Good evening, everyone. Our winter storm continues to put down heavy snow across central and eastern Kentucky. This is the area picking up on several more inches through the evening. Roads across the entire state are snow packed and dangerous.
What happens after tonight is now the focus of the forecast. A very robust storm system will throw a lot of moisture back into the region Monday through early Tuesday. Temps are going to be absolutely critical and the numbers, so far, haven’t been responding as much as the models thought.
There is a ton of precipitation coming our way. Here’s the liquid breakdown…
This can lead to two big problems for tomorrow and early Tuesday. If this is all rain where you live, flooding is a big concern. With snow on the ground and the ground frozen solid… runoff will be tremendous. Flooding and flash flooding are a big concern.
The other big concern is for the potential for a heavy band of snow to develop on the backside of the low pressure. Watch how the cold air tries to crash back into the heavy precipitation…
A degree or two could mean all the difference in the world. At this point… I do expect a band of moderate to heavy snow to develop somewhere across central and eastern Kentucky.
Tomorrow’s setup is wild and it’s not cut and dry by any stretch of the imagination.
I will try to get more specific with all this later tonight.
Something else to keep in mind… even with it raining and air temps going just above freezing… the ground and roads are frozen. That can sometimes lead to icing issues, even it isn’t truly “freezing rain”.
The next system quickly dives in behind this with more snow and a mix likely late Tuesday and early Wednesday…
Here are your tracking toys for the rest of the evening…

Enjoy the snow and take care.
We received 11/2 inches in Shepherdsville, a big disappointment for me. But its about 23 degree`s here. Thats about 4 or 5 degree`s cooler than I thought we were suppose to be. Earlier they were calling for 36 tomorrow. so I`m wondering if tomorrow may stay around 32 here and if so, what we may get precip wise.
I`m hoping for more snow tomorrow.
Yep that’s the big question….If the dynamic cooling kicks in with heavy rain……..it could get nasty……..be fun to see what happens with this tricky weather…..heavy rain or heavy snow or both?
Hello out there. My husband just went outside and measured in 3 different places and we have 4+ inches so far up here in NW Lewis Co. It started snowing hard about 3:30 to 4 O’clock this afternoon. I’ll catch you all later. Be safe out there.
We do not yet have an inch in north Richmond. Wild how more to the north and south. No heavy stuff falling here yet. The river back to it’s old tricks ๐
I don’t know if this happened everywhere today ,but from what I saw , a lot of places came in today 3 to 5 degrees colder than forecasted …..if that happens again tomorrow …watch out
Yeah forecasts for today were about 5-6 degrees to warm for BG.
Agree. But, I did expect temperatures to continue rising all the way till midnight. But at 22 here near Louisville, I don’t think it is going to make it to 30 before midnight or even 35 by morning, according to some local Mets.
By the way 2.1″ at my house everyone. I didn’t think it was possible after only having 0.6″ a little earlier.
Once again the Charleston NWS, did what they do best, waited till the snow started to issue a Winter Storm Warning along I64. Now all their followers at the local news stations will fan out for total severe weather coverage and take credit for giving us a heads up.
It also started snowing heavy in Nicholas County about 3. We now have close to 5 inches at 8:15. 19 degrees here.
It seems like”heavy” snow – almost icy!
All ice in Whitley a good 10 hours early, not one model or meteorologist called that…fun times I tell ya
Just back from a walkabout in downtown Lexington. Maybe 3 inches and the snow seems a little heavier just now. A beautiful night, not a lot of traffic out.
Tomorrow sounds like a mess. Thanks for your expertise Chris!
Heavy sleet in southern Pulaski county. Might have topped 8″ if not for this non sense. Still got a good 5-6″
Its still 24 in Shepherdsville. Its been around that all day, so it has held steady, not risen like forecast. I think it was forecasted to be 30 around midnight. Wont happen.
Monday might be interesting around the Louisville metro area.
Snowing more steady in Richmond now. Picking up now.
3 to 4 so far in Berea, depending on where you measure, and it looks like maybe another 60 to 90 minutes left before the system finishes and moves out.
Wishing for cold rain instead of snow tomorrow is like rooting for someone to win in a Duke / UNC game, unhappiness all around no matter who wins.
Measured 4 inches here in NKY just south of the river.
