thats it.
Oh no, say it ain’t so. Looks like we are back to the dreaded wrap around/backside flurries.
Not looking good for the snow chances this weekend. CB even seems disinterested about the snow. It seems the main focus is the cold. 🙁
Latter part of February snows do not stick around long in Southern Ohio. The Sun’s angle hitting the earth is more direct making its rays
much stronger.
Was looking forward to a good snow next week but it looks like I need to just be grateful for the light snows headed our way. It will make the “big one” that much more worth it when it does arrive!
I just seen on Facebook where meteorologist David Aldrich from sister station here in Tennessee wvlt is on track with Chris for snow on Sunday check out his animation video…
The local forecasters in the Huntington WV area don’t like the snow chances this Sunday. And they also have 40’s all next week except 35 on Monday. I guess you could make the case that 40’s are an artic blast considering all the 60’s and 70’s from Nov and Dec.
i don’t know which station you watched but wsaz had 30’s for all of next week with snow showers every day and there were 2 days of 22 and 25 for highs not lows.
