Good evening, everyone. I wanted to drop by for an update on a very busy setup taking shape for the next week or so. It’s a pattern that gives us some wild temperature variations, which can lead to everything from thunderstorms to some ice.
Let’s begin with the surge of moisture moving in late tonight into Tuesday. With a frozen ground temps close to freezing, this could begin as a touch of freezing rain. Notice how the NAM shows that on the leading edge…
As that moves through, temps begin to increase as winds absolutely howl. Winds are a big player this week and can reach 40mph at times.
A cold front brings showers our way later Tuesday, then lifts back to the north by Wednesday. That should give us some thunder chances…
Thursday is SUPER WINDY AND MILD with temps deep into the 60s. Showers and some thunder will be noted into Thursday night as the leading edge of arctic air closes in. The numbers for Friday continue to look threatening for some ice across parts of the state…
Here’s a better look at the dramatic temps drop…
Here’s where the European has us by Friday afternoon…
Notice the magic 32 degree line digs pretty deep into Kentucky as precipitation is ongoing. That could very well mean a period of freezing rain into Friday night.
After that, we may see that front head back to the north as a warm front by Saturday night into Sunday. That could return our temps to the 60 for a day or two, ahead of another storm system.
Precipitation totals over the next week and change continue to run on the high side…

Here’s hoping the warmer air can win the battle for the entire event. We want no part of ice!
I will update things later tonight. Make it a good one and take care.
May the Ice not be with you.
Get ready for a LOT of rain. It will be all rain, nothing freezing here. Rodger in Dodger
If any area can stay above freezing through early next week, the pattern favors SE KY…we are the safest and warmest in this set-up but no one is 100% safe, especially closer to Ohio River!
We are the warmest in any setup. 😉
I agree just a lot of rain and mild temps. It’s a real downer to be a snow lover and right in the heart of Winter with these warm temps and precipitation. I guess if it was cold it would most likely be dry.
True. Warm temperatures and rain belong to late April, not January. My children are looking at all of this rain coming and they say it should be snow.
Couldn’t agree more, Jimbo. Precip in January should be SNOW! 50s & 60s with heavy rain is awful. Watch it get cold and dry again soon 🙁 Rodger in Dodger
Pkease no ice! I want frozen precious but NOT ICE please! As BubbaG said, may the ice NOT be with you…..anywhere. Thanks Chris. Counting on you for updates. Have s good Monday evening all. Did someone say there was a college football game tonight? 😉
Ha! Auto correct strikes again! Tgst was SUPPOSED to say frozen precip.
And we wonder why everyone is becoming ill with cold and flu! Crazy weather!!
Interesting, but the cold just cannot linger long anymore. As “cold” as December seemed, it was still above normal in Lexington. January will go way above normal over the next week. Since the Fall of 2015, almost every month has been above normal. This “pattern” fits with the pattern that has been set in place for over a year now. I wonder if this is the “new normal” or some kind of short-term anomaly?
Global warming provided a lot of YAWNS….yawn meter still holding at a strong 10, carry on with your weekend plans ladies and gents, just looks like it will be a wet one…..you’re welcome in advance Jeff haha
Yeah, so much crazy talk! Pfft. .Everyone knows it’s only hot at the airport and cool at all of our houses. Weather is just fine here in the hollow earth, right neighbor?
I’m a little sad that no snow is in the forecast for us, or at least not for a long while.
What happened to the “very cold” JANUARY we read about on here two weeks ago? Cold without measurable snow is BLAH
Spencerlady is right. All these head colds and things. I think germs spread around more easily in this type of weather. But there is one good thing it helps on the heating bills. At least it does mine.
Wash the salt away FTW!
