Good afternoon, folks. I wanted to drop by for a very quick update on the upcoming arctic air and the system moving in for the weekend.
Let’s start with the short term and roll forward. Some light snows continue to brush northern Kentucky today, with a shower or two elsewhere.
Temps drop this evening and there could be another little batch of some flurries or light snow trying to develop farther south. The GFS shows a few flakes into Wednesday…
This is when the arctic front arrives with gusty winds and a big drop in temperatures. The numbers by Thursday morning can drop into the single digits in the north…
Thursday’s highs should range from the upper teens to low 20s, but gusty winds make it feel much colder.
The weekend system continues to look pretty awesome from a meteorological standpoint. Friday starts with arctic air in place and the potential for some overrunning light mix late in the day.
Temps then rise Friday night into Saturday and may hit the low 60s on a gusty southwesterly wind. Showers and some rumbles of thunder will be possible.
The arctic front then moves in Saturday night and early Sunday, undercutting a pretty healthy precipitation shield. As temps drop into the teens and 20s, things could get ugly for a time. Sleet, freezing rain and some snow will all be possible. Here’s the GFS breakdown…
Very cold winds blow behind that as another shot of arctic air moves in for the start of Christmas week.
I will see you guys for another update later today. Have a good one and take care.
God knows I am not an expert but usually when a arctic front arrives to your hometown the air is so dry it does not allowed for moisture to be produced.
Of course I could be wrong.
True. There’s occasionally an exception to that but Rodger doesn’t think this will be a big winter precip maker for the area. However, when it gets that cold that fast it doesn’t take much precip to ice up the roads. This time of year, each system and cold blast makes the likelihood of the next one delivering snow for Kentucky better and better. Just hope it happens before the pattern flips to warm. The ole weather channel has most of northern half the state under a 1-3 inch snow for Sunday, rare for them to show KY this far ahead?
Suburbs of Indy really overachieved with snow today some places approaching 5 inches of the white stuff.
Anyone other than me noticing a “favorite ” zone so far this winter?? That being Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and points east. Hope that doesn’t stay that way all winter.
Thanks for the update Chris. Hoping for no ice but it could be tricky.
The AO is currently in positive territory, and the NAO is about neutral. We really need both to go negative and stay there for awhile for the cold shots to have staying power. Otherwise, the cold will come and go. Hopefully, some decent Greenland blocking will appear sometime this winter and keep the cold around here longer.
Thanks DJC, that ties in with something Chris said awhile back.
I predict some ice. Some snow. Some freezing rain. Some cold rain. Cold temps. Then it will be 60 again by midweek. And repeat.
Hit the nail on the head.
Got 4″ in East Central Indiana. Would post pic but don’t know how on here. About time I see snow!
What are you doing in Indiana..lol..you supposed to be in keavy..lol.
Looks like a wild ride. I’m just happy to see the show!
I still feel like any snow we get in December is a bonus.
notice weather channel has painted darker color of snow for northern and western,ky this weekend. Also it has dip a little further south
Snow beckons snow! A good snow pack to the north is a good thing.
The snows over achieved in Indiana so hopefully it will leave a good snow pack and move this weekend’s storm further out.
Further south not out.
Not in this case this storm this weekend storm screams WAA snowpack will not matter in this case, unfortunately.
About 5 inches here in Delaware ohio today.
18z GFS was a ugly run for the weekend storm sleet/freezing rain late Saturday night into early Sunday
That warm front comming through is feisty ky will be lucky to get more than ten minutes of sleet and freezing rain before all rain and 67 degrees.
