Good Monday evening to one and all. Here’s hoping each of you are putting the wraps on a wonderful note. Many areas got in on some rain and sleet showers earlier today with brightening afternoon skies. It’s full steam ahead into a wintry pattern and we have your model breakdown.
Let’s start with the European Model as it continues to be the steady leader…
It has the arctic front moving eastward on Thursday with temps dropping into the 20s behind it. There is also likely to be a band of light snow behind the front from Thursday afternoon and evening. Check out the pool of cold air moving in for Friday! Brrrr You will also see the weekend clipper showing up by Saturday morning just to our west. This has a shot to bring us a swath of snow this weekend.
The GFS is slowly coming around to the deeper and colder trough idea of the European Model. It also shows the band of snow behind the arctic front…
Watch for the numbers on the GFS to come down over the next few days. 😉
A few other models slow the front down long enough to allow for another wave of low pressure to develop along it and bring some more post frontal snow into Friday. The GFS Ensembles…
The Canadian Model is in a similar camp…
Is it too much to ask to get the models to all show the same thing? Just once? Either way… you see the snow chances I have been harping on actually showing up on the models.
Remember the weekend clipper? The GFS is digging this system MUCH more than the rest of the models and actually blows this up into a winter storm around here Sunday and Monday. Look at the snowfall forecast from the morning run…
The latest run of the model is showing something very similar. So, that’s back to back runs of the GFS showing a storm Sunday into Monday. It doesn’t have many friends right now, so let’s see if it can find one with the evening model runs.
Oh yeah… check out the severe cold engulfing Canada and slowly dropping southward into the states next week…
If you’re playing along at home… that’s almost -40c air showing up at 850mb in Canada.
That’s all I have for you this evening. Wow… I made a lot of maps for you guys for an evening update. Your friendly weather dude must be liking the pattern ahead! 😉
Have a great evening and take care.
Anxiously waiting for the snow map and hoping that there’s actually a need for one…. Not feeling too good about it though, to be honest.
Am I the only one not seeing accumulating snow thursday night? When does the man for thurs and the 18z gfs come out?
*nam
First off, both the 18z NAM and GFS are out and available to view now. As for the snow, the Thu/Fri time frame is looking like another snow shower/squall type day with minor accumulations. It may not add up to much, but remember that it didn’t take much to cause massive problems and headaches on area roads and highways last week…
And Chris, the Sun system being advertised by the GFS sure does look interesting. Something to watch…
Bought some firewood a month ago and finally get to use it. The only reasons it been March weather lately is the firewood purchase. Sorry!!!
😀
bring on the snow!
axle-high to a ferris wheel!
Sears tower high!!!
CB, thanks for the terrific update! Looking forward to seeing what happens.
Ready for some snow, I am having snow withdrawals. London had rain this morning with falling temps all day, I am getting anxious. Love this blog!
I sure hope we get an old school type snow this winter. My kids have never seen one. They’ve only seen what folks seem to call “ankle biters”. They are 14 and 12 .
Only 71 days until Spring. I must admit though the thought of possible snow is kinda exciting. Just one storm and that’s it please.
So does that smiley face at the end mean you’re joking about liking the upcoming weather pattern? 🙂 Also, could someone tell me what “that’s almost -40c air showing up at 850mb in Canada” means besides just saying cold? My guess would be temps of -40 celsius at a certain height in the atmosphere or something and if so, what height? I really don’t have a clue myself.
-40C at 5,000′
It’s a large lobe that will be tapped into (modified a bit as it heads this way) over the coming weeks in the form of frequent intrusions of COLD into the N and E US.
Hope this helps! 🙂
certainly not seeing a lot of precip. Not going to put the snow blade on just yet! However it is starting to seem like it may get exciting in the next couple weeks. Here comes winter folks:)
When can we look for your “Snowfall Map” Chris?
When will the nam allow us to see thursdays lookout? Tonight what time?
Confused! I am not weather savy. Is it looking like a good snow for us around Laurel/Jackson counties?????
Well well.. I was wrong. 18Z run of the op. GFS model maintains the idea of a southern branch storm that would bring snow to KY late this weekend. Hmm.. that’s very interesting indeed, considering that cold 2M air would already be in place from the front passage on Friday.
I sure hope this evolving pattern produces some good snows! It would be nice to see the the storm pan out!
the GFS storm pan out
Chris, I would be so grateful if you could reply back on this comment and let me know if there is any hope for Franklin County to see the slightest bit of measureable snowfall for Thursday-Friday time frame and if there is any hope for a snow day Friday. I am a teacher there and really could use a day to plan on Friday!!!
Jj this probably doesn’t mean much with me saying it, but the timing of this light snow will make for dangerous travel. Sorry I can’t help more.
I think you’re right! Nightime with pretty cold temps…anything that falls should stick. Thanks for reminding me! Now, if we could just here CB’s input on the matter….
Thanks Chris for all the time and effort you put into this blog, your the only weather dude we listen to. Btw if you need any help with your new site let me know, I talked to you about this last year at Keenland I’d be glad to help you out or give you some pointers, love your new look!!
Thursday/Friday will be an inch if that.
As far as the GFS, seems that if we are going to diss it when it looks bad, we should also diss it when it looks good 🙂
BTW, after posting messages on the Droid Razr and Toshiba Thrive (powerful- for a phone and tablet), seems the new site is a resource hog, compared to the previous site. On my laptop and desktop it is fine, but they are not low powered devices. VERY laggy when typing.
I agree with your earlier comment Bubba. I do like the new site and all of the new resources but I do miss the blue and white colors for the comment section. I cannot really explain why I liked it better-just did. LOL. The new site looks great-just miss that part.
Well, the good news is I will post less, since this site is respectfully a resource hogging mess. Not sure if it is the ads on the left or what, but something is not kosher.
CB, please get your site mananager to see why. I have been using phone and tablets for a few years on your blog with no issues until now.
Love the new website! Its still my homepage as I read your comments often.
Thanks my favorite weather dude 🙂
Hey all – just got this post from Old Man Winter …
“Dear Kentucky snow lovers. I know you’ve been wanting me to blow some snow down your way, but there’s a problem with that…
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/alaska-town-buried-18-feet-snow-national-guardsmen-recruited-article-1.1003400
You may not be aware, but there are a fixed number of snowflakes in my arsenal. Alaska won’t share, and I am fresh out. I’m sorry, but I don’t even have enough for Minnesota right now, let alone Kentucky.
Thanks for understanding. I’ll see you next year.”
Move along, nothing to see here. Its just spam.
😀
Is it just me, or is Brent Mussburger annoying? Watching the BCS championship, but BM keeps saying honey badger.
OOz GFS says forget snow. 12z/18z runs were mere jokes. :/ Sad day…
So much for that snow. I say we make a pledge to never mention a model farther than two days away. It just gets peoples hopes up for nothing lol
Very seldom happens but will we have to worry about ice on the roads in the morning because of freezing temps and the fog?
“If you’re playing along at home… that’s almost -40c air showing up at 850mb in Canada.”
I’m full of useless information…. Could have just said -40 degrees. That’s the one temp that is the same in Fahrenheit as it is in Celsius.
