Good Thursday, everyone. We continue tracking rounds of showers and thunderstorms rolling across the bluegrass state, bringing an extended flood threat. This will carry us through the upcoming weekend and may end with strong or severe storms.
Our day starts with the potential for flash flooding into much of the state as a band of heavy rain moves through. This can drop a general 1″-2″ before sunup in some areas. Watch those waterways.
Additional rounds come through here later today then again Friday and Saturday. The setup for late Saturday into Saturday night has a severe storms look to it…
That’s a setup I’m going to be watching very closely, as instability really increases ahead of our cold front and low wrapping up to our northwest. The front FINALLY looks to end the rains by Sunday afternoon, but not before many areas have picked up several inches of rain.
Here are your tracking tools for the day…

Thanks Chris, here in Taylor County we have so far received well over an inch of rain. I don’t know the exact totals, but I can tell you there isn’t any reports of flooding in the county. You mention thunderstorms in your blog this morning. I would like to know what parts of Kentucky are receiving such ? The rains have ended for now till the next wave if it develops.
Rainfall total since 12:00 am est. @ 1.41″ for Taylor County.
Typical Schroeder being politely condescending.
Not a weather related comment.
Don’t really care it’s a truthful comment.
Prelude, no use of trashing someone. That’s why some our daily readers don’t come on here because of rude comments that doesn’t belong here. Just keep the comments about the weather.
Winter Lover it’s not trashing at all. Schroeder remarks at times tends to be condescending of Chris’s comments quit defending Schroeder.
He’s entitle to his opinion.
PRELUDE: PLEASE STOP THIS. WE ALL WANT A PEACEFUL COMMENT SECTION ON CHRIS’S BLOG. WHY DON’T YOU DO WHAT YOU DO BEST AND STUDY THE WEATHER MODELS AND REPORT YOUR FINDINGS ON CHRIS’S COMMENT SECTION. I FOR ONE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS DOWN THE ROAD WEATHER WISE.
Careful… releasing the Ackbar again is more intimidating than facing the Kraken…
Ain’t that the truth
Flooded roads here in Nelson County. Schools on a 2 hour delay due to the flooding.
I’m grateful the rain has been a miss for my area. The last rain i had was Saturday. This has allowed the river to get close to normal in my area.
That’s good news ! Glad you and Terry are okay.
Looks like on the radar, the rains are forming more to our south and moving more easterly.
It looks now like a low pressure is developing along the front and moving northeast toward central and southern Kentucky. Second wave Chris was predicting yesterday.
Here in far western,ky we have receive inch and half or two of rain, but the rain came down slow which that allows the creeks and streams to absorb it. We didn’t have the down pours so far. that may not be the case when the next system rolls in here this weekend.
Winter lover : Being late February, the precipitation should be all snow. Two inches of rain would translate into twenty inches of snow. That’s what I’d like to see, and I know you would too instead of this depressing rain and gloomy skies.
yep
The rain keeps dying as it enters east and southeast ky.. Maybe that’s why nws hasn’t expanded the flood watch. Other than a few sprinkles it hasn’t rained here in Perry co since Saturday. All the creeks and streams are back to normal level now.
Here in the east end of Louisville, some of the smaller creeks are close to being out of their banks now, and ditches on the sides of the road are filling. Glad we have not seen the downpours lately. The rain has just been pretty steady. I have a feeling, like another said that things are going to change and roads out in the county will be under water in places. It won’t take too much more for that to occur I think. Throw in the severe potential and it looks to be an interesting weekend.
Received 2 1/2 inch of rain in my rain gauge since last night in Jackson Ohio. Flooding is going on as I speak. Kids are being sent home in some of the schools.
Here in Jessamine, got ducks swimming on the pond across the road from us and could do some kayaking in the stream between us and our neighbors. Of course this is note worthy as normally the pond area is crop land and the big rushing stream is small, dry ditch.
Somebody check Jim Caldwell’s math. My preliminary check on his preliminary estimate is not his preliminary 8.61″…yet. I have 8.08″ for Lexington as of 10:30 this morning, preliminarily speaking of course.
Also, I’m checking in with 2.25″ in Valley Station, just southwest of Louisville International where 2.37″ has fallen since yesterday.
Hopefully we don’t go the other extreme during Summer.
