Good afternoon, everyone. The first round of snow was a big time overachiever across parts of the region. This dropped a good 2″-3″ across parts of the southeast, with more to come for the entire region.
I mentioned the snows coming in waves and that still looks to be the case. The southwestern part of the state gets the least in all this, but that was the forecast all along.
With these additional waves coming in through tonight, most (not all) areas should hit the snow range we have been talking about. Areas in southeastern Kentucky are now very likely to pick up totals greater than 4″ before all is said and done. That’s actually warning criteria snow.
What about the next system developing across the south Friday into Saturday? This continues to edge a bit farther west and north, which is why I have never written this thing off. The current model consensus is for some additional accumulations across southeastern Kentucky.
This is the NAM 24 hour snowfall forecast from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon…
The NAM then says Hello, east coast…
Back here in Kentucky, bitterly cold air will dominate the weekend forecast with high teens and low 20s by day and single digit lows at night. There is a slight chance for a snow shower or flurry on Sunday as the flow is off the Great Lakes for a time.
Here are the tracking toys of the day…

Make it a great afternoon and take care.
wouldn’t be surprised to see much of the state getting some flurries tomorrow, perhaps even a dusting to .5″ in central KY?
Seems the general 1-3″ totals forecasted will verify for much of the state, by the time this second wave is finished.
Still waiting for our first flake to fall here in Middlesboro, even with that full radar. Virga wins thus far. Still hopes for later tonight as well as Fri-Sat southern storm inching ever so close by.
We had snow on elevated surfaces in Knox until it stopped. The untreated roads (which would be all of them) in Knox were covered briefly with snow. The ground temps are still above freezing and what very little we did get is gone.
We received between 1/4 and 1/2 here in Harlan before lunch but melted except for higher elevations! We barely missed the first round to our North but should get more tonight.
Weekend storm is definitely looking more interesting for our corner of the state!!
Sorry to hear Troy. Here in the Ville we picked up a quick 1/2 to 3/4 in which melted due to sun coming out in donut hole. Now 2nd wave pushing in and it looks more impressive than this mornings wave. Might get a solid 2″s here in Louisville.
Huh??? 1.2 so far in Louisville none melted where I was at
appears Russia might have interfered with the weather models, still hopeful the southern storm will swipe SE KY though..
LoL 😀
Love it. Always good to have a sense of humor when the snow disappoints!
Still waiting for some snow in Monticello
looks like dome has been busted down at southeastern part of state compare to the rest of state.
Nope
Far SE KY got almost nothing this morning but tonight and, especially the weekend, could change that!
Just as well the big snow missed us. Scenic snow tends to be better on the back than heavy shoveling 🙂
Funny how when the kids grown up perspective changes on big snow…. Of course digging out of three event the last two winters might be part of it.
You’re so right BubbaG..Kid’s are grown and now there driving in this mess..One will always worry..Also living on a very steep incline one will curse snow as you get older..I am quickly becoming a “Grumpy ole man” when it comes to snow..
Only a mild dusting in Ashland. Any chance of still reaching the 2-4 inches?
Um yeah…look at the radar bro.
No offense, but I’ve been looking at the radar with snow on us for the last 3 hours and the ground barely has any snow on it lol
True dat. Just looking at the cams you can tell a lot of areas are dustings or a little more. Light snow rolls that way.
So far anyway.
I have an inch and a half in Covington and it’s pouring steady to moderate snow. Once the sun starts setting, sublimation and evaporation will stop and you’ll get your 2+ inches.
I thought southeast was supposed to be last to get snow and they’ve already overachieved? Hmmm. Definitely underachieved so far in Lexington. Still hopeful to get maybe an inch.
Virga, ankle biter, donut hole, blowtorch, old school, DOME, etc, etc…
Looking at the traffic cameras and using the word overachievier??Hmmmm
Placement, placement, placement 😉 🙂
Looks like a big bust in Monticello area…I counted 13 flakes total & they were tiny ones at that.
The energy barely missed us southern border counties to the north but tonight and (POSSIBLY) the weekend storm might change that.
Well, didn’t end up being enough to sled in. But the kids enjoyed their day off. Looks like it will be back to the grind tomorrow. And sadly it looks like 50’s or warmer and rain for the next couple weeks. The sleds will have to wait….
Where are you located? The more east, the more chance for a few inches. If on the ground at the same time, of course.
