Good evening, folks. Our busy winter weather pattern rolls on with a light snow maker moving in tonight, and a messy mix on the way for Tuesday night into early Wednesday.
Light accumulations are possible tonight, with some coatings to 1″ a possibility. That’s especially true across the northern half of the state. Watch for slick roads to develop in some areas. I will have your tracking tools in a moment.
The Tuesday night and Wednesday setup continues to look very messy, with heavy rain, freezing rain and some snow showing up across Kentucky.
The Hi Res NAM has beefed up the overall coverage of the Freezing rain…
The GFS continues to sink southward with the band of freezing rain, and has half inch and greater amounts…
That same model also shows a better chance for accumulating snows in the north…
That can get very messy for parts of the state. In addition to the winter weather, rainfall totals of 1″-2″ are possible in the south and southeast.
I leave you with the tools to track the light snow maker rolling our way tonight…

Have a great evening and take care.
If the models continue to show that volume of ice overnight, Rodger would expect some Winter Storm Watches by morning.
A day away and no threat mode. Seems odd. Staying it seems on target for mainly north of I64- if pans out.
Maybe the impact of the last big one around these parts is enough to scare if you throw out “ice threat” and so mets are wanting to be cautious.
It would take exceedingly high levels of confidence on precip amts and type for that to happen. Which, there isn’t.
I’m positive the mets were not calling for a devastating ice storm in Lexington when it happened, either. What the actual forecast was, is the important thing to remember.
Actually… some of us were calling for that.
Yes. Actually we headed your very warnings Chris. My husband stayed home from work. And low and behold just hours into the freezing rain, our power went out. Saved this momma who was pregnant at the time a lot of stress.
Yep, CB was hollering ice for it.
Ok. I wasn’t trying to imply anything…it has been a long time and I didn’t live in Lex nor remembered the forecast for that particular day. Glad to see it was forecasted by some.
Freezing Rain Advisory is the most likely depending on P-Type.
Coverage may not be high enough to warrant an ISW.
Chris also said he doesn’t expect this to be one of those situations we already had before…
Being so close to the border this has bust potential written all over it. But bad bust if the wrong way. Tricky…
Freezing Rain Advisory is no longer a NWS product as of Oct 2017. It gets lumped in with Winter Weather Advisory. However, Ice Storm Warning products still exist.
Thank you for the correction. Now I know why it wasn’t issued earlier this week!
Does this ice have a greater tendency to move south or north than what it is now?
The WRF-NMM has an interesting take on the storm. Thoughts? blob:http://www.tropicaltidbits.com/f29fff8f-1e39-4f8b-8d49-53aecfd60cd2
Oops. Broken link. Here’s a better one. http://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=wrf-nmm®ion=ncus&pkg=ref_frzn&runtime=2018020512&fh=44
It is drunk.
You say drunk, I say “too far south.”
I hope it stays all rain.
24-36 hours away and we are still struggling to figure out what will happen. I hate the forecasting of winter storms here! Thinking that maybe I should move further north!
Thanks Chris. While I wish ice on NOONE, I don’t look forward to a day of heavy, cold rain either. But looks like that is what we get in south central Ky. My daughter in Strongsville, OH got about 5-6 inches last night, with snow predicted every day this week. I told her to get a big snowblower and blow it down to us snow starved people in Kentucky! ( she is not a snow lover at all.) Have a good evening everyone. Chris we will be in Lexington in the AM. Are we gonna be in trouble?
I said it the other day and I’ll say it again… I don’t know what we need, but we need something big (preferably a good thumping snow storm) to shut down the state for a good solid week so everyone is forced to stay at home and stop spreading their flu germs! Had 50% attendance in my room today and kids were rolling out of the building left and right with flu-like symptoms. We need a break. So bring on some dang snow!
Amen! I’m a teacher in Louisville. Flu is really bad right now.
What county with flu?
I’m in Jefferson – we’ve had flu, strep, and a virus that mimics the flu :X
I’m a teacher in Louisville also. That ‘almost like the flu’ virus has really spread at our school, along with the flu. We had a student with one kind of flu, test positive for another. A few days away would help everyone, but I am not up for an ice storm!
Did the NAM go way north
It looks about the same to me.

Hopefully this works. Last 4 runs of NAM. Looks heavier and 30 north
CB just said some ice, but mainly rain. Especially south of I64, based on his map. Main them is a bunch of cold rain, but on the few degree fringe of frozen stuff. Seems CB is thinking mainly above freezing, else a threat mode would be called.

Chris needs to find a phone booth, put on his meteorologist cape, grab that system by the tail and pull it south. I’m dying down here!! Gotta get my snow fix on!
This would be ice more than snow. This appears similar to the system nine years ago, but thankfully less cold air to support it.
After this system does it seem that winter may be winding down? Temps seems to be up for the next week. Any sign of another winter event?
Based on last two winters, I would place my bets on it winding down, but you never know until done.
Temps up next and down for rest of the month into March. This will not be our last winter event. Still thinking worst of winter may be yet to come.