25 and freezing rain Barbourville
Heavy snow on the way, just changed over here in Corbin. Biggest flakes yet ๐
Changing back to snow now
It’s beautiful isn’t it, Haven’t seen flakes this big since 93 or 96
All snow in Corbin Now, biggest flakes yet ๐
light snow 24 in Annville in Jackson Co. got 4.6 inches. I think some u guys don’t know snow from rain sometimes.lollllllllllllllll some u would gripe if u won the lottery.
And I think you don’t know what it’s doing in everyone’s backyard ๐
Ban rolo
It’s Han Solo. Know Star Wars!
Wash blew this storm off for days…said it was no big deal. Now it’s snowing hard in the Huntington area and while I still have no idea how many inches we are to get, we are getting close 2.
The weather mets around here are useless.
Sorry I mean wsaz
Nice to know I am not the only one who notices this about our locals. We had one on the last big storm calling for mostly rain as late as 11pm the night before.
Snow coming down in northern Clay county. We have 4 inches as of now.
Chris, is there any chance of this staying all snow? Can we keep the warm air out of KY? We are praying for all snow and hope the snow keeps falling. If it changes, floods tomorrow. Thanks for the update, hope on the next one you have great news that cold air is winning the race!!
Chris just tweeted this:
Plot thickens Monday/Monday night. NAM/Hi Res NAM a little colder. Hi Res has a VERY heavy snow band by tomorrow night.
Maybe some hope for us Snow lovers!!!
I hope so! Been praying all day.
27 news said rain is likely in the morning. Question is a little or a lot.
Today has been fun! Unless you have been out on the roads,
I hear not much has been done to them and they are treacherous. Be safe if you are out weather friends.
Also, per Mr Bailey’s tweet, I’d love to know where he thinks this heavy band of snow could be setting up. Wouldn’t that be icing on the cake!
Thanks Mr Bailey, as per usual, your forecast was spot on!

Go to hour 30
Snowing hard and about 3 inches on the ground in Belfry. Will be hoping we in Northern Pike County are one of the lucky ones to get some snow on Monday instead of the dreaded mix and cold rain.
Just say No to Snow. Well, stuff I have to shovel at least.
3 to 4 inches in my part of Knott co with snow coming down at moderate pace looking west looks good for more snow tonight. If we get 2 inches of rain tomorrow it could get very interesting for our small streams.
Extremely heavy snow at the moment, if it keeps this up then 8-10 inch totals don’t seem out of the question.
You can have it ๐
Heavy snow in Leslie Co.. At least 5 inches on ground, if this keeps up will top 8+ easily.
Posted a pic to twitter a bit ago — our area of West Lexington only ended up picking up just under 2 inches of snow and it has completely stopped now (that is totally fine by me!). It’s funny how totals vary so much just within a few miles because I have family members that live in other areas of Lexington that have 4+ inches.
Big thanks to the road crews and troopers out there just got to lee co from Cincinnati and they did great watching for motorist in need. Just to many people out in corvettes and other cars not adequate for this travel and driving like idiots. Slow down.
7 inches+ in Laurel County!!! Several hours of snow to go! NWS lowered our high tomorrow from 40 to 33. Interesting.
Ashland/catlettsburg line about 7 inches on our driveway and not sure of the temp. Cant eait for tomorrow’s durprise rain or snow. Thanks Chris for all u do for us do we can be prepared and that means safe. Gid Bless U!!!
God Bless u!!! There is a learning curve with this new phone. Please excuse typos!!
Temps here in Lexington have gone up from 21 to 25 in the last 45 minutes… didn’t think the increase was going to happen that quickly, but it seems to be increasing fast!
Just a smidge under 5 inches in Georgetown. Out of the Big 3 in Lexington, Chris was the only one to have the line far enough north to cover Georgetown. Not bad for a Winter Weather Advisory.
You got two inches more than Richmond and it was in the warning area. We did not appear to make the minimum map, since about 3″ in north Richmond.
Less slush for tomorrow, so all good ๐
For those of us who follow models, it breaks my heart to see so much potential washed away. Comes with the territory I guess.
temp has went from 17 to 20 here in athens oh
I measured just a tad over 5 and half inches in northern clay county.
Just south of Jackson ohio snowed from 5-9 ended up with 4 inches. Still at 20 degrees as of 1:30
Oh boy, HUGE flakes mixing in with the rain here in South Lexington at this moment. If heavy precip and dynamic cooling continue, I could definitely see those 8″+ totals just East of here!