Central KY, just south of Lex
A good 2 inches in PIkeville I heard hazard got 4 inches
Last report out of Perry county, Dwarf had 3.3″ so far, definitely not one of the ‘smaller’ totals in the region.
At least two inches in southern IN and still coming down. Wish Saturday’s storm would come this way…
Just not happening in Lexington. Definitely the heavier snows are further north than forecast. Shift happens, I guess.
Shift is good
If makes easier to drive home on 75, that is good 🙂
Right at 2″ on my snowboard in Valley Station currently. I might cheat a little and say we have 2.1″ for the day due to some melting and packing…should have cleaned off snowboard after earlier accumulation.
Missed the mark with the 2-4 call in the Frankfort to Lex corridor for sure, been flurried to death though lol…yawn
Definitely missed in the ashland area as well!
Maybe I spoke 2 soon! Snowing pretty good now!
Nice snow going in Lexington. Moderate to heavy?
Moderate would be a stretch and it’s ending now. Radar shows little to nothing behind it unless something forms out of nowhere. Can’t be believe all the counties around Fayette cancelled school today.
Radar shows one blob coming toward Paducah then nothing until Wichita. With maybe a tenth of inch on the south side of Lexington, I think this qualifies as a busted forecast here.
Sorry you missed out Allen. We’ve got a little over an inch and looks like a shot at a little more later. Downtown Lexington.
Rodas are pretty slick now as well.
I have close to 2 inches in southern Scott County. Roads were closed, wrecks everywhere. Roads were awful when I left at 6:45 this morning. There would have been no reason to have school, the road conditions were ridiculous.
Really? With all the wrecks in and around the area, including the interstate (1st cleaned roads) & no missed days to this point, you’re surprised the school systems played it safe? Rough job to be the one to decide, and one where everyone is never happy about the decision made.
Looks like the heavier snow is in Ohio, a little farther north than predicted but not not unexpected. My area near Huntington WV has less than an inch. We might pick up a little more after dark unless the flurries stop.
Winter storm WATCHES now out for all east TN..3-5″ locally higher amounts tomorrow-sat
Send it up here 😉
I was willing to share mine LoL
Snow going north is what I was trying to tell you yesterday.
You’re an idiot…it stayed in ky
1-2″ in southern OH; a 3″ total near Dayton.
1-3″ common around Louisville Metro.
2-4″ in eastern Kentucky. It appears everyone got in on some snow. So what snow are you talking about going north
Had at least 2 inches here. It is snowing fairly heavy again. And I was reading there would be a wave of snow overnight come in. So might just get to 3-4 inches on the ground. Would be more but the warm ground melted it early. Even with a decent snow rate the road was just wet with a few slushy spots. Yard was extremely wet and you could see the bottom was very slushy and melting. Should freeze up solid tonight though.
Where are you Matthew? Shows pretty much over here in Fayette County, nothing to see, go home everybody. ; )
Not even an inch here in Nelson County.
Bell and Harlan Co. Don’t let your guard down for the system tomorrow night. Biggest that system gets and we all know how they like to take that NW jog. You guys could get hammered.
Little over 4 inches here in Kermit wv
Just over three inches north of Ohio River.
Roads are covered and slick in greenup
Looking better and better for SE KY tomorrow late! All of SW VA now under winter storm watch…come on Harlan….getting close.
Especially for Bell, Harlan and Letcher counties, a track 50 miles or less to the NW could give us several inches!
Pouring in greenup….. Wow
Looks like 70’s late January and early February
Bell bottoms and Disco balls? No thanks.
You mean the infamous Winters of ’77 & ’78? I “hear tale” those were wicked! That would be great.
Those two winters were legendary. Measurable snow nearly every week starting in late Nov thru early March and several below zero temps.
You mean a lot of old people coming to KY by the end of the month???
Bust for Richmond
Don’t know where u are in richmond, but it’s pouring at my house (on the 90 exit)
All the negativity, complaining and armchair forecasting makes me laugh.
May have been last and only winter “storm” of season, ol jim b said it first….yawn zzzzz
Oh the 70s. It was in the 70s when i had my 1st pet. I was also born in the 70s
I wasn’t alive but have looked at historic data…Harlin had an 80 inch season during 77. Yes, 80 inches in the valley not high up!!#
Harlan
We have about 2 1/2 inches in Nicholas Co and still coming down pretty good at almost 8PM.
