Good evening, folks. Our winter storm is moving into the state, bringing the potential for freezing rain, sleet, snow and flooding rains.
Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Warning are out for much of the region…
A Flood Watch is also out for much of southern and eastern Kentucky…
Here’s a look at the possibilities we are facing…
Some pockets of a half inch of ice may try to show up. If that’s the case, power issues will come into play in a much greater way.
I’m watching the Covington area for the possibility of more snow than ice. If that’s the case, several inches of snow will be possible. The GFS continues to pick up on this…
Here are the tracking tools for the evening…

Will be an interesting night.
For those who go out and attempt to drive within the indicated zones.
*Cue the comments*: “I would love to have a big snow, but I definitely don’t want ice! I’m just ready for spring! Be safe out there, folks.” Essentially, if you find yourself in the ice zones, do not even try to go out late tonight or early tomorrow; conditions can be treacherous, and accidents will happen. Chris, I am just like you in that I am ready for spring weather to arrive so that we do not have to worry about the snow, ice, and cold temperatures.
Still can’t believe BM has a higher ice total than CB. Almost twice CB at .75″. I do not recall this happening before. Usually the average of both their forecasts is money in the bank.
Then simply add the two values together and divide the result by two. This will still provide you with an average, and it will still provide you with your money shot.
its around 30-31 and we had some light snow with a little rain 15 mins ago..
Where exactly is your location within the state of Kentucky?
todd county
36.8339° N, 87.1423° W
Thanks Chris. A little bit of light rain in Somerset so far. Nothing much happening this early.
Little bit of rain in Somerset now. Little bit of a flood later.
Ice Storm Warning now out for SE Mo./S. IL….hmm…and looks like the stuff is hiking it’s way right toward WKy Pkwy, if it stays true…
Was just at Kroger in Bardstown and it was sprinkling and spitting a flurry or three. Temp on Rover said 34°. It was def colder than when I’d left the house an hour prior.
Debbie, how was the bread aisle looking? Also, were milk and eggs plentiful?
Hey A.A. Grow up
I think that is a legitimate question…even WKYT has reported on many stories in which the bread, milk, and egg supplies at local and chain grocery stores become nil.
I don’t engage in the practice of the “bread/milk/eggs” fiasco which is par for the course of a southern winter storm for 2 reasons: If power goes out, then so does my way to cook french toast, and #2: I don’t like french toast. But, to be fair, there seemed to be plenty of all. I had to get slider buns and milk anyway, but was basically there because the hubs has such immense faith in the medicinal quality of Kroger-brand cough meds vs. any other store brand(s). If I’m going winter storm shopping, I buy things of substance, such as cheese doodles and family size bags of Hershey Kisses!
Doritos, Swiss Chocolates, and Mountain Dew are the essentials in the Ackbar household.
Hurray! You got the good stuff!!! 🙂
Wish we would have hit the forecast high for my area today. Everywhere was saying 42. High was 37 earlier and it is 34 right now. The 42 might have helps with some more thawing at least. Still have some stuff in the shade and the ground just did not warm enough.
Now in a flood watch a little south of the winter weather advisory. Supposed to warm up though so hopefully it gets a little warmer over night before dropping off again. Would hate to sit at 34 through this and then the drop off be lower than expected. Would totally freeze stuff up.
Stay warm but say cool.
Louisville Mets are really downplaying this saying most of the area will stay above freezing and get rain. They said Louisville is 36 degrees. My area of East Louisville is sitting at 32 degrees.
I wonder if the thermometers have calibration issues throughout Louisville or if the temperature gradient from one side of the city to the other is that steep for such a short radius of mileage? Regardless, my bookworm, you seem to be flirting on the edge of rain and ice. One could say that you are on the cusp of potential icy disaster. One could also say that you may be one toke over the line sweet Jes…wait a second, I may have went too far.
Is the Huntington/Ashland area one toke over the line as well, or getting no tokes at all?
It is ‘gone too far’ not ‘went to far’ A.A.
I have happily lived in Ashland in the past. Trust me when I say that they are always one toke over the line. However, I do hope that more tokes are on the way, Melva.
The Louisville heat island. Always warmer here in the city than in the burbs.
Consider the lights, the expended heat from automobiles and buildings, and consider the heat expended from all of the heat/air conditioning units needed to service the buildings within the city. Even a simple computer monitor can increase the temperature of the air by several degrees if only a distance of one inch from the screen. Imagine the tens of thousands of people living in the city using their cars, their buildings, their computer monitors, their television screens, and any electrical device. The Louisville Heat Island is only a product of big-city living. Come join some of the users who live out in the boonies; these individuals would give anything to see warmer temperatures.
