Good afternoon, everyone. It was a brutally cold morning across Kentucky and surrounding areas and this bitter cold continues for a few more days. This means our Frozen Pipes ALERT continues through Wednesday.
As expected, morning lows checked in from -5 to 5 for much of Kentucky on the Kentucky Mesonet sites…
A friendly reminder that the American Models like the NAM and GFS said temps wouldn’t get to 0 or below. These models have pretty big issues as they can’t see cold or accurately depict winter weather systems.
Meanwhile, the EURO and Canadian Models were spot on with temps this morning. If we just use the EURO going forward, here’s what it shows for lows tonight…
It still has some negative numbers in the northeast, but it’s up some for the rest of the region because of some clouds rolling in. Those clouds may spit out some light snow and flurries.
Wind chills are still brutal on Tuesday. Check out the numbers from 8am through 11pm…
This sets the stage for what is likely to be the coldest morning of the entire winter on Wednesday. Lows can go well below zero over the snow pack…
Wind chills can reach -15 or lower for some areas…
Temps rebound by Thursday as the bitter cold ends. This is ahead of a system that’s set to bring some light snow in here by Thursday night and Friday…
The pattern after this will feature cold air setting up shop from west to east across the northern half of the country. At the same time, we see several storm systems rolling from west to east and those may put our region in the line of fire for more winter weather later this weekend into early next week.
The models are just now starting to see this potential…

I’ll try to throw you another update later this evening. Make it a great MLK Day and take care.
I still don’t trust the KLEX thermometer… especially when we have a bitter cold day like this…where both mesonets are still in the single digits and KLEX is at 12… 4 degree difference… And yet this morning, the low on mestonet was 0 and KLEX was 1 .. only 1 degree difference. Unless that is just a warmer spot than the other two.. I honestly don’t know. Maybe it is really 4 degrees warmer in that particular location, while at other times it’s exactly the same as the mesonets. Oh well… who knows.
