Good evening, folks. It’s full steam ahead toward the weekend and another very harsh winter weather pattern ready to engulf the region. This comes with an increasing snow threat for parts of the state on Sunday with the coldest air of the winter, so far, to follow.
The arctic front moving in Saturday brings rain ahead of it with crashing temps right behind the front. That temp crash could ice things up pretty good Saturday night as we watch for a wave of low pressure to develop along this arctic boundary just to our east.
The Canadian Models have been on this for days and they continue to grow more impressive as we get closer. The late day run of the Short Range Canadian has a swath of heavy snow across much of Kentucky. This animation starts Saturday afternoon and goes through 1am Monday…
The GFS is seeing this wave of low pressure better and better as we get closer. As of now, the GFS puts down several inches of snow across the southeast but we are watching to see if this whole scenario trends stronger and farther west…
The EURO is also seeing this a touch better with a broader area of light snow in central and eastern Kentucky…
This may be one of those systems where the models all of a sudden go BAM with. If you’re a regular here at KWC, you know this system has been on our radar for a while now. As always, we shall see.
Regardless of what happens with this, brutally cold temps move in later Sunday and last through much of next week. Lows can go below zero from Monday through Wednesday mornings with wind chills reaching dangerous levels.
The EURO wind chill forecast from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning is absolutely wicked…
It stays in the wicked category from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning…
This cold is likely to keep the Wednesday system to our south with a possible bigger threat coming with the low behind it Thursday and Friday.
As I look at this pattern through the end of the month into week one of February, I would be surprised if we aren’t hit by another full blown winter storm or two.
I’ll have a full update later tonight. Have a good one and take care.
