Winter Storm ALERT Continues

Good afternoon, everyone. Our “sneaky” snow band continues to put down light accumulations as expected today as our focus shifts to the winter storm ready to plow through. This will put down several inches of snow tonight through Thursday and will also unleash bitterly cold temps.

A Winter Storm Warning continues for much of Kentucky during this time…

I still think the warning should come north by about one county and that the Winter Weather Advisory should go all the way through Cincy.

I’m making no changes to the current call for snowfall…

I will freshen this up with a Final Call for Snowfall coming later today on WKYT starting at 4pm.

As far as the models are concerned, there’s a bit of an uptick in the snow totals on many of the higher resolution models.

The GFS has been about as steady as you will find the model….

The Canadian started too low but it’s catching up to the overall idea…

The NAM is similar to the GFS but is still too sharp with the northern cutoff…

The short range Hi Res Models are seeing the potential to go above and beyond 6″ in a west to east stripe. This shows up on the Hi Res NAM…

The latest HRRR has this stripe showing up much thicker and farther to the north…

As does the RAP…

And a few versions of the WRF model…

This is a HIGH IMPACT winter storm in terms of travel tonight through early Thursday. Most schools will be out the rest of the week as bitterly cold air causes more winter misery through the start of the weekend. Lows will flirt with 0 by Friday morning with wind chills going below 0 Wednesday night through Friday morning.

Updates later today. As usual, I leave you with your tracking tools including our Kentucky Weather Cams to watch the wild weather across entire region…

Enjoy the day and take care.

My county is consistently in all of the models to get 4 to 6 inches (with the possibility of 8+ inches) but we are under a Winter Weather Advisory for 2 to 4 inches of snow?!!? 4 inches meets the criteria for Winter Storm Warning where I live, so I have no idea why my area (Putnam & Kanawha Counties in WV) are under Winter Weather Advisories & not Winter Storm Warnings.
