Good Thursday to one and all. Another storm system is taking aim at the bluegrass state today, bringing additional rains for a few. After this goes through, a cold front drops in here on Friday, ushering in another chill in the air for the weekend. We even have an increasing threat for frost.
Today’s system is working across the Tennessee Valley, throwing a few showers into, especially the southern half of the state. That system will then lift northeast across the Appalachian Mountains this evening, bringing the rain a little deeper into eastern Kentucky. Track the drops…
Farther north, you won’t see much, if any, rain today. Temps will be all over the place, with 50s under the rain and mid to upper 60s with the dry weather. A local 70 may show up if you can get enough sun.
Another cold front moves in on Friday, bringing the chance for a shower or storm. Winds will be gusty with highs in the 60s. Much cooler than normal temps arrive behind this front for the weekend. Daytime highs are general in the 60s with very gusty winds. There’s even the chance for a stray shower in the east.
Green thumbs are on high alert for Sunday morning as lows may drop below freezing…
Cool winds on Sunday will keep temps in the upper 50s and low 60s for much of central and eastern Kentucky, with middle 60s west…
Temps finally take off on Monday and that kicks off a warm Kentucky Derby week. Highs may reach 80 on a few occasions by the middle of the week, but it’s not going to last. A cold front may make a run at us by Derby Weekend, with a severe threat ahead of it and cool air behind it. Watch the forecast temperature anomalies…
Shades of 2004 are trying to show up as we inch closer to summer.
I will have another update today, so check back. Have a good one and take care.
If the rain keeps up, a 2004 summer is certainly a good bet.
Sigh! SIGH! 😛
But…your right!
What happened in 2004?
Bunch of severe weather in Late May. No 90 degree temps in Lexington for the entire summer. We had high’s in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s in August.
Yeah I remember highs in the LOW 60s way up into June that year. I sure hope we don’t have a repeat of that. It was not a good year for the garden.
It was a lousy summer in SE KY too with Jackson n it hitting 90. That was also the year when, I need to re-lookup the data to be 100% correct, 4 tropical systems provided rain in far SE KY between July and September!
Also that was the year of the Masterson Station tornado in late May.
That’s the year my house was built. The foundation was laid during the tornado and that’s it. The house beside me was built but heavily damaged. Had my house been built, it would have been damaged too.
Thanks Chris for the update. The next few days look nice as far as temperatures go, if we can only gets some much needed sunshine. I can only hope that the storms forecast will be after the Derby weekend. The late spring of 2004 was plague by widespread tornado events back to back. My God, everyone pray that this will not happen ! Have a great day everyone.
In December 2004, a day or two before Christmas, Dress Regional Airport in Evansville, Indiana recorded 22 inches of snow.
Would still love a snow like that! Of course I can wait for winter to bring it.
What was 2004’s summer like around here? I can’t remember!
Super chilly, based on summer average of course, and wetter than average☹
Plus, late severe weather season for May/June!
If it wasn’t` for the rain part, I would love a ‘cooler than normal’ Summer!
I’m usually with you on that but 2004 was over the top on the cool. I felt like we were in New England.
Yeah, I remember some record low maximum highs mentioned at various weather stations at times that summer. Terrible for pool owners that year!
In my area of WV, 2009 was known as the year without a Summer. I remember it was in the low 60’s on the July 4. I think most folks didn’t like it. But I loved the temps, didn’t care much for the frequent rain though.
That is about the only way anyone south of the Ohio River will ever have summers like that: Rain, Rain and more Rain to keep those highs low☹
2004 was also the year that we had that Derecho come through on July 13th.
