Good Sunday, everyone. As another day starts with temps in the single digits in Kentucky, we turn our attention toward a wintry mix moving in for Sunday night and Monday. This isn’t a big storm system, but it is likely to become a high impact travel event by tomorrow morning.
A mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain develops in the west this evening and rolls eastward tonight and Monday. Here’s my latest breakdown:
- Temps this afternoon rebound toward the freezing mark or a little above in the south and west.
- Those temps drop back to freezing or a few degrees below as precipitation moves in. That sets the stage for our wintry mix.
- With the ground frozen solid and road temps in the low 20s, anything that falls is going to create slick travel conditions by Monday morning.
- Even with temps above freezing, the frozen ground is going to make things icy. That’s especially true for untreated roads, sidewalks and parking lots.
- Pinpointing specific amounts of each precipitation type is a tough thing to do, even on a general scale. That said, here’s your latest Call For Snow/Icefall…
As always, those lines and numbers are general estimates and are never set in stone. I will put out a final call later today.
My current map lines up more with the Canadian Model than anything else…
Snow
Ice
The Hi Res NAM is very similar now with the icing…
Again, this is more of a travel impact than anything else.
We will also need to keep a close eye on Tuesday morning for the potential for some freezing drizzle developing.
From there, temps recover in a big way for the middle of the week, but come crashing down by Friday. That’s when we may go from thunderstorms to winter weather that carries us through next weekend…
We will worry about that once we get through the icy stuff coming later tonight and Monday.
I will update things again later today, so check back in. Have a great Sunday and take care.
Finally some moderation in temps and moisture to work with, of course central ky is on the battle zone again.now we’re back to typical ky winters, (right on the rain snow, freezing 32 degree lines.)Everyone be carefull out and about the next few days. …Doc
Not going to stick around long what ever you get. Rain and fog with ice and snow for a day.
Threat mode just didn’t happen…I see the 1-3″ snow line climbed way north overnight as well. If I were a betting man, next weekends system won’t be much winter precip, other than the very common backend festive flakes.
1/10th here 2/10ths there. We may just get to 3″ total snowfall by April.
My Air Force Weather Officer friend says next weekend storm could bring thunderstorms for a big part of the East and South as temperature’s will warm in front of the system moving east.
And that will be followed by a brief shot of modified Arctic air, which will be followed by another weak system from the central plains and so on so on.
It appears we are back to the normal winter here in Kentucky.
Here comes the cold rain.
The past two winters have been below normal, even for KY. Snow goes to the north and south of the state. Kentucky went from a snow dome to a snow median.
In my backyard the temps made it to 0 so we will see what the sun and wind can do.
Presently, the temperature at my back porch is fourteen degrees and the sunrise has a beautiful reddish hue to it.The old saying goes ‘ Red sky in morning sailor take warning ‘. With this new age climate we are currently in, we shall see.
For you snow lovers…im saying there will be a potential storm onnnn, oh lets say Jan 17th…lol
Oh boy 10 days can’t wait. 😉
Im finally out of this state.now I can enjoy some real winter weather. Moved to Delaware ohio about 25 minutes north of Columbus ohio.about 6 inches of snow on ground. I will still usr chris for my weather he’s by far the best.
We get snowstorms in Kentucky ! What the hell are you talking about ? Winter is not over with, we still have plenty of time to get a major snowstorm here in Kentucky. Even though I have been saying that we will not have any snowstorms this winter, I’ve have changed my mine, because the pattern is beginning to change with the Gulf of Mexico beginning to open up.
Schroeder your right winter is far from over and if the gulf of Mexico opens up we could get a major snow storm, as long as the cold air stays in place.
Not going to happen.
At least I had my fair share of snow I live just south of Erie, Pennsylvania.
Delaware, Ohio on average receives an annual snowfall of twenty two inches per year. That is just four inches more than I have in my county here in Kentucky. Back in February 2015 one storm totaled twenty eight inches in my back yard, so don’t tell me it’s not going to happen, because it will.
Got question all mets say u want southern track for a snow track got it u don’t want to strong of a low it will overwhelm the cold air got it this is supposed to be a weaker low got arctic air in place yes it is retreating but still in place but still get a cold rain looks to me like another pathetic Kentucky winter
Just one question…if everything kept “trending colder”…why did you back off on the snow line (you placed it way north, only 3 nky counties)?
To keep you interested? Lol
The weather tends to do that in Ky….here it comes, then veers, like it’s playing chicken lol
Snow median 😉
Not sure it really was more south to begin with. Cherry pick a model and of course. The average of the models though never really had the ankle biter anywhere but north.
^This^.
Not sure why everyone tends to “cherry pick” and latch on to one outlying model (showing some snow potential) when all other models show the near opposite. Sheer “hope”, when speaking of snow in KY will get you absolutely nowhere.. Why has no one learned from this yet? We should all know by now that this was never going to pan out, just like next weekend will not pan out, nor will the following weekend.
Already a 20 mph SW wind on black mtn. Temp into the 20s.. Come on in warm air! Hopefully not enough ice to knock the power out..
Not enough moisture for that. Well, that is unless a vehicle slides and hits a power pole or something…
What time is this supposed to hit tonight and in the morning?
Thanks Chris. Hoping it is not a major issue for the commute tomorrow in east TN. We are under an advisory for slight ice accumulation.
Looking towards the end of week system, unfortunately we have been preconditioned to expect the words ‘backside flurries’ at any mention of the phrase ‘gusty southwest wind’. Hoping this is not the case this round.
…one inch of snow now?
An inch seems a stretch unless way north.
Up until now this has not been much of a winter as far as the snow goes. Here were I live in Jackson Ohio we have had a total of about 6 inches since it started. The only thing that has stood out is the cold air that we’ve been having. If it keeps this up I’m ready for spring.
Where I live.
Looking forward to some warmer weather. Bring on those 60 degree days! I’m a spring lover, my friends. Can’t wait to get outside and work in my garden.
I’m near Huntington, we don’t get much snow anymore, but we’ve had a few festive flakes this year and it’s been lovely.
Stay safe and warm folks! Get out and enjoy that sunshine and warmth later this week!
Thanks for all you do Chris!
30 degrees in Burgin ( Mercer county ) right now. We just drove in from breakfast and it felt nice compared to 0.
Good point. CB never did a threat mode and only “possible”. Mighty sad even wimpy events are possibilities. Last threat mode was in 2016.
Was there even a possible threat mode last year?
Well, there were several “possible threat modes”…Does that count? 😛
Well…..temps already overachieved today hats off to the WAA.
Yeah, thinking this will be 100% rain event for most everyone. Near 40 degrees should warm up most streets to non-icy levels. Meanwhile, models for next Saturday are looking like some could get a snow thumping!
Agreed. If any wind, that might offset some of the icing on roads.
Here’s my bold prediction temperature in Louisville is 35 degrees at 1:30 I say Louisville tops out between 40-42 for a high. When precipitation moves on in temperature drops no lower than 35 degrees. Initially precipitation starts off as sleet and quickly transition’s to all rain. That will pretty much be that. Little to no ice accumulation.