So the new 00z NAM shows 4 to 5″ of snow for Covington also with .2 to .4″ of freezing rain, too! 00z High Def. NAM is a few miles further north with the snow. It shows Covington with about 1″ of snow and a devastating .5 to .65″ of freezing rain. So I could have half a foot of snow, a scary major ice storm, or combination. gr8.
Can you post a link? I never know where to look to find those!
I posted at the bottom of these comments.
Thanks!
Do not act like that you are not surprised or happy. You love it when winter weather hits your area. Embrace your love for the snow that falleth.
I would say dont look anymore, but it’s too interesting and exciting not to!
THIS is what we need more of!!! Enthusiasm for the weather!
This winter has been a bust for any lovers of snow.
Come on spring,I am tired of waiting on a decent snowfall.
Many people around the state have had “decent” 8 inch snows over the last several weeks. What constitutes a “decent snow”? 2.0 feet? If you are tired of waiting on a decent snow fall, why not just stop waiting for it while it is winter? Why does you being tired of waiting for a decent snow also involve the arrival of spring? You can stop waiting for a “decent” snow but still continue through the winter months.
Brilliant analysis.
I am ready for summer. Let’s skip winter and spring.
Temp hit freezing in Paducah way earlier than expected, at around 7 pm CT. It’s been raining since about 7:25 pm CT or so and we’re seeing some glazing. The cool thing?? THUNDER!
Christina Jade, your name is so exotic and unique. So, you are having “Thunder Ice” where you live. Now this is what I like to hear.
A.A. Stop the perverted comments
Wait, what? When it thunders during snow, we call it “Thunder Snow”. When it thunders during an icing event, it is called “Thunder Ice”. It makes a cool thundery sound. What are you talking about?
That is AWESOME!!! Thunder snow is rare enough–thunder ice/sleet?!!? WOW!!! Thanks for sharing, that’s some major energy blowing through!!!
Thunder Ice is about as cool as it gets in both a literal and figurative sense.
It was VERY cool! 🙂 The freezing line is just a few miles south of me right now (10:15 pm Ct) and those that are in the southern end of the Purchase region are getting more thunder and heavy downpours – but they are hovering at around 34 degrees. Still a little freezing rain falling here, and it looks like another wave is going to move through.
Kentucky Cats and winter weather appear a perfect match this year. Not in a good way though.
The UK Wildcats are as cool as ice.
Agreed
Small observation – someone new to the comment section has way too much time on their hands. Safe the salt for the roads.
We can harvest the salt from Crait.

I live 30 miles north of Cincinnati and it is 27. Had us at 1 – 3″ of snow but it has been revived. Now they are saying 3 -5″ of snow with very little ice here. Already school delays and closings being reported. I hope everyone in Ky stays SAFE. Ice is bad and I feel for all of you. If you don’t have to go out…..stay in. Your life is far more important than a loaf of bread or gallon of milk.
It does look like Cinci will get a nice dose of snow, temps are trending a little on the low side & you are right in the path of the heaviest snow (not switching over to sleet or mix, not yet anyway & doesnt appear to be that far north).
We are starting to see temperatures spikes in Ohio. Good luck.
Wish the troll would go back under the bridge already.
Are you going to complain all night or are you going to join us in our discussion about the weather. You will see that I have stayed in topic throughout the entire night. It may not be in the form that you think it should take, but this is truly the only off message response I have given all evening. But ya gotta pay the troll toll to get inside this boy’s soul.
Chris, do you think you could ban this Admiral troll?
Huh?
I wouldn’t go so far as to ban the Admiral. Like everyone on here, as it’s been for years, he’s got the right to his views and opinions as much as the rest of us. In fact, and it’s hard for me to say this, but I find his comments mildly entertaining. Much moreso than the previous snide comments made to another commenter that has apparently since went into hiding, and I can’t say I blame that person. I used to come on here and comment a lot right along with most of you (well, the few that are still here from those days), but haven’t been in recent years because the tone of some of the posters has been a bit on the insensitive side to some, where it used to be a lot of fun coming here and all giving our takes on what might or might not happen during whatever wx event we were tracking at the time, and good-natured ribbing at best at some comments, but it was all GOOD!
I’m off my podium now. And I still believe that us here about 30-50 mi’s south of the river will get in on the ice action, too. And I’d like a little thunder to go with it as well!!! 🙂
I am not entirely sure what I have done to cause a reprimand of a ban, but it does appear that many posters on this blog feel as if they are already the jurors on their own court of public opinion. I agree that this blog is typically very negative to the point where they blame Chris and other users for the outcome of the weather as if their typed words on a screen had any effect on global weather patterns. This website and this blog are fun! However, some users want this to be something else. IT’S A TRAP!
