Good evening, everyone. We are now upgrading to a WINTER STORM ALERT for Sunday and Monday. This is a potent winter storm rolling in here and it’s going to bring significant amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

A Winter Storm WATCH is now out for just about the entire state except for a few counties in the far southwest. Here’s a look at the watch…

This is a very complicated forecast because we are dealing with all 4 precipitation types with this storm. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain will all show up.  Here’s the First Call For Ice and Snowfall…

That’s just the initial look at how this thing may play out and I will make changes with additional updates.

Here’s what the NWS out of Louisville is thinking…

The forecast models continue to hold pretty darn steady with this system as the EURO and Canadian models are in pretty good agreement. Here’s what the EURO is seeting…

The Short Range Canadian is in pretty good agreement but has a big band of thumping snow going from west to east on the leading edge of this Sunday. Not sure about that….

The GFS continues to be the farthest north with the entire system, but it keeps coming back into better agreement with the other models. Notice the snows have expanded farther south into Kentucky…

The UKMET doesn’t have totals of all forms of winter precipitation and only shows snow. I’m not focusing on amounts with this as much as I’m looking at the placement…

Winds will gust to 30mph at times behind this low Sunday night and Monday. With snow and ice on trees and powerlines, this may cause additional issues.

Bitterly cold temps follow this with the chance at 0 by Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Another snow maker is lurking for late next week.

I may drop by for another update this evening and I will have the latest on WKYT News on the CW Lexington at 10 and on WKYT at 11. Enjoy the evening and take care.
