Good Tuesday everyone and welcome to the last day of Meteorological Spring. It has been one of the wettest and wildest springs on record across the state and for much of the country. It’s fitting this our spring of discontent is ending on a heat wave.
Spring 2011 will go down as one of the wettest on record for many cities. Both Lexington and Louisville are wrapping up their second rainiest springs on record. The severe weather season goes without saying as the numbers are off the charts this season.
Why not go ahead and wrap up this crazy spring with one of the greatest May heat waves in a long, long time? Memorial Day featured temps in the low and mid 90s for many areas and we are likely to be back there today.
Current Temps
Factor in the high humidity levels and we will be talking about a “feels like” temp in the upper 90s at times. This really is a heart of summer pattern and, just like summer, we can fire up an isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorm. You can see if we get one here…
A weak cold front will make a run at us Wednesday and this is likely to knock our temps down into the upper 80s to near 90. You can see how some cooler air trying to move in from the northwest here on the European Model…
This should ignite some scattered storms as the front slows down and puts the brakes on. It will then slowly lift back to the north by the end of the week meaning a stray storm or two will be possible each day through Friday.
As it moves northward… temps should soar again with 90 or better possible to start the weekend. This shot of heat will likely be cut off at the pass by another weak front diving in from the northwest late weekend into early next week. This should send the heat ridge back into the plains states…
That may set up a pattern where some storms roll in from the northwest as the heat tries to build back in for the middle of next week.
This is likely to ensure us of a warmer than normal June… but one month does NOT make a Summer and I fully expect this summer to go in reverse from how things start. ![]()
I hope to have the summer forecast online later tonight or Wednesday so be looking for it.
Have a great Tuesday and take care.

If this is the hottest it gets all Summer, that’ll be fine with me. Louisville tied a 116 year old record yesterday, and that’s with wet soil (where there is soil). Can you imagine what kind of numbers we’d be putting up if the ground was bone dry? Geez.
This will go down as the “Backwards” Summer bank on it. By mid July and into Aug we go much below normal in temps.

You think? Are cooler temps going to be accompanied by rain/storms?
Will we see anymore pronounced periods of thunderstorms coming up?
Chris, scorcher certainly is the proper word to describe the weather. But the weekend was still beautiful! Nice to see, after so much cool and wet weather.
Guess we should be ready for this as tomorrow starts meteroligical summer…
have a GREAT Tuesday, everyone! Thanks, Chris, for all you do.
Ugh, this is too hot for me!
Looking forward to the extended summer forcast.
This weather this year is strangely fun. Cool and stormy, a few hot days, cool and stormy. Then we hit June and we have this heat even with the wet ground. Does that dry things out and effect the rest of the summer? The west is staying cooler. When that pushes east we should get some storms and that will cool stuff down again. You have to wonder the effect of this cooler summer on the winter to come. Could we be in for a really “nice” winter (for those who like cold and snow)?
Todd Borek just made his first annual “it feels like New Orleans in July out there” on the WKYT noon news. I was in New Orleans over the weekend. Trust me Todd, not a valid comparison.
Woo hoo! First day of meteorological summer tomorrow! My favorite season. It has been a bit warm and muggy the past few days, though. I could stand for it to be a tad cooler. Looking forward to the summer forecast, Chris.
Here is AccuWeathers Summer Forecast: http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/50009/the-accuweathercom-2011-summer-1.asp
I hate Kewntucky’s location cause we always never get a direct answer. We have different things affecting KY in all three main areas they talk about. GreatLakes/Ohio Valley, Northeast, and Southeast all show somthing different. Lol.

Wow its not even June First yet and people are already complaining about it being too hot. LOL This is nothing!! Id really hate to see the comments if we were to actually break 100 lol Id personally like to see 105-110 then people would really have valid complaints about the heat. I lived in Arizona for 4 years and 120 was the point where we would start complaining about the heat. This temp of 90-95 is just a good start to me!!
I sure cannot complain. Weather is out of my control. Looks like the accuweather summer forecast calls for a lot of places to be warmer than normal. Big change from about a month or so ago when most of these places where shown as possibly being cooler or average this summer. Looks like the heat will push north and hold the cool back. Amazing how the weather changes so fast. Of course, these predictions could prove to be wrong as it is hard to put a good finger on a long range forecast. To many variables and a little change now can equal big changes later.
Yes, I expect more than normal precip and storms.
