Good Saturday, folks. It’s another hot and humid day across the bluegrass state, but a major change is on the way. This comes in the form of a fall-like cold front slamming in here on Monday, bringing heavy rain and strong storms ahead of it, and a late September brand of air behind it.
Temps today are similar to what we had on Friday with highs generally in the low 90s with a heat index topping 100 for many. Scattered showers and storms may blossom in the heat and humidity, especially across the south and southeast…
Showers and storms will really increase on Sunday as a cold front nears from the northwest. These showers and storms may be on the strong side and put down torrential rains.
That continues into Monday as the front arrives…
Once again, a cold front like this typically squeezes out some big storms. Local high water issues will continue to be possible.
MUCH cooler air comes in here behind that front as the numbers go way below normal…
Highs in the 70s for Tuesday and Wednesday for many with lows that can drop deep into the 50s. You happy? š
Make it a great day and take care.
He!! Yeal I am happy!!!
” Deep into the 50’s and highs in the 70’s ? ” Not the forecast for Taylor County on Tuesday and Wednesday. This all depends on what the barometric pressure is on each side of the cold front as it enters our area. No, not happy after reading yesterday’s blog and the comment section. You can blame the heat but that is just part of it that makes people act this way.
Ummmm…… you wanna run your post by me one more time? Especially the part of the barometric pressure.
I’m not going too much into meteorological semantics. What I said is actually a question. Is the High pressure to the north of the cold front higher in barometric pressure than the High pressure that is currently over the southeast and extending into the Ohio Valley ? Will the two Highs merge and continue the hot and humid weather or will the High pressure north of the cold front over take the High pressure that is currently situated over our area and in the southeast. This all depends on barometric pressure. I would say we will get a glancing blow of the cooler weather before the southeast ridge takes over next weekend thus returning to the usual hot, hazy, humid Ohio Valley Summer.
Yes, this will be temporary, a nice break. We still have August and September before we start seeing more cool shots than heat waves
Have a great Saturday everyone and stay cool and safe !
YES, IāM HAPPY!!! I HATE the heat!!! Bring on the
Sad to see some people attack this as people being “soft” yesterday. I mean, at the time of Bailey’s twitter post it was reported 6 degrees hotter on the heat index then what it was showing not far from here on that. It was showing 99 and everywhere was reporting 105 at that time.
I mention this because I saw a lot of people saying “What did we do as kids when it was 92” and stuff like that. Well, it depends. With the very high humidity most would say in a cool as possible place. I lived in a high population area and during a heat wave when I was young the humidity and feel was just so high. We did not play kickball or anything. They cancelled baseball on those days. No practice. Even then they did this stuff. It was dangerous heat.
I moved some during my younger years. Spend a lot of time in Ohio but one place we lived for a summer was in Texas. It was hot and dry so we played out with the neighbors. It got really humid for a spell but was still hot. Even the ones who grew up there slowed down. It was splashing in the little pool under the tree and just sitting around until the sun went down.
The internet was not a thing. But you would hear on the news how people died. Many people in fact. From heat related illnesses. Things they could directly relate to the heat. It was on t.v., something I do not have service for anymore and never watch, because that was all there was without the internet and cell phones. Reported widely.
I am not one to worry about heat. But this summer has been so humid. And the heat has been there. I go out and work outside and find that I am instantly sweating. Not like usual either. And it sticks. You get drenched. Staying hydrated helps but it is very hard to cool. Have seen some younger people get over hot.
And even I did once. Had what my doctor said was heat exhaustion. I was drinking water and stuff but where the humidity that day was 85% and it was 88 degrees with a real feel of 97 I just was not cooling. Did not even realize it until I went to come in. Was drinking some water and standing in the shade and I almost black out. I feel a little sick and sit down. Dizzy feeling and stuff. It happened without me realizing. I was not really working hard just working outside. I was drinking plenty of water and taking breaks. But with the humidity the sweat just sticks and does not evaporate for cooling like needed.
I agree about the humidity this year for sure! Almost every low in Harlan down in the valley (not the mountain tops like the Black Mt Mesonet location or Pine Mt) have been above 70 since June. This is definitely no where near the hottest summer based upon temps but definitely more humid than average based upon consistently high dewpoints coupled with abundant rainfall…a semi-tropical rainforest it seems and has been in recent years:)
I use to work out in 100 degree heat in my nursery and not complain. But when you get past 67 years old it is dangerous !
