Good Friday to one and all and welcome to the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend! This is the unofficial start to Summer and the weather over the past few days has certainly made it feel rather July like. Scattered thunderstorms have been on the prowl and it is looking more and more likely that the weekend will have a few boomers lurking to try to spoil some of the outdoor activities.
Speaking of thunderstorms… radar should be lighting up this afternoon and evening as storms begin to pop across much of the area. Not every area will get in on the storms… but the areas that do will see heavy rains and the chance for a severe storm. Here is your radar…
Outside of any shower or storm action today… temps can warm well into the 80s. High humidity levels will be with us yet again. This same warm and muggy pattern will hold tough through the weekend. Moisture will continue to stream northward out of the Gulf of Mexico in the coming days and this will lead to the chance for scattered storms. Saturday’s action should still be more concentrated across our southern counties… but the the “chance of storms” line continues to nudge a little farther north with each model run. The GFS is most bullish on the Saturday stuff…
Saturday Evening
The moisture plume out of the Gulf will strengthen futher by later Sunday into Memorial Day Monday. This will interact with a front dropping toward us from the northwest leading to better coverage on the showers and storms…
Sunday Evening
Monday Evening
I want to stress the weekend is NOT going to be a total washout!! But… the chance for afternoon and evening storms will be with us each day with the highest risk coming Monday. Locally heavy rains and a strong storm or two will be possible with this setup. That same setup will likely hang around into the middle of next week.
Once again… the first half of June is looking to be on the stormy side around here. Well… at least to this weather dude.
I will have updates through the weekend as the blog doesn’t even rest for some dogs on the grill! Have a great Friday and take care.
Question for any HVAC experts out there. If you have a heat pump (air conditioning) set on 72. It maintains the temp of 72 but around 430 to 7pm (the hottest parts of the day)upper 80s to around 90 outside, the temp inside goes up to about 75 degrees. Is that normal? The air coming out of the vents is cool like air conditioning should be.
I have a heat pump and have never had that problem. Have you changed your filters recently?
In addition to the above, if this is a new occurrence I would suspect a refrigerant leak.
i would agree with that mine is struggling as well
I don’t know about KY utilities, which I assume is your power provider, but BG Energy has some sort of program that they can switch your water heater on and off during peak demand and also adjust your “efficency” of your heat pump (translation”: starve it from the power it needs). This is an optional program to participate in and you usually have a credit on your electric bill. Maybe you are enrolled in the program? Just something owrth checking into if you do not have a refrigerant leak…
Check the temperature of the air coming out of the vents if you can. It should be about 7 degrees cooler than what you have it set to maintain. Change your air filters if you haven’t lately and then check again. Then have someone check the refrigerant.
Thanks, Chris, for the update. My computer at home is on the fritz, so I can only communicate while at work…
We got a t-shower yesterday evening that was one of those that moved from northeast to southwest. Had a double rainbow, though, so its all good!
Everyone have a SAFE and Happy Memorial Day, and please remember what we are celebrating. Take a moment to say thanks to a veteran, and to remember those who have gone before.
Lightening is really bad here at work (Bowman Mill Rd area). We just lost two tv’s, one was smoking before we could get it to the door to throw it out.
Seems to have calmed down just a bit now though..let’s hope.
I am really surprised this storm is this bad. There was hail falling with the rain here in Burgin.
Just had a doozie in downtown Lex. It POURED for about40 minutes. I had just parked on Upper and could not get out of the car due to the wild lightning. Had to wait it out. Saw lightning strike the cupola on top of the old courthouse.

Severe T-storm Watch now out for SE Kentucky.
My heat pump struggles like this too. I think the heat of the day is just putting heat inside the house at a faster rate than the heat pump can draw it out, and therefore it’s normal. What it really means is that your system is underpowered for your size of house, or your insulation is too thin in the walls/attic. I try to keep the shades closed during the peak heat of the day too.
Judging by what I see on the visible and water vapor sat. channels, I would imagine that t-storms will be blowing up again within the next few hours around the Frankfort/Louisville/Lexington areas. Hmm…
thanks Shane
