Good evening, folks. Our slow-moving band of snow continues to slowly sink toward the southeast, with individual snow band working from southwest to northeast. This action is so heavy in the west that a Winter Storm Warning has now been issued.
Here’s a look at the warning in the west…
Some areas are already pushing 6″ in the west and can easily pick up a few more inches.
Does this overachiever continue to the east?
A Winter Weather Advisory continues for the rest of state for a general 1″-3″ snowfall. Moderate to heavy bands of snow are embedded within the overall snow shield, and will likely lead to some areas of 4″+ showing up through Tuesday.
One area to watch for an extension to the overachiever is from the Lexington bluegrass region, southwest toward the Bowling Green region. Another area will be in the southeastern mountains, but that doesn’t happen until Tuesday. Again, southeastern Kentucky won’t get much until Tuesday into Tuesday evening.
Roads will become snow covered, especially as temps plummet behind the arctic front. Single digit temps show up for some by early Tuesday, with falling temps for most throughout the day.
We could sneak below zero by Wednesday morning.
Let’s get you back to the tracking toys…

Any of the models been showing a crushing snowstorm across west ky? If not, that’s two storms in a row they were useless..
Several models were showing 5-7″ bands of snow in West Kentucky with this event using the Kuchera ratio. They were showing bands of 5-6″ snows with the 10:1 ratio when I looked yesterday and this morning. Not sure why CB didn’t mention it and acted like 4″ was the max that could be produced with this storm. You are wrong about the last storm. Most of the models were showing huge snow total potential over Western Kentucky with the last storm on Friday/Saturday. Several models were showing 6 to 12″ potential the day before that storm began. Models are far from useless!!
I was referring to the numerous runs that spit out 6-10 totals across central ky and ended up with an inch or two..
I got excited then the last frame of the radar cut a huge dry slot in the snow shield. Hope it was a radar glitch.
I noticed that, too, and thought ‘Welp! There’s the dreaded donut hole over Nelson Co.,as per usual!” ‘Twas the radar;looks like it’s filling back in.
It was a glitch
Nope. Realz.
Nope it was clearly a glitch around the 8:30-9:00 time frame on the Accuweather radar.
Thatβs one big glitch right now over the area. Somebody might want to fix it, stat! π
Actually yes, a glitch, but because I’m in Bardstown, I can never tell the difference! π
Looks like the radar returns are breaking up in northern Kentucky. Guess that means that by the time it arrives in the Huntington/Ashland area it will be like last Friday, less than an inch.
Amen
It is going to be hard to crack the dome over the tri-state area.
It can’t be done the dome will not be penetrated! If it snows at all in Ashland I’ll run around the house naked and holler it’s the end of the world!!!
I totally understand.
It has been snowing for hours in Owensboro! The snow is so deep, it’s beautiful!!
Happy digging! π Trouble free snow removal for Madison County. Little to no snow!
I live in not to far Paducah about 60 north of it by the river this cold front has stall on top of my neck of woods with a all of sudden winter storm warning has posted. Any ways a good 4+5 inches so far has fallen.
Anyone notice something?? Cold air already in place = “overachiever.” Cold air not in place = “underachiever.” This is pretty much how it goes in the OH Valley / Kentucky area. The “storm” last weekend “underachieved” in places where deep cold air wasn’t already present. If the cold air isn’t already in place, it rushes in with enough force to create the dry slot. If the cold air is already there, we get good accums.
Would you look at that radar. With what Paducah and now Hopkinsville are getting, chance it holds together for the rest of the KY/TN state line? I’m starting to get excited!
Looking at that familiar dome over Lexington for quite a while now,Seems to be more the rule rather to the exception lately. Could it be related to it’s topography being 1000ft above sea level while other central ky locations ( excluding due south) are typically 800 ft above sea level or less?
I doubt that small of an elevation could cause a problem. Here on the Highland Rim just west of the Cumberland Plateau, I know for a fact that you can go from 700ft above sea level to almost 1000ft above in just a mile or two and then back down. This happens over and over again until you rise up into appalacia. 200ft difference just isn’t enough, I don’t think. Probably has more to do with distance from the moisture source.
Anyone doubts the awesome power of the Dome, look at what happens to frozen precip when nearing Richmond Lexington area.
The radar above ain’t no glitch.
Looks like it filled back in.
Not Richmond.
This clipper that were experiencing here in Western,ky is a rarity it has dump 4-5 inches here in Union. Co. The front has just stall on top of as of now 9’00 Central Time it’s still coming down hard
I’m no weather expert but it appears it’s breaking up as it hits the Huntington/Ashland area and will be a miss. Is that right?
Seems like when it nears central KY, it deflects off our area and then misses yours as well. Third event to do that of our meager chances this winter.
The redevelopment of moderate-heavy snow over western Kentucky is really something to behold. Eight inches since Friday IMBY near Henderson but some places in far western KY will end up with 12+ inches total from both events. Rodger in Dodger
It’s not just Western KY, it’s a Regional thing! Just not our part of the region π π
NWS is trying to keep up. Posting a WSW just recently for areas that are currently getting hammered. That extends down across western TN now. I bet there will be more places to the east that gets upgraded before it’s over with. What a clipper!!!!!!! Can’t believe I’m saying that.
At least they donβt have to worry about Madison County π
It’s funny. Almost like sometimes the NWS can’t see past the local radar. Look at that moisture trail back to TX! I’ve never seen a clipper accumulate that much moisture, but I read something a few hours ago about an upper level system tapping into it. I wonder as well if the warm-up today didn’t allow for some good cloud formation.
its not a clipper per say, its a aetic front with ripples of low pressures. also there moisture tap into from the storm back into texas. I don’t think the SE/EAST peeps will see as much Snow as the west has saw IMO. we might I just don’t think the moisture stream stays as strong thru tomm.
yeah, it’s being fed by an upper level low. That’s why the WSW was put out first for northwestern Mississippi and areas south. Can’t believe how it’s over performed though since it hit western Kentucky. Can’t wait to see what it does over night.
Nice band has set over Eastwood tonight near Jeff/Shelby co. line…3 inches of new snowfall today, and still coming down.
We received an additional 8″ here in Paducah.
The Central KY dry slot w be tough to overcome!
2.5″ About 4 miles W/NW of BG. coming down very hard.
the moisture stream been nice coming up from the texas storm, now that said don’t hope for the same results SE/EAST KY. IMO I dnt see the snow getting the same feed as they got out there. now 1-3 inches the original call I think more of realistic call with VA Border counties MAYBE localized MORE. maybe.
3.5″ just measured here at 12:40 AM CST
painfully slow movement
