Good Thursday, everyone. We have waves of light to moderate snow pushing across the state today into early Saturday. This will leave behind the first widespread snowfall of the season, causing travel issues along the way. While this isn’t a big snow by any means, it will have a decent impact throughout the entire region.
Some quick highlights:
- Today’s snow comes at us in waves, impacting different parts of the state at different times.
- The first wave arrives this morning impacting the northern two-thirds of the state. The south and southeast has to wait a little bit for the snow to arrive.
- The next wave fires up this afternoon and impacts much of the state through the evening.
- Another band of light snow then develops across the central and east later this evening into the wee hours of Friday morning.
- Moral of the story, all the snow does not come at once and you may see breaks in the radar between each wave.
- How much will fall? This won’t be a perfect snow forecast (no such thing), but here’s my best stab at the totals into Friday morning…
- Roads will become slick and a few may be snow covered at times. Delays and cancellations should be plentiful today and Friday.
- The southern storm system may swipe southeastern Kentucky with some snow early Saturday. It’s a close call either way.
- Bitterly cold air moves in for the weekend with highs from Friday through Sunday in the upper teens and low 20s. Overnight lows drop into the single digits, with an outside shot for some of the traditional cold spots seeing zero or a touch below.
We see a brief temp spike early next week, but that could be followed by a big drop and more winter weather. Here’s the European for Tuesday and Wednesday…
The Canadian is similar with another system following that up…
Let’s get back to today’s system and track the light snowfall across the region…

I will have updates later today. Make it a great day and take care.
Verga storm so far in the metro
Which metro? In Lex I’m seeing very light snow, like EXTREMELY light – but it is snowing – but that radar looks so weak….I don’t know if other development is to occur or not. I know Chris said in waves – but if this is the first wave, it looks terribly weak on radar.
MetroLou….I know what you mean. Radar does show snow way back through Illinois.
Very precarious situation on the left edge of the Friday system for Knoxville/East TN. Looks like NAM and GFS have both shifted north/west a bit. Just one more shift and we could be in play. Very sharp cutoffs.
Corbin maybe has a chance, but would take a Independence Day 2 ludicrous level shift for anywhere north. That movie was ludicrous BTW- in a bad way.
Loved the first – wish I could unsee the second.
Snow showing up on radar in Huntington but not a drop in the sky. Cold as all get out though.
Enjoy your day, friends.
How much snow is expected in Ashland by 3pm?
Is the weekend storm now only coastal and a no-go for KY at all? Snow coming down north of Ohio looks lovely this morning.
Looks like around an inch and isolated pockets of 1.5 inches statewide.let’s wait for a real snow.
I think it would be a great idea for you to start your own blog and see how many followers you get!
^^^ 🙂
EF will probably say anything higher is drifting 😉
Im not happy I cannot find the ignore the ignorance button
More EF5 gibberish.
Ground is cover here in far western,ky. Still coming down in moderate fashion
Ready for the snow in Lextown. I’m glad Chris is pointing to more chances down the road!
The models are cruel. Recall the weekend was supposed to be the big chance a week out and now this small snow is the biggie.
“Heavy dusting” and still coming down in Rodger’s backyard this morning. Close to the back end of first wave and hoping the second wave doesn’t miss. Certainly not a big snow but better than nothing. Rodger in Dodger
Still looking for the 1st flake nothing but virga for a while now
Same here Andy. Very discouraging considering you and I were on the lower end of totals to start with.
No snow falling yet in London. I keep eagerly looking out the window waiting for a few snow flakes. Thanks so much for the update Chris. Have a great snowy day!!
I’m throwing the Towel, maybe late Jan/Feb will be better
Looks like a nice little nuisance snow today. Hopefully next week will bring the real goods and not ice, as the Canadian is showing. To bad it has to warm up again. We may just be stuck in this pattern the rest of winter. A few cold days and a warm up. Rinse and repeat.
That was what Bailey said in his prognostication for the winter.
Kids were out. But no sledding. Yet…
As annoying as you think I am.I’m obviously right.Truth stinks somtimes. We will get a big snow in early feb.
You are not right, just annoying, foolish and arrogant.
Rodger finds himself under one of those precious heavier bands. Picked up a quick inch at his house! Rodger in Dodger
New 12Z NAM getting interesting for southeastern Ky this weekend. Will be interesting to see the 12Z GFS.
Starting to snow already lightly in Pikeville.
12Z 4K NAM looking very interesting for southern counties boarding Tennessee (as well as East Tennessee) Fri-Sat. Very interesting!!
Do you have a map you can share?
Can you post a link

Looked at it thanks a bunch. Just a 50-100 mile shift NW would deliver a pretty good blow to E SE KY. NAM is usually good in short range.
If we could get that disturbance to merge sooner BINGO
Thelma Lou says bring it on! That first shot looks very favorable for our neck of the woods in Wayne County, maybe it’ll hold up.
Ground covered here in greenup and looks like we got some heavier bands on the way
Heavy snow in London.
What does England have to do with our weather?! 🙂
With just a smidge over 1″ so far in Valley Station, another moderate band is approaching before tapering off for a bit…
Zzzzzzzzz
Typical negative nancy.
Better measure as soon as it lets up a little, already melting on my driveway and cars thanks to daylight, even though 25 degrees. 1.3″ so far on snow board in Valley Station.
MIke, you beat me so far!
right at exactly 1″ on my deck in Eastwood, about a mile east of Valhalla.
You are correct, too. The snow on the roads is completely gone.
CB, so far the winter has panned out as your outlook stated. Watch out for models seducing you into big snow. This weekend is a good example. The models looked good a week out.
“We see a brief temp spike early next week, but that could be followed by a big drop and more winter weather” You stated this also in your outlook and also not much snow- panning out so far. Stay frosty!
Case
Do not no where “Case” came from….
Week out snow models are eviiil!
The models always look good a week out.
Uncanny too that almost always they are bullish for snow and then a few days out or so they are just BS. Very very rarely the other way around.
Appears that the GFS and Nam both have NW shift for southern event pushing snow back into east TN and SE KY as of the 12z runs..
Noticed that too. Very anxious to see what they show tonight.
How much of a shift do we need to get in on the action.
Hopefully it shifts a lot!
Band of snow setting up literally 2 miles south of my house between the Watterson and Gene Snyder. Most of Lou in a Donut hole for the rest of the way.
Close to 3 inches of snow already in southern Perry County.
Driving through Perry and Knott on ky 80 the roads are slick..Starting snowing about 8:30.. Looks like around 2 inches and still coming down at a moderate clip..Think this is gonna be an overachiever in these parts..
Heavy snow falling here in greenup… Got a good.inch on the ground so far
Sun is shining in Monticello for the past 15 minutes. Thelma Lou is rather confused.
Have probably near 2 inches in Eubank and got to Somerset and there is hardly any snow on the ground
Looks like the heaviest band set up farther south (and quicker) than models thought.. It’s bad here in southeast Ky. Wrecks everywhere, cars stranded, school buses with kids stuck. Tough day for emergency responders.,
Looking at the earlier Nam 3km model it shows 7-8 inches creeping into parts of Letcher and Harlan on the Tenn. border..
This is for Saturday..
Lol..Virginia border
Even though radar has shown snow over my area all morning, Middlesboro has yet to see the first flake. Super virga!!! Actually as I write this the sun has just come out.
Oh well, NAM and the Canadian showing us getting a bit of action from the Fri-Sat southern system.
this was just posted by BG over at WAVE

So far, about 2 inches in southern Pike County.

Pouring the snow in Clay county. We got about 3 inches earlier today from the first wave that went through.
