Good Saturday to one and all. We have a chilly weekend underway across the bluegrass state. As a matter of fact, things are starting off downright frigid for many. Now we track clouds and an increase in showers by later Sunday. The longer range keeps showing a winter look for Thanksgiving week.
Let’s start with where we are today. Temps are deep into the 20s to begin our Saturday, with wind chills in the mid and upper teens. Clouds will filter in through the day, keeping parts of central and eastern Kentucky in the 40s for highs.
Showers move in on Sunday as temps likely stay in the 40s for many areas. This isn’t a lot of rain, but it will dampen things up pretty good into early Monday. Here are the rain totals…
Low clouds are likely to linger into Monday, giving us another chilly day. The NAM keeps most areas in the 40s…
Our next front quickly races in here on Wednesday and brings more rain to the region…
Seasonal temps continue behind this front, but a much more potent storm system will then impact our region Friday and early Saturday. This one may bring very gusty winds and heavy rains back into town…
That’s a big time system wrapping up across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes. You can see the colder air coming in behind this for next weekend. That sets off a pattern featuring a deepening trough across the east for Thanksgiving week. The GFS Ensembles show how the colder than normal temps become entrenched across the region through the big holiday…
That has cold turkey deep into the heart of Dixie. Can we get some winter weather from that type of pattern? Yep… We sure can. Will we? We will have fun tracking the potential over the next week and change.
I will update things later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Winter is coming! Watch it nudge and wiggle its way into our hearts….and make us look at life differently.
I want to thank all the Veterans for their continuing service to our country on this very special day. May God be with them. We pray for their safety each and everyday of the year.
Thanks
I want to thank all the Veterans for their continuing service to our country on this very special day. May God be with them. We pray for their safety each and everyday of the year. Cold and snowy to our far north, and mild and dry in the southern states. Forecast for very little chances for precipitation for next week, along with a milder trend for our area. The same kind of weather we had this past week. This pattern looks more and more like a weak La nina coming together for the winter months ahead.
Schroeder just stop. One second you say winter is a guessing game and the next you say dry and warm this winter like it’s a fact. Go start your own weather blog if you are so certain about the weather this winter.
Long range winter weather forecasting is a guessing game. An educated guess. As we get closer to December first ( meteorological winter ), one must update his or her’s forecast. My older sister who is a retired teacher / principal, suggested that I create my own weather blog, but I feel I need more education in the field of meteorology. I thought about going for my Masters degree, but right now money is tight.
Thanks
Thanks
Thsnks Chris. Woke up to a cool 26 degrees here at our house. But still a beautiful morning! Weather is looking like it wants to try and give some holiday spirit and I’m all for it! I guess when you start getting to the end of November you should expect temps to be colder. Gonna be a great day for some football! Want to say a big THANK YOU to each and every veteran and their families for your service and your sacrifices for his country. I salute and admire each of you. You are truely heroes.
No one believes what you say Schroeder
Rinse and repeat… Seems to be the story of our weather. A day or two of cold follwed by a few days of rainy conditions. Over the years, I have grown to despise our weather here in Kentucky…Autumn, winter, and Spring are all to often what I stated above followed by usually dry, hot, with 100% humidity in the summer. Misery is the word to best describe…
Where did you state above? Wait……are you Schroeder?
Where I stated above meant the rinse and repeat part. lol
???
I like Kentucky, interesting people, beautiful natural surroundings, and very interesting and unusual variable weather conditions. A meteorological dream.
Here’s something and maybe some hope for us snow lovers. The 1917-18 winter was a La nina winter: http://www.weather.gov/lmk/december_1917_january_1918
It’s interesting that 1916/1917 winter had a seasonal total in Lexington of 55.4 inches, then the following 1917/1918 (in that link writeup) had Lexington for a seasonal total of 43.4 – they must have had bad back to back winters – I wonder why they only mentioned one of them? I’m guessing 1917/18 winter had more extreme cold temps.

Thanks
Thank you veterans.Could it be a white Thanksgiving???
Highly unlikely
Crystal, you are living in the southeastern part of Kentucky. You have a better chance of seeing snow on Thanksgiving Day, because you are close to the mountains. Snow likes elevation.
Like I said highly unlikely!!!
Thanks
In my 66 years, I have never seen a white Thanksgiving day. However, after Thanksgiving I have seen many heavy snowstorms with temperatures dropping to near -5 degrees. But that was back some years ago. Autumns are lasting longer is what I have notice since the late 1990’s. I don’t know why. I do know that sun spots are a major factor, because the sun is what drives our weather.
Only time will tell so Schroeder this winter will be just like last winter warm and hardly any snow? I’ve also been very into weather for a long long time im in cincy not ky but close enouph right anyhow weather is half a guessing game the other half they look at all the variables la nina el nino or lack of either and other surrounding water temps and several other things, either of us knows what this winter holds either does chris but all of us will take our best guess , as we know no 2 la ninas are the same and im pretty sure things wont b the same as last, idk about ky but we ave 23.6 inches think we got 11 or so i would guess this winter will b more average in terms of temp and snow maybe slightly above in souther ky? Maybe worse maybe not so bad
And me neither ive never seen a white thanksgiving in cincy a white Halloween as a kid though 1993 and heavy snow soon after thanksgiving
I have now been studying on what’s going on in the Arctic and in Siberia. Such as the Arctic Oscillation, Polar vortex and the westerlies, and also North Atlantic Oscillation. Watching especially if there is any signs of weakening in the Arctic Oscillation which would cause the westerlies to slow down in turn would cause cold Arctic air to build and move southward way into Texas. This would give us a better chance for a snowstorm if the subtropical jet is in the positive phase.
Thanks
