Good Friday, everyone. We have a very active weather day taking shape across Kentucky. Record high temperatures will give way to the threat for strong and severe thunderstorms rolling through the region this evening.
Here’s a breakdown of the day:
- Record high temps of 75-80 degrees will be possible this afternoon.
- This could be one of the top 5 warmest winter days on record for the state
- Winds today will be gusty between 30mph and 40mph at times
- A squall line of thunderstorms will develop across western Kentucky by late afternoon into the early evening
- That line races eastward with the main impact from 8pm-2am
- Damaging wind will be the main threat, with a local tornado threat a possibility
It’s a WKYT First Alert Severe Weather Day, so make us your one stop source for your storm tracking needs on TV.
As always, I have the blog set up to be your online source…
Today’s risk area
I will update things later today. Enjoy the summer air and take care.
LETS GET READY FOR A RIDE!!!
Already 66° in Owensboro as I type this. Yikes.
Not much change from what Chris, the Storm Prediction Center, etc, have been predicting for today’s thunderstorm threat. While the tornado risk is indeed forecast to be low relative to the strong damaging wind risk, this will still be a night event so it’s all the more important to have indoor early warning devices ready.
The Weather Channel said that Milwaukee hit 71 the other day, the first time in recorded history that Milwaukee has ever hit 70 or higher in February. Crazy. Now parts of Wisconsin are going to be dealt a crippling snow, even by Wisconsin standards where they are use to winter wx.
I am ready for some Spring storms. Be safe today y’all!
Well. it is a Threat Mode 😉 Just not the kind the snow fans like.
There’s always the ‘letdown threat’ as well for severe weather, very similar to winter weather. But, there has been a consistent signal since earlier this week supporting a regional impact from damaging thunderstorm winds. Just the feel, the look, the smell, of the current morning conditions reminds me of those days that lead to severe weather later in the day.
Agreed Mike
Let downs for severe storms IMO is a very good thing 🙂
This may be the only good way to enthusiastically say bring on The Tornadoes 😉

Already up to 70 after a low of 42 this morning in Perry co..
I love lamp. Phoenix. Oh, sorry… I thought people just randomly posted useless info in the comment section…
Congratulations you just won the “tool” of the day award.
Finally someone lifted that title from Prelude LOL
Jim B, do you suffer from short man syndrome?
It’s 75 in North Central Kentucky!
77 in Nashville TN! Even if a bit too windy to eat outside at my workplace’s picnic area.
75 in Monticello KY (Wayne County)!
79 in Barbourville.
80 in Louisville … All time record high for February
5 consecutive days above 70…New February record
6 total days above 70 degrees…record
I have a dandelion growing in my yard…
I have dandelions in WV for about a week. Lots of green buds and blooms here appearing in the past week. Unlike anything I have seen in my 53 years. And I thought March of 2012 was warm.
We’ve had warmer winters before but this is crazy. Rodger in Dodger.
My forsythia is blooming!
Lucy, same here! Daffodil blooms all over, too!
So warm in Western KY…I put the top down on my convertible today!! Hard to believe it is February.
Torrential rain and a few pieces of pea size hail along with winds approaching 30-35 mph. Nothing severe therefore in Valley Station
Closing in on 1″ of rain in a very short period of time
Even if you like snow you would have had to like the last couple of days.
Very Nice Out.
Squall line just hit Berea. Hail and wind and torrential rain but not a warning issued at all. Sounded like the roof was being beaten in.
Zero to sixty, literally zero rain to full intensity a second later. Just wow.
Oh, also see CB tweet about rotation from 10 min ago. still no warning issued from NWS.
Surprised and thankful the event has been as wimpy as it has been. Would have expected a bigger impact event with the record warmth and cold colliding. Actually seems like an amicable merge overall rather than impact.
Maybe in your area. Mileage varies.
Just had alot of hail in Flatwoods, KY. Ground turned white.
