Good Thursday, everyone. A cold front is dropping into the state today, bringing the potential for strong storms and heavy rains. This isn’t an all day type of deal, but the storms that do crank will be packing a punch as the front slows down right on top of us. This means the storm threat continues into Friday, but it also means some pleasant temps show up.
As mentioned, today’s storms may be strong or even severe at times. High winds and hail are the usual suspects and the Storm Prediction Center has the low-end risk for much of the area…
The cold front slowly presses to the south on Friday, keeping scattered showers and storms going. The best chance is along and south of Interstate 64. Cooler air is right behind the front and this looks delightful as we kick off the weekend. This front is going to try and push a little farther south for Saturday, giving us mainly dry weather and awesome temps. Highs may not get out of the 70s for some. Overnight lows this weekend should reach deep into the 50s…
Temps rebound quickly by Sunday afternoon as a few showers and storms begin to stream back in from the southwest. That action increases Monday and Tuesday ahead of a sharp cold front…
Temps drop quickly behind that front, but another front quickly follows that up by the end of the week…
This front could unleash a very cool air mass for Labor Day Weekend…
That would be absolutely incredible!!
I leave you with your storm tracking tools for the day…

Have a great Thursday and take care.

Yes, we finally received some much needed rain.
Chris on August 22, 2019 at 8:52 am
345a a crack of thunder was so loud it woke me up and then it dumped torrential rain!!! That’s the type of KY storm I miss. Can’t even remember the last time thunder woke me…
Chris I think we have more lighting and thunder this summer we had previous summers especially here in my neck of woods in western ky

The marginal threat is not severe. Cold fronts are model hype.
TennMark on August 23, 2019 at 6:13 am
Storm Prediction Center outlook maps explain that the “Marginal Threat” actually IS for severe weather albeit the lowest tier of the five levels for severe wx. While the darker green color is the Marginal Threat, it’s the lighter green shade that is for areas with t-storms generally expected to be below severe limits.

We had a good rain the other day about 0.60 enough to keep the fire danger down. Chances look promising next few days. Just hope no one get the severe stuff.
I don’t think we seen the last heating days once this front comes through. But I do like what the forecast holds for next several day highs only 80-85 with low humidity. Bring it! Have a good day
Of course. Parts of Kentucky, officially in a moderate drought, and now we get the rain. However, some did not do as well, even here in Jefferson county. But, the outlook looks promising.
Since I had average July precip, it spared most of Harlan CO and may get enough down this way this week to still keep me out of D0 category. I have a hard time with areas like Knox showing up abnormally dry and Harlan not since they had double the rain in July but it isnt a perfect map and still has it’s usefulness.

All I know is its dry Terry.

Shhhhh, don’t tell CB. He doesn’t believe in dry / drought conditions, thus the drought monitor map is bogus. Fortunately for us here in Louisville / Jefferson County, 0.50-1 inch fell overnight to alleviate the dryness. For areas just to our south, they mostly missed out. Let’s hope we all get more beneficial rain today and tonight. Hard to believe as wet as June was (and the year as a whole), that it dried out like it did in the Louisville area and counties just to our south. I still don’t understand why CB refuses to acknowledge dryness in areas that receive abnormally low rainfall, even if it’s just short term dryness. Yes, it’s summer and some areas do better than others in terms of storms, but that doesn’t mean as a meteorologist, you ignore dryness while constantly hyping storms.

Hi Mark. I do not appreciate your comments for one minute. The Drought Monitor is bogus, but doesn’t mean it can’t be accurate every once and a while. Last year was the wettest year on record for Kentucky, but it routinely showed us in the “Abnormally Dry” category. Even now… This isn’t close to being a drought. Every dry period is not a drought, but too many kids in my business have zero perspective and call everything “hot” or “drought”. Perspective is something hat is lost in the weather community. While I appreciate you reading, if you don’t like what I have to say, there are plenty of other sites available for you. Appreciate you as always, though! 🙂

I’ve got wide cracks in my yard that I’ve not seen in many years. My foundation has fallen and I have to have my piers lifted again. Only happens in long dry periods when the clay base shrinks. It may not be a technical drought by the definition but it’s a pain in the rear nonetheless.
Mark on August 22, 2019 at 4:13 pm
Chris, this is where you are somewhat wrong. I never said we were in a drought. I’ve made it a point to say “dry” not “drought.” The two are meteorologically different, but not uncommon to be mentioned together. I’ve just been saying since the beginning of July, some areas of the state, particularly north-central KY have been much drier than normal. Lots of parched lawns and even vegetation wilting in forested areas. Dogwood trees have been showing stress due to abnormal dryness the past 7 weeks. Lots of cracked ground, too. I don’t care how wet it was earlier in the year and last year, the reality is conditions have changed the past two months and should not be ignored.
There are different types of droughts, which the drought monitor points out. There are short term droughts. Long term droughts. Agricultural droughts. Hydrologic droughts. Short term droughts are under 6 months. Abnormally dry is just a way of saying rainfall has been far below normal recently, which it has been across parts of the state. Yes, it’s summer and not everyone gets rain every single episode. But dry conditions or drought are not a matter of perspective, they are a matter of fact and data. It would be great to tune into your blog once and just here you acknowledge that some areas are dry.
Anyways, you’re correct, I don’t have to read your blog, but have enjoyed it for years as you do post some educational data. Criticism isn’t a lack of respect, but more of just wanting to see all the weather phenomenon presented to the readers.

Everything Chris says is not etch in stone. I think what you said made good points. I never ever like for a man to say to me if you don’t like it you can just leave. To me that is a form of a threat. I for one never ever liked someone to speak to me that way. And a true Christian man doesn’t talk to a man that way. To me it’s a blog where you can agree or disagree. You said what you thought and he never liked it. He takes the praises but not being disagreed with.

It’s just started to rain in my part of Richmond (1925 hrs). Been going for about a minute… My wife just said, “This is the most rain we have had, in like, four weeks.”She’s probably right.
