Good Sunday, folks. It’s cold and about to get a whole lot colder as we head into the week ahead. Another arctic front is ready to push into the bluegrass state, bringing a round of snow and bitterly cold temperatures. This continues a run of brutally cold air in our region.
Temps this morning are in the single digits for many, with a few spots possibly starting out below zero. Skies will be party sunny this afternoon as highs hit the 20-25 degree range.
Our arctic front arrives late on MLK Day Monday. Ahead of this, a band of light snow may break out late tonight and early on Monday…
A quick half inch of snow is possible to start the day.
That’s ahead of a pseudo warm front lifting quickly through here. Temps likely spike above freezing for a few hours, then the arctic front hits, dropping temps in a hurry. The light snow is behind the front and it moves in from northwest to southeast from later Monday into Tuesday…
Fronts like this typically put down a 1″-3″ snowfall, with higher amounts across the mountains out east. You can see how the snow band slows down as it hits eastern Kentucky, and there’s even a weak wave of low pressure along it.
Winds are also going to be VERY gusty as the snow rolls through, leading to local whiteout conditions for a time.
Lows behind this can drop to zero or below for a couple of days. Highs on Tuesday may not get out of he 10-15 degree range. We may also see an extended run of wind chills below zero.
Temps start to rebound by the end of the week, with a nice thaw coming by next weekend. That looks to get wiped our pretty quickly as a cold front sweeps through here…
I’m playing in a benefit basketball game this afternoon in Morehead, so I won’t be able to update again until later today or the evening.
Make it a great Sunday and take care.
When we get in to the middle of February the sun starts hitting at a little more direct angle. Any snow that comes by then won’t be around long. I’m like Chris I’m getting in spring mode. Bring on the warmer weather.
Good luck…there’s still 2 months left. We all know cold can linger into April. Are you Tom Wills? I remember one year we had a snow in late February and he came on the day before and said, the angle of the sun will cut down on any accumulation. So, maybe a 1/2 inch total. We ended up with 8 inches and the snow lasted 2 weeks. In theory though, you are correct. The snow has a more difficult time at that point of the winter season. However, it’s not a guarantee. Enjoy your Spring countdown. 😀
Agreed. Just a few years ago, we were snow starved (cold rain was abundant) until a nice little Valentine weekend snow came through. We were out of school until the 4th of March. Winter isn’t over no matter how ready everyone might be for Spring.
True. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about that fella Tom Wills. Some of the biggest snows I remember fell in February and March. I remember back in April around the 6th in 1987 here in Jackson County Ohio we got over a foot of snow. That is the latest I ever seen a big snow fall where I live.
Also 5 below with 4 to 5 inches of snow. More on the way.
Don’t think anyone is saying it doesn’t snow in February or March. It’s just a fact that temps start turning warmer on average from this point on. Southern Kentucky hits average highs in the 50s in the middle of February.
Will there still be cold days after that? Of course they will, but there will also be 50 degree plus days too. Can’t wait.
I remember that, and he came on the next day and said he was wrong, something we do not often hear, as most want to explain why they were really right, or cover every base ahead of a storm so as to not have a chance to be wrong.
Yes, he did admit to not getting that one correct. Rare indeed
We are very near the point where snows less than 4″ tend to get melted by the sun in a day, even when below freezing. If we do not get a big snow, the sun will zap what we get. Always does, Exception being the ice nine years ago. That insulated stuff for a few days.
Thanks for all you do! But one question. Where do you find the energy for a basketball game after the week you’ve had?! Lol. Awesome!
Thanks Chris for the frigid update. Presently, we have a temperature of seven degrees and the snow that fell the other day is beautiful. In a few minutes we are going to have a beautiful sunrise which enhances the beauty of the snow on the ground. Hope your team wins the basketball tournament, a good cause. Have a great Sunday.
Lost another great one…one of my favorite sports commentators Keith Jackson. He and Howard Cosell were familiar voices during my childhood.
Remember them well.
Goodness gracious, is it really -10 in Vanceburg or is that gauge a little off..
I woke up to a fresh half inch of snow in Covington. Nothing was on radar or falling from the sky when I went to bed at 11pm, and nothing now. Must have happened in the middle of the night.
It rained potato soup in my house yesterday. Husband said he bet CB didn’t forecast that
Take it to the hole, CB! Slamma Jamma!
Looks like snow on radar in Arkansas and Mississippi. That can only mean rain for us especially with another I70 Clipper coming down the pike.
-7 here in southern Fleming this morning
On the current water vapor loop, there is a low pressure forming and moving out of Colorado. May be the Alberta Clipper forecast for tomorrow. If it hooked up with a surface low in the western Gulf of Mexico we would have a winter storm to watch. In the Atlantic Ocean, there is a tropical system moving west towards the cold front. This could be the development of a Nor Easter. Could get interesting along the mid- Atlantic north to Boston later in the week. Something to watch.
What a difference clear skies with snow pack vs. cloudy skies with almost bare ground makes for low temperatures: Northern and NE KY had single digits to -10 for lows while Harlan in SE KY only had 13 for a low. Although it averages a little colder in North KY than my home in SE KY, that is still an impressive difference this morning considering that the Arctic air was already fully entrenched for the entire state!
Made it to 0 in Knox County
What is everybody’s thoughts on Monday night – tuesday snow? How much should we expect in Bell/Clay/Leslie Counties?
13 for a low here in knott co last night setting at 25 currently
Model trends seem to be pointing at a general 2-4 for Tuesday for southeastern ky
My forecast for richmond KY
Maybe flurries late tonight
Monday night snow showers, maybe half inch.
Eastern KY probably will get the 2 -3 inches
We might get an inch. Winning!
.75” a few weeks ago + 1.5” yesterday….. Just .75” to make it a trefecta! Snow madness, catch the feevah!
That’s hillbilly for trifecta 🙂
That’s what I’ve been dreaming…a 3inch snow fall for this winter…it’s like we are on a DIET winter for snowfall
Winter Weather Advisory out for central Kentucky and NE Kentucky compliments of Louisville and Wilmington OH National Weather Service offices through Tuesday. However, need to see which advisory start and end time is for your location as there are several variations.
What counties in NE Kentucky have the WWA?
Sref keeps trending up for snow in Knoxville with this Arctic front. Surprised that the nws morristown believes it should only amount to an inch. Given the snow ratio and at least 0.2 inches of liquid showing up on all the models, hard to understand why. With a frozen ground and two inches of snow with blowing winds, that will be enough to shut down the place.
I’m thinking same think…
NWS out of Louisville has issued a winter weather advisory for tomorrow’s clipper. There general thinking is 1-2 inches of snow region wide they do acknowledge SE Kentucky will need to be watched as the snow shower activity may intensify there. As for now a general 1-2 inch snowfall
I’m thinking many in the southeastern part of the state matbge there biggest snow in 2 years. 2 inches would do that for most of us lol
Even a half inch would do that for some of us. lol
Richmond is getting near the 3” mark for total snow this winter! That’s three times last winter! Booyaahh!
