Good Friday and Happy Kentucky Oaks Day. We are kicking off our big weekend with the threat for more in the way of strong to severe storms. As a matter of fact, this threat lingers into Derby Day, along with the increasing potential for some hefty rainfall totals.

Our Friday features temps reaching the upper 70s to low 80s with a mix of sun and clouds. Strong southwest winds will be gusting as a complex or two of thunderstorms develops across western Kentucky and rolls to the east and northeast.

These storms may bring a decent damaging wind threat along for the ride and the Storm Prediction Center is placing much of the region in in the Marginal Risk to Enhanced Risk for severe storms today…

The tornado threat continues to be pretty low today…

As I mentioned, the potential for damaging wind is the top dog for yet another day…

Pockets of large hail have been common this week and today will be no different…

The potential for a few severe storms looks to continue on Derby Day as low pressure spins in from the west. Spiraling bands of showers and storms will flare up across central and eastern Kentucky and some of these may contain damaging winds and large hail. I’ve seen similar cases give us some rotating storms and that’s something we will have to monitor.

Here’s the Kentucky Derby Saturday Severe Weather Outlook…

Heavy rainfall is also going to be a player Saturday into Sunday as this slow low spins through the region. This gives us the potential for some local flooding and flash flooding issues…

Cool winds will be noted with this system before it lifts out of the area late Monday and Tuesday. From there, it will likely get replaced by another slow-moving system for the second half of next week and that one may keep action going into the following week…

The models are growing more concerning with the rainfall numbers over the next few weeks…

As a matter of fact, the EURO Weeklies now have a healthy signal for above normal rains going all the way into the middle of June..

I’ll be on WKYT-TV for any severe weather coverage. As always, I leave you guys with your severe weather tracking tools…
