Good evening, gang. We continue to watch the weekend and beyond as winter looks to take control of much of the country.
The models continue to try and figure out the weekend system, but we are likely seeing a deepening system spinning across the eastern Ohio Valley. Here’s the European Model showing rain for Saturday with some snow sweeping in by Sunday morning…
Snow showers and flurries would then continue on that run into Sunday afternoon as temps drop through the 20s.
The arctic front then shows up by Tuesday evening…
That delivers another strong shot of arctic air behind it into the middle and end of next week. The European Model does put some snow down with those two systems…
The latest indicies show massive blocking taking place over the next few weeks. These forecast numbers are similar to some of the numbers we say in recent winters. The Arctic Oscillation forecast is off the charts negative…
Throw in a big ridge across the west coast and a strongly negative NAO…
And you can get some wicked winter weather across the country right on through February. The forecast blocking is VERY impressive!
Enjoy the evening and take care.
Well I for one hope the bitter cold stays north this year.. I’m tired of half the county losing water everytime we get to single digits..
Looks quite winter-like by the middle of the month. Ready to see some snow on the ground! Would love a good Apps runner
Please: what is an apps runner?? So confused
Not sure I have this totally right, but in my thoughts an apps runner is a low pressure system that tracks up the spine of the Appalachians and sets KY up for a good snow.
Thank you Faye. Much clearer now!! I will figure all of this out eventually…
I am always a bit on the outside of full understanding of these maps and numbers and I’m used to that. But tonight’s update throws something new into the murky soup: blocking. Can anyone tell me what that means???
Basically it causes the the pattern to stay the same over a long period of time…typically when there is a ridge in the west during the winter its much colder in the eastern half of he country..Chris is referring to the blocking showing up here in the next few weeks…so basically be ready to be in a winter pattern for a period of time
Chris said “wicked” not snowy. Deep plunges of Arctic air don’t bode well for good snows here. It generally suppresses the southern storm branch.
Not looking like much snow, but some relatively cold air. It will seem colder since a lot of us are still acclimated to the warm December. Brrr.
Looks more cold than snow for now.
Looks like it’s time to dig out the thermal underwear…
Thanks Corey. And thank goodness. I was packed to move to Canada to find some Winter!
Once again I ask a question and once again it doesn’t get answered.I asked this question 5 days ago.I have plans for Friday janurary 15th.am I going to have to change those social plans?I need an answer here.
