Good Monday, folks. A significant winter storm is impacting much of Kentucky to start the day. This is putting down a tremendous amount of heavy, wet snow into parts of the region, and is causing all kinds of travel issues. It’s a storm we have tracked for nearly a week, putting out a Winter Storm THREAT well in advance to get you ready for the impact.
Some areas will pick up 6″ to 10″ of wet snow before the storm pulls away early today, but the winter weather isn’t finished with us just yet. A few snow showers and flurries will filter back in here this evening and tonight, but a much more pronounced snow shower/squall maker moves in later tomorrow.
This system from late Tuesday into Tuesday night can put down some light accumulations…
Once we get past Wednesday, much milder air will begin to take over. That will also bring some showers and thunderstorms our way into the weekend and that may kick off another VERY active and wet period. Let’s hope the 2 week rain totals from the GFS aren’t anywhere close to verifying…
We will get into all that later today. For now, let’s track the major winter storm…

Woke up to LOTS of snow in my part of Richmond… Will measure later – going back to bed – snow day!
Guess no playing hooky from the office for me 🙁 . Nashville TN has had light to occasional moderate snow which is trying to stick to the lawns and car tops. But looks like the precip is ending soon.
Kind of crazy this heavy snow (for some of us) is happening on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Blizzard of 93.
Well another foot of rain is exactly what SE KY needs! NOT.
We can’t get an inch of snow down here but another foot rain will likely verify.
Two decades of the dome still lives in Knox County. Lol
Not exactly news worthy LoL nothing has changed.
Chris knocked it outta the park on this one.
Real news.
Geez. 6-10 inches and old NKY is once again not involved. I need to move.
I’m thrilled. Both for me who didn’t have to drive in snow this morning and for those in Kentucky who are loving seeing a snow storm.
Would hate to lose you though.
It’s a marshmallow world here on the southeast side of Lexington. I know the depth on top of deck railings aren’t a good measurement but there is well over a foot of snow on them and every surface, shrub, and tree is covered in a blanket of white. The street light across the way looks like Narnia!
Congratulations. Wish we could end the two decade drought here in Knox Co. , but it’s just not to be. Enjoy.
Went out, measured the depth of the snow as the snow is about to come to an end here in the hills in Taylor County. My snowfall total around twelve inches in my back yard. Trees are going to be beautiful at daybreak. A wonderful way to end Winter. Looking forward to a quiet, pleasant Spring and Summer. The end.
Admiral needs to shovel your walk for you then!
Come on Central Kentuckians, post your totals.. Just a couple of inches here in southeast ky..
Snow is just beautiful!!!
This is why I get excited about snow. I don’t care what time of year it snows.
Right now Richmond looks amazing.
Btw, great job Chris with the forecast.
7 3/4″ on the north side of Danville.
Looks like 5-7″ in east Lexington. Almost as bad as an ice storm. Some tree damage. Given today’s high in the 40s, it should melt quickly.
Looks like north Richmond got about 6″. Heavy snow packs in, but seems that is about right.
I would concur. 🙂
Measured 9 inches here in Jessamine and know that was after some had melted. Heavy, wet snow brought down a neighbor’s large pine tree, luckily missed the house. Wish it had been daylight so I could have seen the heavy snow as it came down.
About 8 inches in Nicholasville.
Got up the second time and went out with my winter yardstick to measure 8 to 9 inches in my part of Richmond. (I am a winter loving ever-optimist)
Beautiful at my house again this morning! Woke up to abt 3 inches of snow.
Great job with your forecast, Chris. Very happy for all who received a good dump of snow. Not surprisingly my area just East of Huntington received about an inch. But according to Chris’ maps, I never was in the heavy snow zone. On a side note, Charleston NWS waited for snow to start to begin issuing advisories.
It’s beautiful in Jenkins , in Letcher Co. it’s snowed all morning, but it’s never really went to all snow. Always a little rain mixed in and our temperature has started above freezing. Had it been all snow we would easily had several inches.
But the trees are beautiful and the roads are clear so I’m a happy camper.
Close to an inch here in knott county
Right at a foot in far eastern Powell Co. Power has been put since about 2am. Thankful it isn’t extremely cold outside today.
Charleston, WV got about 3 to 4 slushy inches with much more points east.
But the trees are beautiful and the roads are clear so I’m a happy camper.
