Good afternoon everyone. Freezing rain continues to skirt the bluegrass state, impacting a few areas in the west and north through Saturday. This happens as we have a huge temp gradient showing up from north to south across the region.
A Freezing Rain Advisory is out for a few counties along the Ohio River…
South of that, showers will be common through tonight and Saturday. Thermometers won’t fluctuate much at all into the coming weekend. The south stays much milder than the north.
The flow next week becomes southwesterly and leads to additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms coming our way. This can lead to additional hefty rain totals through next weekend…

After we get through that wet period, winter surges back into the region. This looks to take control of the pattern for the end of the month and into February. Blah Blah Blah. I’m not a fan of these back loaded winters that carry into early spring, but that’s what’s happened a lot recently and should happen again this year.
I will get more in depth on that later this evening and tonight.
Enjoy your gloomy Friday afternoon and take care.
Virtually every indicator says cold and opportunity toward late month and into February. We might just hit the snow lottery after all.
Too bad all the moisture is here while it’s warm the next week – then when the cold returns, since the atmosphere has been through the ringer – it will probably take it a while to reload for another storm – hopefully by the time that happens it will still be cold enough for snow. I can’t understand why you consider a cold/snowy February a “late winter” – I wouldn’t even consider a cold/snowy first half of March a late winter….but anything after that would be.
I completely agree it’s supposed to be cold/snowy in February. A late winter is middle March and on. We have had a total of .5” of snow here in Berea lol Been a pitiful winter so far honestly.
Yep! Most of the moisture is gone when it hits 32 degrees (of course). The “price” for snow lovers in Fencetucky.
Placing my bets on CB’s winter outlook- even though he might deviate 😉 We appear more likely to see a big ice event rather than snow, so if a big system is targeting Kentucky- watch out!
My bet is on his winter forecast as well, which means it’s over at the end of this week for anything significant except for the “bold” ice storm. There’s no need to worry about models and such going forward because it’s already settled, so I don’t know why everyone is so worried now. I’m pleased to not have to shovel any snow this winter honestly. Have some faith in the man that it’s not going to happen, right?
Also, sorry anyone has to get that ice but I’m still happy it wasn’t us.
Im with CB come February I’m ready for Spring. I really believe snow in earnest will be making a return late January into February all signs pointing that way. A big pattern shift is getting ready to take place this is not a gut feeling or I hope so, this pattern shift is pretty much a given.
Just how long it hangs around is not though. Hopefully it settles in this time and we can get a few storms to give us some potential for the white stuff. I still 1000lbs of salt on my truck. I need it to snow.
I’m pretty confident you’ll get your wish
Yep, the ratio is 2:1. One inch of salt for each half inch of snow 🙂
HA!
Rodger thinks it’s simply Mr Bailey’s preference that spring starts in Feb but, yes, we’ve seen many February and even March big snows. Owensboro got 12″ of snow that started out as a heavy sleet event March 19-20 in about 1994. Give Rodger two 6″+ snow events in the next six weeks and he’d be happy! Rodger in Dodger
The blizzard of 93 (March Super Storm) crippled Eastern KY and many, many other areas.
We are over do as we have not really had nothing major in March in most of the state for many years now!
Two winters ago we got a big snow on March 3rd 🙂
Richmond got about 18″ of heavy wet stuff.
Yeah, I remember that but was thinking it was the last day of February…that one missed SE KY with only about 2 inches in my area which didn’t make it stand out for me:)
The big one was March 4, 2015. Southeastern Ohio had 14-15 inches.
It’s only three weeks into winter, and it’s not uncommon to go without snow in December. Spring does not start until March 20, plenty of time for snow and winter weather. Just as we can experience summer like weather well into October, winter-like weather can happen even into April.
1988 Campbell county got 5 inches of snow on march 31st
1988, florence got about 1 inch of snow on 1st satuay Of may
1989
Remember kids, people are only “armchair whatevers” when they disagree with you. Otherwise, they are part of the whatever good ole bandwagons you’re helping to circle. “but muh outgroup derogation!”.
In more serious news, have a drink and toast the poor areas being absolutely pummeled with ice because it could have been us instead.
Keep an eye out for any charitable drives started by reputable groups giving DIRECTLY to the affected areas. I say that in caps because the Red Cross is notorious for advertising for help based on disasters and then just stockpiling it for the future. Do your own research.
If you know someone who works repairing electrical lines, see if they need anything before they likely head off to the west to work! Everyday heroes, they just don’t get cool lights and sirens like Hamlin. 😉
Oklahoma area and north east of that is apparently is getting throttled with ice through all of tomorrow.
A majority of complainers here ARE just armchair wannabes. Don’t like my opinion? Too bad.
I’ll go with Chris on his backloaded winter update. He’s had a great track record so far!
I’m thinking late Jan-Early Feb looks good for some snow. In the meantime we are working on the ark at my house. 60’s return next week. That should be fun!
U.S. has 2nd warmest year on record for 2016, behind only 2012