I like Admiral Ackbar. He keeps it interesting. If you want to ban someone, get rid of that fool Schroeder.
I’ll take rain anytime. Let’s see where Bubba’s mythical fence sets up.
If we go by temp trends, the Kentucky river might be. 34 right now north of the river and 37 south of the river. Somewhere north of the river might get significant ice. I64 ground zero maybe? I don’t know- hence the question mark.
I will admit that this event, along with most other events this year, have been so difficult to predict. Everything always depends on air currents as small as breath from a mouth. These systems swing so widely one way or another.
34 now. hard to say if temps will hold steady or fall when precip starts.
All it takes is one deep breath to sway the weather one direction or another.
Obvious troll is obvious
A man crying out for help.
Yet your name is literally “which way is the wind blowing”. Can you not see the irony?
You do realize that it is called “Nowcasting” since the smallest of weather changes can be a make a break difference in ice and rain? That is not trolling at all.
Probably the same places as Chris’s
Chris rarely gets it wrong.
It never rains or snows at Andy’s house. 😉
Nor does it on Mon Calamari.
CB just upped the ice threat area on a tweet. Looks like the Kentucky river might be the threshold between mainly rain and more ice.
I just saw that. However, it looks like the “pink area” was drawn by the weatherman’s daughter in the same way that she draws clouds in 2nd grade. The ruffles on the pink zone better be accurate or I am complaining.
The SPC has always used that shape to outline focal points in their MDs.
Stay on target! We shall know any moment from now!
Currently 31…. east side of Louisville…….winds out of the north.
Those northern winds are what you want to have if you want ice and snow. The gulf winds shall bring the rain. What do you want? I will take tropical winds over Canadian pressure systems any day of the week.
Watched the winds switch. Decided to grill out and had to turn it around due to the wind switching as the charcoal was heating up. Makes me think it’s going to be interesting. Definitely a nowcasting event, even though the term makes me want to cringe!!
Nowcasting is so 2010’s. Events like this are to be casted every nanosecond. Nanosecondcasting is the waaaaave…of the future.
Car and walkways covered in ice
Nothing in South Lexington yet. Fingers crossed for rain!!!
I am honestly hoping for ice since I am not getting out in it.
For once, I’m very happy to NOT live in an advisory, watch, or warning area.
Where is your sense of excitement, pal?
Not sure anyone could truly be excited by potential freezing rain or flooding. 😉
Haha. Flooding – no. Ice – yes. I love icy conditions since it gives people an excuse to stay home.
Spike in temps here 29 to 31 Athens ohio
Two degree changes are dramatic in this kind of event.
U stock up on enough beer? If not your tearing through it fast
Guinness Draught in honor of the KY water draught.
He is just trolling. It is generally people who have some sort of mental Self esteem issue who troll.
Folks, we have a clinical psychologist amongst the diverse cast of winter weather lovers. Based on my enthusiasm for the weather and weather events, I have been given a diagnosis over the internet -the first and only of its kind.
Oh, I highly doubt it’s the first.
Paducah roadcams kinda pretty iced over.
What was once West heads East. In due time. In due time.
I’m in Paducah – it’s slicker than all get-out. I saw a car slide into the ditch down the road. (they are fine) No way I’m getting out in that.
33.4 in frankfort, but dew point is 29, if the temp drops to near that level, major ice could form?
If the temperature falls, be prepared for a bad time. Trust me. Paducah is getting hit hard.
Reports are in saying that Paducah is in pretty rough shape. Cars are covered with ice, vehicles are already in ditches, cameras are frozen over, and conditions are poor for travel. It is almost like a war zone out there. Just know that these conditions may soon be in your part of the state. Proceed with caution and respect the weather.
War zone is a little strong – but it’s definitely slick. 🙂
Don’t feed the troll. He gets off to it.
Just a shout-out to “Snow” who was asking about Wayne County earlier today–you are still right on the fence, but I would bet money that you will see some sleet before the switch to all rain. Our local forecasters & NWS keep showing Wayne Co. just south of the ice/mix line, but I saw a graphic on the Louisville, KY NWS website that shows Wayne Co. getting some sleet or mix & possibly some snow before becoming all rain. So for safety’s sake, just stay off the roads for a while if at all possible until the rains come & please be safe out there!
31 in owenton ky. light rain falling. looks as though trees are starting to glaze over
The official temps in Lex have increased from 34F to 36F in the last hour. Here in my backyard in east Lex, however, it’s been a steady 33F since around 8pm.
Rain.
2-3 degree differences in localities will show up. Temps are marginal.
Forecasted temp of 32 at 11 PM—actual: 35. Trend is toward rain.
I knew wet-bulbing would play a factor:
