Good Saturday, everyone. It’s a wet start to the weekend, but dry air takes control later today and carries us into early Sunday. That won’t last too long because another system blows across the region Sunday night, unleashing another very cold pattern.
As mentioned, the early day rains will push to the east during the afternoon…
Some sun returns to the western half of the state before the day is finished. Temps are about normal for this time of year with 50-55 for many areas.
Sunday is a mild day with low 60s for many as a gusty southwesterly wind kicks in. That wind is ahead of a low pressure working from the Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes. Showers increase from west to east this evening into the wee hours of Monday. As temps crash behind a cold front, a period of light snow and flurries will be noted through Monday morning…
Monday is a very cold day with highs in the 30s, but gusty winds make it feel even colder.
That’s a very deep trough taking control of the weather through the middle of the week…
I’ve highlighted a disturbance rotating around the big upper level low. That system dives in from the northwest by Tuesday night and Wednesday and could bring some light snow or flurries with it.
That’s a lot of much colder than normal air centered right on top of us for the final week of November…
That cold shot tries to finally lift out by the end of the week and we may see a system bring rain, snow or a mix of the two…
The storm that follows that next weekend may cut to our west, bringing similar temps to what we have out there this weekend. As that storm passes, the cold overwhelms the region once again into the first week of December. That’s when the blocking is forecast to really get established, leading to additional early season fun and games.
I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. I’m a bit confused on part of your post but I DO understand that it is going to get cold! For now, that will do! Have a great Saturday all and I’m already looking forward to the next post. Go CATS!!
Today tomorrow 55 to 60, temp drop Sunday night maybe a flurry Monday morning, I see 30-40 degrees for highs till Friday,,,chance of flurries late Wednesday night, warm back up next weekend into mid 50’s. Nothing to exciting this week!
Go CATS!
Very good job at summing up what looks like another boring week of weather in our area. Warm/rain then dry/cold few flurries then repeat again.
I think my post yesterday was misunderstood, but it is clear that the strong blocking alone isn’t enough to fully unleash winter on KY and surrounding areas yet as it is only going to cool down to 40 for highs and then warm right back up, at least for SE KY. I was a bit surprised as I thought, if anything, the blocking would be too strong and crush the jet to the Gulf with a lot of cold, arctic air and no precip. Maybe later in December, the cold and moisture can reach us!
It’s very difficult to get a storm to fall as all snow in our area any more. Rain has to be involved somewhere along the way. Most of the time the bulk of the precip is rain. Winter in the Tri-State more closely resembles what one would expect to see in Bristol or Knoxville TN now.
NWS Paducah has uploaded all ten or so lectures from the Nov 3 KenTenn Workshop in Hopkinsville KY. KenTenn 2018 was a joint venture between NWS Nashville, NWS Louisville and NWS Paducah that brought weather speakers from area tv stations, Western Kentucky University, Ft Campbell Army Airfield as well as the three mentioned NWS offices. Pulling up the YouTube page will give the wide variety of lecture topics ranging from winter storm safety, El Nino winters, tornadoes, military meteorologists, WKU meteorology programs including severe weather chasing.

I had hoped to go to KenTenn 2018 but my wife and I had already made plans to attend a wedding. But now, weather weenies like me 😉 can now see what we missed out on.
