Good Sunday to one and all. We have a very chilly brand of air going on out there today and this will set the stage for an early season frost for many by Monday morning. Some patchy frost is possible early today, but the real threat comes as we start out the new week.
There may even be some patchy frost in some of the colder valleys early this morning. Temps this morning will start out in the upper 30s and low 40s for many areas. Here’s a sample of today’s lows from the Kentucky Mesonet:
Highs today will top out in the low and mid 60s under mainly sunny skies. Tonight is when our readings will drop into the mid and upper 30s for many. I have seen similar situations in the past produce low 30 temps in our cold spots. Light frost is a good bet for a lot of the region by Monday morning.
Will the NWS offices covering central and eastern Kentucky pull the trigger on Frost Advisories? They should. Here’s the deal… this is the MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER. 36 degrees and scattered frost this time of year can do more damage than 32 degrees and widespread frost during the end of October when the growing season is already finished. You have to take a step back and look at the big picture and put things in perspective. It’s SEPTEMBER and the potential for frost is certainly more than real. If that isn’t cause enough for a Frost Advisory then the whole program needs to be overhauled.
Monday will be a breezy and cool day with highs back in the 60s. Warmer air then works back in on Tuesday as our temps warm into the 70s for highs. 70s should be common for the middle and end of next week. We will also ramp up the chances for showers and storms during this time. You can see a wet pattern trying to set up through next weekend…
Here’s something you may enjoy from fantasy land of the 16 day GFS Snowfall Forecast…
Don’t go digging out your snow boots just yet. 😉
Have a wonderful Sunday and take care.
35.6 degrees with a light frost around the rooftops and low-lying areas in my part of Lawrenceburg.
Some patchy frost here in Lexington.
We live on a hill in Bourbon County and everything below us is covered in frost.
Kind of have mixed feelings about the falling temperatures. Personally, I can take the heat better than the cold and the dreary winter overcast, but this past summer was a bit much even for me.
Nashville could drop to near 40 tonight. Interestingly, Nashville’s record early freeze (not frost) is surprisingly early, October 2 (in 1984).
The dual-pol upgrade of the radar at NWS Charleston WV starts Monday morning (Sept 24).

As of late, NWS radars have been out of service for six days or so until completion of upgrades. Thus, Charleston could be back up by the end of the month (NWS Charleston’s jurisdiction includes a few eastern Kentucky counties)
Other upgrades are just around the corner.
NWS Louisville’s upgrade starts Oct 16. Louisville was previously scheduled to start in early November.
NWS Jackson KY has been moved up to Oct 24, about a month ahead of Jackson’s original date.
hey all just checking in.
if the weather stay like this year around it be awesome.
looking like a rough winter as far as all of the indications i see.
guess that means we are due for an ice storm, eh?? Please no. If a man were smart, they’d go buy a gererator and stock up on firewood.
33 degress and frost on Boones Creek north of Athens.
