Good Friday, folks. It’s Kentucky Oaks Day and it’s looking like another very active weather day as a small, but potent, low pressure works right on top of the state. Behind this comes a bigger system likely to bring heavy rain for Kentucky Derby Saturday.
Let’s begin with the system working through here today. This system will have a core of very heavy rain that can cause flash flooding issues to develop quickly. In addition to the flood potential, strong to severe storms will be possible just ahead of this low. We may see an uptick in the threat across the east this afternoon as some sun may show up ahead of this.
I’ll talk Derby to you right after your Friday tracking tools…
The action becomes fairly scattered later today with temps in the 70s. After a break in the rain tonight into early Derby Day, a large period of heavy rain and some thunder takes over, making for a very wet Derby Day and Evening. This could even bring another round of local high water issues.
Better weather slowly moves in early Sunday and takes us into Monday. Temps will really warm early next week, but more storms quickly increase. This is a very wet period over the next week, with several inches of rain possible…
The Ensembles show much of the country dealing with above normal rainfall over the next few weeks…
Have a great Oaks Day and take care.
I try not to complain because it changes nothing but I am tired of all this rain.
That heavy rain is right over Louisville according to the radar posted. One great thing on Chris’s blog is that he has great radar updates along with great meteorology information. I feel for all those who look forward to the Kentucky Derby every year and we have this CRAPPY rainy, sloppy tract to contend with for tomorrows race. Maybe if we are lucky it won’t be raining at post time. Good luck to whoever wins.
Looks like I’m going to be behind schedule for planting my peppers, tomatoes, and squash…ground will be way too wet, the way it appears now.
In my professional horticultural opinion, gardens are not going to preform well unless you have raised beds to plant in.
I wish I could show you my straw bale garden, but I don’t know how. I encourage you to google straw bale gardens you won’t be disappointed. It’s wonderful and you won’t be hoeing yourself to death nor weeding, I absolutely love it.
We have been spared of the daily rain here in the SE part of the state, but that looks to end. Back to the weather of the last few years where you cant get a good stretch of good days in. With that being said it has rained pretty much every weekend for a long while now, and the streak looks to continue .
We need the Bermuda High pressure system to strengthen and move west to give us our usual Summer weather.
Any signs that may happen?
In my 68 years on Earth, we have most years experience the heat and humidity and dry conditions usually starting in mid May through August. But, the last ten or more years Summers are lasting longer.
When the forecast is for the rain train to continue I remind myself of the droughts of 83 and 88….dont want one of those again either….
Nor do we want 2012 again.
Amen to that
They almost canceled Forth of July Fireworks that year and we still had two months of summer left.
The drought I remember was from 1986-1992. Dust bowl like conditions existed and the Weather Channel called a drought symposium because it involved such a large area of real estate. Will this weather type occur again ? I would say YES because nature always has a way of self correcting.