When we grew up in western NC in the 80s, the mountains made a huge difference. Yes, it would be hot and humid, but always 10 degrees cooler than “outside the mountains”. Asheville would be 89. Greenville SC and Charlotte would be 99. And at night, it always cooled into the upper 60s, sometimes mid-60s, whenever everyone outside of the mountains were lucky to get to 75F. It was rare to get to 90 and even rarer to 95. We did not have AC which blows my mind because now I can’t live without AC.
anyway – I think our saving grace from big #’s from heat have been the partly cloudy skies. Sun goes behind clouds, then pops back out, all day….I’ve noticed this has kept my attic from reaching super hot temps like the other days when we had FULL sun dawn to dusk.
Terry, years ago when I was visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains looking at you know what (Rhododendrons) I ran into a beautiful little Mountain town somewhere in Virginia or North Carolina had lunch and talk with the local friendly folks. I ask about the weather there and they replied that in the Summer it hardly ever got above 75-80 degrees and the nights cooled off into the 40’s-50’s. Winters were cold but not frigid and there was plenty of snow for Winter Sports. If memory serves it was Bent Mountain, Virginia but not really sure. Anyway, there were lots and lots of Rhododendrons in full bloom at the end of June.
Get over it already with some of you people. If you think its hot and humid, fine, some don’t think its meltdown weather, that’s fine too. Your opinion isn’t better than anyone else’s regardless of what your opinion is.
I lived in a trailer with no AC near the river in E Ky and was as hot as now. Hotter of course in the trailer during the day. We are overall, softer. No way to spin otherwise, but heck, I would love to have had AC and the things folks have now to be softer. š We didn’t have AC cause we were po’. Really.
LOL! This is the AC generation…I wouldn’t want to go without it either:)
Yep – me too. I worked in the hay fields as a kids (product of a single parent…) to buy our families first air conditioner when I was in middle school during the summer of 79. (It was used and only helped a small part of the house.) It lasted a couple of years and then the sweat returned.
We are definitely softer – I never had AC in school either, as a student (ever!) or in my fist 16 years teaching. We survived – no emergencies needed. It was just hot. Now I bet schools would shut down if the AC goes out…
They do…LOL.
Schools are always out in SE KY though. Whether cold, flurries, high water or too hot, SE KY schools miss a lot of days anymore. Oh well. As far as the heat though, I am glad media makes a bigger deal about the hot than in the older days if it will save lives since heat is the #1 weather killer!
I’m the first to agree we are spoiled rotten in the AC department. Sitting here right now, I wouldn’t even know it’s a miserable 101 heat index outside.
I’ve been wondering……the heat index is the “feel like” temp, right? OK, so say you’re in Arizona, the actual temp is 110, but the heat index is 105 because of the dry heat. So the “feel like” temp is Arizona is 105, verses a “feel like” temp of 105 on the east coast……So if both areas “feel like” 105, wouldn’t the humid 105 “feel like” temp be worse than the other 105 “feel like” temp?
My uncle lives in Scottsdale, just outside of Phoenix where the temperatures are hot but little humidity. When he visits in the summer here in Kentucky, he says it’s hard to breathe because the air is so thick with moisture.
I would prefer a dry 105. At least when you sweat, your body can cool more efficiently. Downside is dehydration and other heat ailments can sneak up on you since you are still sweating a lot, but your body feels ok at the moment, then ugh, don’t feel so well
Must have good reception on Chimney Top…
This what summer is supposed to be folks here in our part of world. I think the problem is the media over hype our weather takes makes it sound we have never experienced it before. It’s all common sense of how well you take care of yourself during the hot conditions.Mother nature does wonders in our lifestyle
just got to adapt to it.
I don’t think anyone really thinks this hasn’t happened before. It is normal. It’s just something to talk about on the weather blog. That’s basically what we gab about in the comments section. Current weather.
here in Pikeville, 622pm its 101.1 in the shade. don’t know what the feel like temp is but its miserable out.
Well, t-storms missed Harlan now in Bell Co rapidly heading NW towards poor ole Bobt in Knox Co! I can see the thunderheads from my house looking west.
Went for a hike this afternoon in the Red River Gorge – it was hot but I loved it!
Like a scene from war of the worlds tonight ton of lightning in one spot but no thunder very bright and freaky as heck.
