Good Friday, everyone. A slow-moving front is going to cause some issues for our big Mother’s Day Weekend as low pressure works into the region. That means cooler winds and rounds of showers and storms, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall numbers for some.
Yesterday’s severe threat did a disappearing act, sticking with the theme of the spring. As a matter of fact, the last several severe weather seasons have been super quiet around here. Shhh… Don’t wake it up. 🙂
Our cold front is slowing down on top of the state today. That means some scattered showers will be noted, especially early and across east and southeast. Here’s regional radar to track the action…
A wave or two of low pressure will develop and roll northeastward along the stalled front this weekend. That could bring some heavy rains into part of the state, especially in the southeast…
That’s almost a wintertime looking setup as much colder air dives into our region. Check out the temperature departures through the middle of next week…
Tuesday morning looks to be the coldest morning with some readings around 40…
Can some pockets of upper 30s show up? That’s a possibility.
Another system dives in from the northwest by the second half of next week and that will bring our next round of rain.
Have a great Friday and take care.
Well in my area of Southern Ohio the last few storm systems have fizzed out. Yes we got a little rain but nothing like the strong storms predicted. Like some have said the southern storms have been robbing us. The Weather men and women are not picking up on this the last few times they made there forecasts.
I don’t think 40 is all that cold.
It is if you are a Tomato plant, but if you are a Rhododendron it’s a perfect temperature.
The high mts here have a lot of rhododendrons and of course chilly at night compared to the rest of the state but not as cold on the valley areas of SE KY. 40 is pretty typical for a few nights in May; however, the valley areas of SE KY are mostly 50s and 60s for lows by now. It will be a short lived BlackBerry Winter…lol…been a warm spring and almost completly frost free since April 1st, so no complaint from me:)
Terry, does anyone plant Rhododendron Hybrids in Harlan to enjoy as a landscape plant ?
Storm rain total for Taylor county 0.00 but, for the month so far .93 inches.
We have some hybrids in Harlan. I love Rhodendron but don’t have any myself.
Thanks Terry, I haven’t planted any here at my place but I really enjoy it when I see one growing in someones landscape.
Outside of a short sprinkle it didn’t even rain here yesterday. That’s a win, but I just wish the weather models wasn’t showing “strong thunderstorms”, when it doesn’t even rain. The system just broke up when it got to this area. Hard to plan your day when the weather channels future radar shows widespread rain coverage just a few hours away. Lol
I know. Nothing in Harlan but that is typical here from a SE wind set-up as the mts shear storms to death of a low pressure tracks too far west! Even rain abd total rain accumulation forecasts are worse lately.
Looks like Blackberry Winter next week to me.. Ky Oldsters know what I’m talking about….
You bet !
I think Locust Winter this weekend – Blackberry Winter is late May? Not sure I can keep them all straight.
Locust bloomed out about two weeks ago here in SE KY with Blackberries in full bloom now…but who knows…lol. Some years, it does get cool around Memorial Day week but not too often.
Through out my property there are wild blueberry thickets and they are now blooming. Is there such thing as “Blueberry Winter” ? By the way Terry the blueberry is a member of the Heath family the same as the Rhododendron. (relatives)
When meteorologist forecast severe weather it is always a potential. This Spring, like Chris just reported has been quiet so far for most areas of Kentucky. The Storm Prediction Center has not had the Ohio Valley in a high risk category for Kentucky, for I can’t even remember. This Spring has been a little delayed no question, and I expect Summer will arrive without must fanfare with the three H’s. A drier Summer along with the usually heat and humidity is always a possibility in any given year. Whatever the future weather brings we will all have to deal with it and try not to complain (I’m guilty of this.) LOL
Blackberries in bloom here in Taylor County. I guess it depends on your location when it comes to certain plants. Don’t know about Locust as I’ve not seen any growing on my property. The old fishing saying is “If the locust are blooming the B*a*s*s are biting”
Lots of locust north of your location around Woodford County. We don’t have blackberries anymore but good to know they’re coming along.
I’m very grateful the severe storm threats have not panned out here. My brother in SW Texas called last night to tell me he had heavy hail and wind damage to his property and vehicles yesterday. Windows blown out, RV roof peeled off, truck looks like someone took a baseball bat to it, etc. Said there was golfball size hail covering the ground when it was over. Thankfully he has insurance.
Good lord my nice and her family live in El paso and I haven’t heard anything in the way of large hail in her area. If there is something wrong she will post it on Face Book.
