Good Saturday night/Sunday everyone. Hurricane Irene continues to slam the east coast of the United States and has a date with New York City. We will continue to run in “Irene Tracking” mode until this storm makes the final landfall later today. That is when things will get back to normal around here and I expect to have a week ahead post on this afternoon or evening.
Until then… we have you set up with more radars and cams to follow the path of Hurricane Irene…![]()

Is it still a hurricane or is it a tropical storm now?
Cat 1. I’ve got excellent video from the Outer Harbor, Baltimore, MD that I took about an hour ago! We have HEAVY rain, sideways, with 40 mph sustained winds… Higher gusts every few minutes. We are expecting flooding tomorrow morning in Fells Point with high tide… We still have power but many do not. Be safe!
Remember you can check out the new weather channel at http://www.facebook.com/weathernation for some of the latest on Hurricane Irene.
Thanks Chris. These folks got lucky the storm didn’t strengthen as expected before landfall.
What a non event how about we say goodnight Irene and get back to our weather. The
10.5 catastrophe of last week has been long forgotten thanks to this Cat 5 blow to the East coast. I’ve never witnessed such hype and shameless broadcasting by cable networks.
Amazing. Give us some local weather and long ra-
5 million without power is a big news event. 10+ fatalities is a big news event.
A big “local” news event.
I agree. They should rename this storm from Hurricane Irene to Hurricane Hype.
10 fatalities? How many fatalities occur from South Carolina to Maine on a normal sunny 80 degree weekend?
Sensationalist journalism, in the name of ratings, is more dangerous than any storm. They are crying wolf. When the real dangerous one comes, nobody will believe it and nobody will leave.
“Local” as in the entire east coast?
No. Local, as in individual news markets in cities along the east coast. I agree that when it was still a hurricane then the it was a national thing, but it really was non-event to what it was hyped to be for most areas. Had th Northeast not had so much rain as of late, then there wouldn’t be a lot to talk about.
Finally back in Quantico, VA. Lost power in Baltimore last night. Lots of trees down and damage to property. There were a couple of boats sunk in the harbor, but all-in-all what you would expect from a Cat One. This area is still without power but they say it will be back up within the next several hours.
Don’t doubt the impact of Irene nationally. Simple economics point to a surge in gas prices and millions of dollars in emergency Federal aid. The human toll across State lines has been moderate as well. Irene will be felt at a national level in your wallet.
