Good Wednesday everyone. I am trying to get a post on here quickly in case my electric goes off. That has already happened to thousands and thousands of Kentuckians as our major ice storm continues overnight. This has been something to behold as many communities have been basically shut down because of the extensive ice.

That freezing rain will continue in many areas overnight and this will lead to more downed trees and power lines meaning thousands more will be in the dark. The amount of precip moving across the region has been incredible to say the least. Check out the latest radar…

The 32 degree line has had one heck of a time getting north of Interstate 64.  Low pressure was entering extreme southeastern Kentucky as of this midnight writing and this was leading to an incredible 30 degree temp gradient over a 50 mile area. Some areas were spiking all the way into the 60s!! Wow! That warm spike will be short lived as cold air swings back in early Wednesday. You can track the temps here…

If you are interested… I am sitting at 29 degrees with heavy freezing rain as I type. This is falling on top of 5″-6″ of snow that I got Tuesday morning and the scene is as pretty as I have ever witnessed. The amount of ice on top of this snow is giving it a surreal look that words cannot describe. Unfortunately… that same pretty looking ice will likely cause the power to go down at some point later tonight.

No matter what happens tonight… temps will crash from west to east early Wednesday with ice and rain changing quickly to snow and this snow should come down heavily in many areas. Here is the latest snowfall forecasts from the models…

Here is a map I made for you with my snowfall thoughts…

There could be localized higher amounts as I expect to see some very heavy snow bands setting up for a time mid to late Wednesday morning. Temps will fall into the 20s during the afternoon hours.

Beyond that… we have a good shot at putting down an inch or two of snow again Friday as a system dives in from the northwest and this can deliver some very cold temps for Friday into Saturday.

The models are starting to really pick up on a storm developing in the Gulf Sunday then riding north into the Carolinas Monday and this one will need to be watched closely.

So again… a major ice storm will continue in many areas overnight before changing to snow from west to east Wednesday morning with accumulations likely. Widespread power outages will be common into Wednesday and the snowfall may add to that simply because it will be putting more weight on trees and power lines.

I will issue updates as needed… but keep in mind that your friendly weather dude may lose power. Please keep posting the weather where you live… you guys are great!

On a side note… we could still see some high water problems in the southeast overnight. I don’t want that to go unmentioned.

Stay safe and take care.
