Good Wednesday, everyone. A severe weather outbreak is likely to unfold across the region this afternoon and evening. This happens as a potent storm system takes aim at the region from southwest to northeast.
Here’s a breakdown of how the day may unfold:
- Warm and windy weather will be noted today as temps make a run at 80 degrees across central and eastern Kentucky.
- Thunderstorms will explode across western and central parts of the state during the late afternoon.
- Damaging winds and very large hail will be possible with these storms.
- There is enough shear showing up for these storms to produce a few tornadoes. The greatest tornado threat looks to be across the central part of the state.
- If storms can get out on their own, a few strong tornadoes can’t be ruled out.
- The prime time for severe weather is 2pm-6pm for areas around Interstate 65, then from 4pm-midnight for the rest of central and eastern Kentucky.
- Much colder air filters in behind the storms with rain and snow showers for Thursday into early Friday. A grassy coating is even possible.
I will have the very latest on WKYT-TV and I will send out warnings and post my latest thoughts on twitter. Don’t forget to follow me: @kentuckyweather .

Stay safe and have a great day. Take care.
Very difficult and uncertain weather event. Most models out at the present do not agree. The only option is to look back at last weeks weather event. Have a safe day.
There are other options
CIPS Top 15 analogs give at least 15 other options
The sun is out it’s been out all morning in my neck of the woods which in this case is not a good thing if one is not wanting severe thunderstorms. The biggest question here is how well the dew points respond. If dew points temps stay in check below 60 (hopefully that will be the case) it should cut down on the severe threat some. If not, well it won’t be a nice day for some.
Just my CIPS Top 15 analog calculation alone places Kentucky, especially the central part, in a likely category for severe weather.
Thanks Chris. We have been lucky so far in this early spring with no severe weather to speak of. I am hoping that today plays out the same for everyone, but I am sure it likely won’t from looking at and reading this blog and other things. While I don’t pretend to be learned in the ways of weather technology, I CAN say I am learned in the way my body responds with fibromyalgia to changing barometric pressure. Today is not going to be a good one for some. Here is hoping the severe stuff stays away from everyone. But its good to know we have the best watching out for all of us! Thanks in advance Chris, and KYT team. It could be a long afternoon and evening. Lets hope not! Have a safe day everyone.
Here is the latest on the impending storm. The energy has shifted to the southeast where there are numerous tornado watches and warnings. When this occurs the chances for severe weather in our area begins to decrease. Later this afternoon, I would speculate that we could see some strong storms developing because of the unstable atmosphere. Weather models are useless when they don’t all agree. Trying to pin point where the strongest storms will be is nothing more than an educated guess. Have a safe afternoon.
We appreciate your thoughtful comments on the weather and look for them each day. Keep them coming!!
Thanks Chris. Looks like it could get ugly after while. Hoping that doesn’t happen, to anyone, but if it does, we have the best there is to keep us informed. From what I am reading, and hearing, I am afraid
someone is in for some really bad stuff. Have a pleasant and safe
afternoon and evening everyone. Thanks in advance Chris, as I feel like you are going to have a busy weather day…..
I’m guessing the storms in Georgia may suck some of the energy away from our storms?
That’s debatable might have a small part but not enough for any major changes to the forecast for our region.
Tom Ackerman blocked me on Twitter. What a pansy snowflake haha!
As to the weather, I’m ready. Stay safe, folks.
You crazy kid đŸ˜‰
Took ya long enough to figure that out. đŸ™‚
Perhaps a bit more fuel for the fire as dew point temperatures are now into the mid 60s in central Tennessee and some low 60s now entering south central Kentucky. Still some decent shear showing up.
…and now a Tornado Watch up for central TN and central KY.
Today is one of those days where you’ll wonder if your house that was built in the last decade or so was put together with actual nails or just those thin metal strips. Matchbook houses without basements, some people like to live on the edge I guess.
I’m a little nervous looking at that radar. Especially the part of Lexington I live in that seems to always get the worst of the storms. I feel so unprotected in these cheap houses!
Bailey, a heartfelt thank you for hanging out on air all night. I was so much calmer when i had to go to my hidey spot than if I had been watching the VOR. This momma appreciates you.
