Good Saturday and Merry Christmas Eve. We have a pretty fun little setup for our Christmas weekend, and it’s one that can lead to a huge temperature swing for the big day. This fun look can really crank up next week as winter starts to flex a little muscle before we end the year.
Today’s rains will be heavy at times early this morning, then we see some scattered stuff taking over in the afternoon and for Christmas Eve. Temps will range from the low 40s north to the low and mid 50s in the far south an west.
Christmas Day will find warmer air fighting in from the south, but the cold in the north won’t give up without a fight. Temps for Christmas afternoon can range from the low 40s north to near 70 in the south. What??! Check this out from the NAM…
Temps on Monday surge well into the 60s for the entire state as winds become gusty from the southwest. This is ahead of a cold front that will bring a band of rain and some thunder into town later in the day into Monday night. Chillier air comes in behind that.
A stronger cold front moves in on Wednesday and could bring snow showers and flurries behind it for Thursday and Friday. Here’s the GFS…
The European for the same time…
That brings us to New Year’s Eve and Day, and another potential winter weather maker. The European Model basically brings part of the Polar Vortex into the eastern part of the country…
Watch how the coldest Anomalies in North America move right into our part of the world…
You can see how warm things get in Alaska and Greenland. That’s because of the blocking going up in those regions, forcing the cold into the country.
I will hook you up with another update or two later today.
Merry Christmas and take care.
I hope Wednesdays system and the New Year one aren’t northwest/backside systems. If they are? That’s two non events. Merry Christmas to all.
Seems most of the moisture would be out of the area before the cold air catches up. Just as long not a slower system with warm air aloft. Keep expecting the Ice word a lot more than the Snow word for a significant event this winter.
Ho ho hoooo!
Wasn’t just yesterday the GFS was showing a possible accumulating snow for next weekend??? As usual without fail the GFS no longer shows that scenario.
Winter precip maps more than 2 or 3 days out are a waste of time. Merry Christmas to all and let’s hope 2017 brings some snow! Rodger in Dodger
Thanks Chris. Merry Christmas to all my weather blog friends! Have a wonderful day and don’t forget to set out those cookies and that milk for Santa!
Thanks Chris and Merry Christmas to you and all my fellow KWC followers. Hopefully the cold air can sustain itself through January and February. These warm to cold, cold to warm patterns are never good for Kentucky snow. Unless you live on the other side of the fence of course.
Need the cold and a Low to move across the south picking up some gulf moisture and working up this side of the Apps.
Write this down…before January 7, we shall have more than 0.1″ snow…includes Louisville, Lexington, and Jackson. That’s my bold prediction….
Another 1 + here in the Harlan area and still raining…approaching 7 inches for the month total. What a turn around since the last week of November as we received only around 3 inches in a 90 day period up prior to the end of November and over 10 inches since in a 30 day period!!!
Now to complete this awesome weather turn around, we need 10 + inches of snow…
Merry Christmas to all!
Be careful what you wish for, LOL
Read ’em and weep. White Christmas rules.

ya know whats funny …a week away the maps will show snow then we end up with rain ..happens all the time ….but how often do u the maps show rain a week away and we end up with snow? I’m gonna say not very often ….Merry Christmas
Definitely weather models over 2 days old seem to change frequently. The Ohio Valley must be one the most difficult places to accurately forecast the weather in the country. Merry Christmas to all and may a big snow come your way very soon!
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
This time last year it was warmer than it is today…. but that didn’t stop the kids from having a big time opening gifts, and hasn’t put a damper on things today either. I’m thinking that about a week or so later the weather turned snowy and we went to school only a few days in the month of January. Merry Christmas to Chris, and all the bloggers, I hope your Christmas is spectacular and many memories are made!
Rain still holding on
